    There are several pine trees in our backyard and I recently saw a red-cockaded woodpecker on one of the pine trees. It was amazing to see.

    You're so lucky to have a birding girlfriend! I would love to find someone, let alone someone to do such a beautiful thing with. If you come to the Carolina Sandhills, you won't get enough red-cockaded woodpeckers, or any woodpeckers for that matter! Just in the parking lot of Weymouth Woods I found like 3 different woodpecker species!

    Thanks for including the other creatures in your adventure. I was hoping you would mention the narrow-mouthed toads! I recognized them right away. SO loud and like a sheep bleeting!
    Also, I think it’s worth noting that Longleaf Pine habitat maintenance is largely dependent on humans due to the need for prescribed fire to keep the understory open and help the young regenerate successfully.

    • @BadgerlandBirding
      @BadgerlandBirding  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Narrow-mouthed Toads are awesome! Totally agree on the sheep comparison. And that's true about the pines. Keeping that understory clear is really important for the woodpeckers.

    I live in Picayune about 30 min from slidell where this wildlife refuge is located and i have red cockaded woodpeckers around my property. I have large old growth slash and loblolly pine and some longleaf too. One ofthe neighboring properties around mine has an open pine grove with grassy herbaceous layer and few hardwoods and i hear their squeaky calls in this stand every day. Its their cluster site and they sometimes forage around my property. I live near the crosby arboretum in pucayune

    Thanks for showing the red-cockaded woodpeckers! I like them and it’s too bad that they are harder to these days due to the decline of the long-leaf pine forest habitat. I am glad that you all stayed safe and didn’t try to cross the flooded roads.

    Brilliant as always....
    Btw i want to make a request, im not from the united states so it would be wonderful if you could do a program about the best birding sites a tourist coming to the US should go... to bag the most number of species, it would serve as an amazing guide to foreign birders dying to come on a birding trip to the US.
    Cheers

      I recommend southern Arizona for some pretty great birding. The chiricahua mountains are a great place to check. I saw an American Dipper last time I was there. A lot of stuff also visits from Mexico in that region.

    We had a downy woodpecker feeding ferociously at our feeder, we live near a spring, in a suburb- and a red bellied pair, now with off spring come every day- but I don’t see the downy anymore. Do you know if they migrate? We live in suburb of Dallas. Thanks, this was so beautiful to see!!

    • @BadgerlandBirding
      @BadgerlandBirding  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They don't really migrate but they seem to show up more when food is scarce in the winter so the Downy could just be off doing it's own thing

      Haha, thanks! Juan Pablo is most-likely a Downy or Hairy Woodpecker. Red-cockaded Woodpeckers would have a big white cheek patch like the ones in this video. Here is some more info on the Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers. th-cam.com/video/nOu9dYxtrpI/w-d-xo.html
