@davidmonfore2730 i still have it...... I may be putting it up for sale soon. I just got it repainted and new headlights. looks brand new. I also have a honda element. I need to down size my fleet lol
Awesome car and review! A party trick you missed is that you can remove the front seat headrests, push the seats completely forward, then recline them back completely flat. By lying the front passenger seat flat I was able to carry a complete prehung standard interior door in the xB. Amazing! The unusually tall trunk is a game changer. It is also remiss to not mention how it compared to the Gen 2 xB.
We just got one of these. It's a great little car. It's even equipped with airbags because the original owner towed stuff with it. We are very happy with it.
I had a 2004, and I loved it! In 2007, I noticed that the new xb looked 'different', so I ran out and tried a used 2004. It was fun to drive, so I got it. it was very reliable. One great thing about it was the head room - you could practically wear a top hat. To me, it was the perfect little box.
"A lot of people have this as their first car" lol, it is my first car. It was a gift from dad. I really like it, I've been using it for like two months. Unfortunately because the previous owner didn't treat it very well it has lots of dents and weird stratches. Like if he had many accidents. And the windows don't work. But other than that, it works good. I really liked your video, very informative and entertaining.
I have a 2005 manual. I bought it new for $14k, and in 20 years the only repairs were a front bearing in 2010 and an ac compressor a few months ago. I love my toaster, I'm gonna cry when it dies. I wish someone else made box cars with a stick shift.
Cool video. I think you may have missed out on some of the practical positives. You mentioned the price and the space, but you didn’t mention that it was one of the least expensive new cars you could buy at the time. That combined with Toyota reliability was a huge value. A legitimate alternative to a pre-owned car. Also, even if you were 6’5”, you could fit comfortably in an xB compared to most other economy cars. The headroom was unbeatable, along with the view outside. No obstructions. The short wheelbase actually gave it a tight turning circle and helped with handling. And the acceleration wasn’t bad if you compared it to other economy cars from 20 plus years ago. I had a 2006 manual xB, the best way to get the most out of the 1.5 liter DOHC engine. It was a very practical, fun(really), quirky cute car. Toyota could’ve improved it with a 6th gear and a few extra cubic inches(centimeters), for the next generation. Instead they lost 6 inches of headroom and it gained 600 pounds with a Camry drivetrain. It was ruined in my opinion. A few improvements would’ve made it an amazing city car. Toyota guessed wrong that the TC would be its best seller and as a result they had things like an optional supercharger available on that, but very little on the xB. It’s too bad. Scion would’ve eventually taken off when average car prices went way over $40K, in my opinion. By the way, my ‘06 did have buttons on the steering wheel. And they actually worked with my aftermarket upgraded audio system.
Great , enthusiastic review. Thank YOU…I have the 2005 Scion xB Release Series 2.0 Solar Yellow 5 sp. As you stated the xB only came in one trim level with many dealer installed choices / options available. The base price included the base watt Pioneer stereo with CD & 6 speakers also dealer installed, because customer could also choose to upgrade to others including the JBL. I added the cruise control, strut brace, center armrest, fog lights, block heater later… same ones that dealer used. Also added roof rack and trailer hitch which I use often. It is my understanding that the rear floor is raised because the Japanese BB did not come with a spare and had a flat floor; Toyota had to raise to accommodate the spare. BTW the jack is stored under the driver’s seat… took awhile to find. The 5 sp. manual is lowered geared and noisier at highway cruising… 3500 rpm at 60 as stated by earlier comment.
I like your review of the toaster! I have a 2006 xb, with 230k. These cars last long, even with basic maintenance. Very dependable. Wish Toyota would bring 1st gens back exactly how they made them.
A restaurant near me had an xB delivery car for years and it always gave me a good laugh. Not too long ago they replaced it with a Scion iQ, arguably an even funnier car 😂
Excellent review. You remind me of Doug but without having to spend 30 years going over Every single button, light sound or mirror. You also have a good voice for it. I have owned both generations of toyota bb (aka daihatsu materia) and they are my favorite daily cars.
It is NOT an exciting or luxurious drive. But for what it is, with its wheels pretty much at the extreme 4 corners of the vehicle, it holds the road surprisingly well. Mine has 213K on the odometer. On my very short local commute, it gets 24 MPG. On a highway trip, it'll get 35 MPG. I've driven mostly Toyotas for close to 40 years, so the reliability and endurance don't surprise me at all. And I have to say, especially when it's freshly washed, as walked toward in a parking lot, the styling gives me a chuckle. All those right angles. Very easy to spot in a crowd.
I have a 2012 9.0 RS Scion xB. Room and style. The oil consumption issue was fixed by Toyota, if not one could do a Berryman's treatment. I can still chrip the tires on takeoff if i want - the second Gen xB can get out of its own way. 16.4 in the quarter is slow but snappy because it only weighs 3089 pounds.
While I absolutely loved my XB it is equivalent to carrying a sheet of plywood on a windy day, especially when driving it on the highway with a crosswind 😂
i've had 3 of these, i still got mine, and will buy another. i drive my chrysler 300 to keep miles off of the xb. i want to keep it. yours seemed a bit slow. does it have the original cat?
Japan is kinda wack with their options. The current Yaris is available with mechanical AWD there! I've not seen that anywhere else in the world. They also have a 6-speed manual option but that sadly can't be had with AWD, only the CVT can. The M15A-FKS 1.5L inline-3 is probably the spiritual successor to the 1NZ-FE. It makes a respectable 123 hp.😤
I bought a Scion to heat myself out of trouble with tickets to get lower insurance rates and primarily to save gas the same 6 ft tall so some cars didn't feel quite right. This was easy to sit in. The downside is for me the gas mileage sucked so bad. I couldn't get more than 22 miles per gallon + that's with extreme hypermyline + 36 lb in the tires etc. It was reliable but something was obviously wrong because it got terrible mileage compared to everyone else that I knew that had one
I know it’s not an expensive vehicle but getting rid of it is #2 or #3 in my car related mistakes 😢…#1 is selling my ‘91 MR2 Turbo for a ‘03 350Z when it first came back out 😵💫😮💨
I own this exact car and color😂. It's a tank. The engine is a 1NZ-FE, the yaris motor, that is basically unkillable. Timing CHAIN. only thing i dont like is the road noise on highways... Also i have the 5spd standard as the automatic has weak acceleration..
I like a man who never looks in a mirror…it shows confidence! Love your reviews…had a Tercel wagon which reminds me of this. Lots of fun in the snow with skinny tires and a 5 speed.
Or people who don't want to buy overpriced garbage from Stellantis? I love my Xb. I bought it in 09 and still have it running today😂. It allowed me to buy a Lexus.. don't hate the toaster!!
Toyota needs something like this today, a very affordable and practical car.
It'd be great!
The corolla hatchback is pretty cool.....not quite like this though.....I still have my 06 scion xb release series 3.0...envy green 💚
NO DOUBT!
@@johnathoncastro the rs 3.0 is my all time fav xB rs
@davidmonfore2730 i still have it...... I may be putting it up for sale soon. I just got it repainted and new headlights. looks brand new. I also have a honda element. I need to down size my fleet lol
The xB was ahead of it's time. I Miss mine, it was so roomy!
Space age box!
Awesome car and review! A party trick you missed is that you can remove the front seat headrests, push the seats completely forward, then recline them back completely flat. Thank you!! Ohh yes good to know! That's rad haha.
Is the seat able to go back any further than it is ? I’m 5”9 and I still need more leg room
I left my headrest on and reclined about 45° in order to fit ladders inside the headrest kept the ladder from moving around 😂.
We just got one of these. It's a great little car. It's even equipped with airbags because the original owner towed stuff with it. We are very happy with it.
Oh sweet!! Good find!
Yesss more old cars, Bern! We grew up with these and I love deep dives into them
Yess they definitely wont stop!!
This will be my first car very soon. can’t wait!!
Ahhh excellent that's exciting!!

Man that gauge cluster is unexpectedly super cool!
Yeah right pretty funky!!
I have a 2005 manual. I bought it new for $14k, and in 20 years the only repairs were a front bearing in 2010 and an ac compressor a few months ago. I love my toaster, I'm gonna cry when it dies. I wish someone else made box cars with a stick shift.

Cool video.

Thank you for tuning in!! Oh nice you have a sweet spec yourself!!
It’s been a little while since I have watched a video but your production quality seems to have gone up, great job and nice review!
Yeah dude Im glad you noticed! Thank you sir!

That's awesome LOL and they like their Scions
They needed something EVEN MORE *economical*
I own one slammed to the ground with 284k miles🤣 I drive it low every single day with no issues, one of the best cars I’ve ever owned
Damnn nice 😂😂😂
It got that 1NZ-FE in it, the Yaris motor you can't kill baby
Unkillable!!
Same here. Got the 2006 Xb and that engine is unkillable. Never leaked a drip of oil either and it has high miles.
Excellent review. You remind me of Doug but without having to spend 30 years going over Every single button, light sound or mirror. You also have a good voice for it. I have owned both generations of toyota bb (aka daihatsu materia) and they are my favorite daily cars.

Hello. @2:55 This is my daily 2005 RS2 manual. Over 230K. Pretty reliable. Still going strong.
Oh wow that's awesome! I love seeing your car out and about! I'll say hello next time haha
Nissan had the Cube at the time, but it wasn't sold in North America until about 2009. It also wasn't as boxy as the XB though.
Yeah and the 2nd Gen xB wasn't as boxy as the original either!
The cube looked like an XB with down syndrome .
Oh wow nice! That's good they fixed it. Haha yeah I hope you continue enjoying it!!
Another masterpiece Bern. Love your reviews.
I appreciate that! Thanks for staying tuned!
Yes go for the hot lava orange or Solar yellow those are release series!🤩 great video dude!
Lets goo! Thank you!!
hell yeah my dude I love my Scion, I call it "The Bento Box"
That's an awesome name I love it!! 🤣
While I absolutely loved my XB it is equivalent to carrying a sheet of plywood on a windy day, especially when driving it on the highway with a crosswind 😂
That's funny 🤣
Great review! Keep them coming!
Thank you sir!!
Great review! Thank you. My SIL has a yellow one.
Thank you! Oh nice love them in yellow!
Oh hey, that's one of my family members' cars! I've even driven it myself, fun stuff! 2:55
Oh wow!!!
Excellent review
Thank you!
05 owner with 17 inch rims, highly recommend switching out the wheels if you end up with one of these 15 inch tires are just hard to come by nowadays
Nice yeah I'm sure they handle better on 17's too!
can't wait to join the xb cult lol love this vid >>>>
Lets gooo exciting!!
LOVE the Scion I have a 2006!
Nice!!!
i've had 3 of these, i still got mine, and will buy another. i drive my chrysler 300 to keep miles off of the xb. i want to keep it.
yours seemed a bit slow. does it have the original cat?
That's great! Haha toaster hoarder!
I'm not sure! I'm pretty sure it was the original!

Yeah right!! It's a shame we don't get the really nice stuff!
Thank you for this . I have no manual
Yeah of course! Thanks for watching!
Yeah interesting, I'd expect more too! That's a bummer
The way you said economical made me laugh. i always wanted one, but i think I'll keep my 4runners
LOLL, yeahh 4Runner for me too
2:07 What you see here is a bunch of broke people because their trucks get 13 MPG at best and an absolute real one in their Scion xB.
My wife loves her 04 XB! It should be a crime to get the auto, the 5-speed makes the car.
Sweeet! Yeah 5 speed is the way to go!
I know it’s not an expensive vehicle but getting rid of it is #2 or #3 in my car related mistakes 😢…#1 is selling my ‘91 MR2 Turbo for a ‘03 350Z when it first came back out 😵💫😮💨
Damnnn there's always the ones that get away 😭
I love my solar yellow
Very nice!!
I own this exact car and color😂. It's a tank. The engine is a 1NZ-FE, the yaris motor, that is basically unkillable. Timing CHAIN. only thing i dont like is the road noise on highways...
Also i have the 5spd standard as the automatic has weak acceleration..
Haha nice 😆😆 yeah they're little troopers!! Haha
Thanks for stopping by!
So it looks like the 2004 I picked up two weeks ago has no alarm? I only have a mechanical key, no fob
Interesting! You can probably get one from eBay
Mine doesn’t have the beep? Just purchased a 2004. Is this beep from an alarm?
It's when you have the key in the ignition with the door open!
The manual transmission was much peppier, I had the manual and my friend had the automatic back in the day.
That's cool good to know!
Scion XB has always looked like a mini-hearse ... Dead to rights ...
LOL mini hearse 🤣
Btw 60mph in the manuals is like 3500rpm
This is basically a Kei car with a larger engine. We should have a lot more options like this instead of being forced into bloated inefficient SUVs.
Right, it'd be a much happier society
What’s that toast plushie from? I want it lol
I'll have to ask Karna haha
Ive got an 05 honda element and an 06 scion xb release series 3.0.....i like the scion better!!!!
Oh wow haha battle of the toasters!!
1NZ-FE would be half of a 3MZ-FE?
LOL in a way yes!
Hey Bern 👋
Hey!
Tremendous cars
Indeed!!
No usb?
Unfortunately no!
I like how your socks match the car…now about your taste in shorts…ahem.
Whats wrong with them? LOL
I like a man who never looks in a mirror…it shows confidence! Love your reviews…had a Tercel wagon which reminds me of this. Lots of fun in the snow with skinny tires and a 5 speed.
Hahah love it
“For the young people “
“Economical” 😆
😆😆
Also...the bB has a different trunk door handle...it doesnt look as appealing as the xB's. Real talk!
Good note!! I agree!
The Toyotas designed for people on their last legs. If they drove any faster, their buyer's skin would tear off
LOL that is acurate 😂
Or people who don't want to buy overpriced garbage from Stellantis? I love my Xb. I bought it in 09 and still have it running today😂. It allowed me to buy a Lexus.. don't hate the toaster!!
Can i buy the scion from you ? Being dead serious
Karna isn't selling it sadly! 😭
@franzj
