Suzuki GSX-8R 1000 mile review & SW-Motech Luggage

- Having clocked up over a 1000 miles on the Suzuki GSX 8R I thought I ought to do an update. As you may recall, whilst it is an excellent sports bike my intention was to use it as a more all rounder and turn it in to a bit of a sports tourer. Some people doubted I would be able to get panniers and even more doubted the ability to put a rack on. I must admit looking at the backend of the bike it seems impossible but those clever people at @SW-MOTECH came up with a great rack and top case that I think really suits the bike. They also came up with a pannier rail that is removed with just a push, leaving the bike looking just as clean as it was before fitting. All that’s needed now is a roll-top bag, tank bag and satnav, and the transformation to a sports tourer is complete.
What has impressed me the most is the luggage system has given me the ability to have the best of both worlds, a sports bike that becomes a sports tourer in under a minute.

Such a nice bit of kit sorted for weekend jollies 👍
Absolutely 😁 thanks Mark 😁
So glad to be home from the hospital, TAYM! I still like my Aprilia Tuono 660!
Great to hear 😁 thanks DCG😁
Brilliant setup! What a lovely bike! - CJ
Thanks CJ 😁
Great luggage taym and glad your enjoying the bike which I must say are a good looking bike the luggage such a simple system if you can use both hands😂 to remove it and when it’s off it looks perfect happy days just be careful in this terrible British weather we are having this year take care
Thanks Nick 😁great isn’t it 😁
Hi TAYM,
Great to see you out in the wonderful English summer. 🤣🤣🤣
Keep the vids coming.
Really cold this morning in Oz - about 14 deg C on the east coast. Had to rug up with the full winter woolies. 😂😂😂
Great luggage choice.
Thanks R 😁 it’s not been much better here in our summer 😂😂
Great looking bit of kit that TAYM,very well designed.
Thanks Barry 😁
Lovely bike and I would have one tomorrow. If that was your only bike it would cover all bases. Luggage isn’t a bad price compared with the hard stuff and much better looking. I am glad that you are happy with it. I hope your wife is too. Ride safe. Dave N.
Thanks Dave 😁
Very neat looking luggage. I like the way that the pannier frame removes easily!
Thanks GBD 😁
Brilliant luggage set up Mr TAYM. And it all looks very subtle and stylish on your beautiful, blue GSX 8R. You made the right choice 👍🏽
Thanks Bruce 😁
Glad you're happy with your Suzuki 😊, really like the luggage 👍. I think once Mrs Taym has experienced that little pillion seat, you'll be going on weekends away by yourself. It looks like a 30 mile max comfort on the pillion. The rider's seat looks alot more comfortable. Take her for a local spin first before going on the holiday 😊
Thanks Bally😁 yes, I need to do some research on the pillion seat😁🤔
You sound very pleased with your bike , nice !!! were finding it hard riding on dry roads 😂
I am indeed 😁 thanks Keith 😁
For a sporty looking bike that luggage looks great and you are not going to get anything cheaper unless you are buying secondhand, iv'e put soft pannier bags on my T120 from Motech and they were just under £500. Glad you are still loving the bike take care 👍
Thanks Mark 😁
Good morning Taym very smart luggage system I like the idea of being able to remove the pannier rack makes the bike very usable.
Same sporty bikes and screens always seem to direct the wind to your helmet I put the proper Bronze touring one on helps a bit. Is your screen adjustable because I find now the more I have it in the higher position it makes it more windy around the helmet it’s one battle that never stops.
I said you have one awesome looking bike there. 👍🏍️😎🙏
Thanks Derek 😁 I shall investigate screens 😁 hope you are surviving ok 😁
Just about taym 👍🏍️
Hepco & Becker also builds a similar system for hard/soft bags, top case, and tank bag (with locking ring).
Thanks ES 😁 I shall have a look at that 😁
Great bike , love it. I think you have made great improvements to the usabillity of the bike, made it more like an old gsx that used to do everything sports/touring/commuting (but with modern performance). 👍👍🏍
Thanks Paul 😁 yes, some say they think it looks katana ish 🤔😁
Nice looking chevy in the parking lot
Thanks MJW 😁 always something interesting there 😁
It looks a very impressive bike. I'd be proud to own one.
Thanks Mark 😁
Hiya TAYM. Really smart looking luggage set up. I think it flows with the lines of the bike and worth every penny. Regards, Mo 😊 👍
Thanks Mo 😁
Nice gear Mr TAYM.
Thanks Chris 😁
Morning TAYM well I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again it’s a lovely looking bike your Suzuki very nice in blue😊 luggage looks like a good compromise as well🤔 trouble is you’ll now have to go on a tour of your subscribers 🤪 the “taymite tour “as you might say 😝 carry on that man Caio for now tat ta👍🏻
Thanks HN 😁 spot on, it’s all about compromise 😁 and I think it does it well 😁
Very impressive 👍
Thanks HS 😁
Evening Taym 😊 that top box / bag is fantastic, and the 73s are great aswell good choice, Taym 😊 Ta Ta
Thanks AR 😁
Hi, I have 8s and now at 3600 miles and loving it. Just had 2nd service which cost £230 approx so well happy. Want to do the nc500 this year so will most likely need luggage so your timing is perfect. Great review.
Thanks Trevor 😁 Wonderful 😁
Looks excellent that TAYM 👌, what a well designed bit of kit , doesn't spoil the lines of the bike either! You get what you pay for quality wise .
Cheers Mel 🍻
Thanks Mel 😁
I love that bike in blue! I ran across some online yesterday, tempting at $9.5K here in California.
The luggage looks great on the bike as well. SW Motech make good gear, it should do the trick for years. Love how it tears down when the luggage is off the bike. I’ve had their rack on my 02 ZZR 1200 since 07 or so… with Givi hard cases and they come off fairly clean considering it’s holding those huge hard cases.
Great bit of kit Mr TAYM!
Thanks PW 😁
A great sport/touring conversion for little money. A nice solution and more practical than what is on offer for the Daytona 660 at present. 👍
Thanks Terry 😁 how are you finding the 660😁
it's a shame they don't have a solution for the luggage where the velcro bits are able to go under and pillion seat or cowel replacement - would look so much better. They way it is atm it's so easy for someone to swipe a side bag if left unattended while fueling up or in a shop etc.
The bags look like they belong on there from factory. Great addition.
Thanks WB 😁
Raining everywhere its a conspiracy i blame anti motorcyclist Tesla drivers. Sounds nice that bike. Thanks TAYM.
@@daintree2455 Not raining here but we had about 3weeks of rain 🌧️ with about 3days that didn't rain so time for some nice winter days.
Nice days cold nights & morning gana be another "🥶JESUS🥶" rubbing hands together frost in morning 😂🤣.
I've had enough, I'm going out in the rain. Can't take it anymore 😂
@@simonhall5086 I understand.
It can be cathartic riding in the rain 🌧️ gentle-normal rain but not heavy rain as the concentration levels increase to a point the pressure's on.
More than likely 😂😂 thanks DT 😁
😂😂😂
10:00 Suzuki branded bags look good and fairly practical. My only issue with zip-lock bags like this (aside from them not being waterproof by design, requiring putting luggage into waterproof bags first) is that a potential thief only needs to have a single ballpoint pen to open these bags, which does not give me a lot of trust and sense of security when using them.
Thanks DK 😁 yes, thieves are always a concern, hard or soft cases 😁
Very nice looking bike mate. I was so close to buying that bike and putting the same luggage on it. Had it all priced up and ready to go, but I just couldn't get past the looks and style of the T100 and the laid-back riding styling. I'd be walking by now if i had the suzuki 😁😆😅🤣😂
😂😂😂😂 thanks Ian 😁
I know it wont be nice to look at, But maby try a small wind deflector for the widescreen. It might push most of the wind over your helmet. It worked wonders on my Honda cb500x. Glad you like your new bike. It looks exelent.
Thanks MDK 😁 I shall see what I can find 😁
Looks really smart and useful Taym and the rack on its own looks sleek and neat. Really like the Suzook, to me it looks like a baby BMW R1250RS and that's a good thing.😊
Has Mrs Taym sat on the back yet?because it looks to me as though her calves might be touching the panniers all the time.😮
Get yourself ( and Mrs Taym) down to Wiltshire for the Calne Bike Meet on Saturday 27th July. You could ride down and back in a day ( about 3-4 hours each way depending on how you view speed limits) or have a long weekend and visit Avebury or Lacock. 😊
No, Mrs TAYM hasn’t tried it yet 😁 I would love to but Mrs TAYM is so preoccupied with baby TAYM’s wedding, getting her to do anything is proving difficult 😁😂😂😂 might try myself 😁 thanks Ed 😁
Bonneville camping Taym correct leave Megatron and take Buddy camping with ya. Mine does dirt just fine magnificent slipper clutch. Just between you me and them more space than the interceptor by far but ah that mark two way lighter than the t100 and looking into crazy kleet tires for green laning. I actually prefer using enfield when wife isn't with me did surprise me . Six years with the triumph about 38000 on clock enfield just hit 2500 miles. It's great getting out there time to stop and smell the roses. Was drinking when mentioning STU ahhhhhh. Anyway probably going to camp this weekend as well I hope you get your setup squared away and let us in on how ya outfit them always great to view sorry my comments seem to run on fresh air boss is priceless. Great thumbnail BTW.
Thanks Jay 😁 took longer than the video 😂😂😂
All set for the euro tour now, See you at Harwich ferry terminal at 8pm! 🤣🤣🤣 tonight!
😂😂😂
Hi TAYM, the bike looks great with the luggage on, I have the SW Motech Urban cases 16.5 litres each & I think they enhance the look of the bike.
Thanks Les 😁 yes, they’re great aren’t they 😁
"Ay up TAYM" well it certainly looks good I reckon you have a good slick looking set of luggage on the GSX all at a pretty impressive price not at all bulky which some are impressive so it's nationwide travel now I guess 😉👌👍
Thanks Crumb 😁 already put it to use 😁
Morning Mr TAYM. I do think the panniers do well to hide the void, that nothingness area which used to be filled with shocks or exhaust. Nice kit 👍. I might have to think about a new helmet soon, I was looking at the stupidly named Glamster….any chance of you doing a quick video of yours please. No worries if not. Cheers
Thanks Ian 😁 I think I could do a video on my helmet 😂😂😂😂
Good video . I'm very glad the bike is working out ok for you.
The pannier system looks very smart , or as smart as any panniers can be . I'm wondering if the velcro straps could go under the seat with a bit of jiggling and fiddling ?
Not a bad price either as these things go.
My concern would be the waterproofing during sustained high speed travel .
Maybe FD could provide some guidance here, as he's a bit of an expert on the subject .😂
Thanks DS 😁 Hopefully the dry bag that comes with them will keep things dry😁 sadly, under that small rear seat is the locking system, hooks for securing it and tool kit. Anything but the thinnest of rope would prevent seat from closing. I could try cutting holes in the Velcro strips to allow the locking system and hooks go but fear that might weaken it. I might see if I can modify the bag so as to faster the top to the rear rack frame🤔 😂😂
To be fair the luggage makes the back end look better to me. Also I reckon the rev counter would look better with a needle not a solid bar. If that makes sense 🤪 made my eyes water too when you mentioned the wind just getting under your helmet 🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂 always look after your helmet 😂😂 thanks Trevor 😁
Lovely looking bike. The luggage works well and seems to keep the lines of the bike in proportion. 👍 I was wondering if you could put the pannier luggage strap under the pillion seat rather than across it? I guess it depends on the mechanism of the seat fixing.
Thanks Ian 😁 Yes the locking mechanism prevents anything 🤔 unless i can cut some holes in the straps😁
Nice video TAYM. Typical of the weather we've been having. The cafe at Krazy Horse is good . That screen might be a whole lot better if it had a reverse flip on the top edge. Does that bag connecting strap fit under the pillion pad?
Thanks Dave 😁 yes screens are funny things aren’t they. From a riding point of view it’s not a problem, it’s just the videoing that it seems to pick it up.😁 too much going on under the rear seat 😕
I am disappointed that you could not do the saddle bags on and off with one hand... your getting old sir! Lol that's what I learned on uncle Stu channel! 😊
😂😂😂😂 well, actually, I lied😂😂 I can do it one handed but not with my left hand 😂😂😂 thanks LoY😁
Such a very swish bike!!! Luggage looks great! You will have to sort something out for the Mrs!!! Can it attach under the seat?
Thanks TBG 😁 yes, I am sure something can be done 😁 sadly can’t go under seat😕
Wow ! It seems I'm out of touch with the price of motorcycle luggage these days Taym, I like the clever almost invisible pannier mountings. Someones put a lot of thought into those, is the curved removable part made from tube or solid bar ? I think ill be sticking with my 30 year old topbox & my old set of throw overs !
Thanks Gerry 😁 it’s tube but pretty think 😁 in total it cost a fraction of my Triumph tiger hard cases 😱 bmw racks and boxes you are looking between £1500- £2500😁
@TAYM Do they sell the Rack Only? The pole on each side, I can't seem to find it
They do indeed 😁 can’t remember how much but think it’s around £200 😁 thanks SL 😁
Such a beautiful and great sounding machine! Any names yet? ❤
Thanks Chris 😁 no name yet 😁
@@TAYM Beualla??
@@Thruxtonrider21 🤔😂😂
Luggage looks really good, could the strap go under the seat?
Thanks MR😁 Sadly not, too much going on under there😁
Envious gorgeous bike and I couldnt agree more on the 40-90 comment what else do you need and go in any gear. Torque is what floats my boat nowadays. Nice luggage fits in well like factory.
What’s it like in the dry😂 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Still take this over the trumpet 765
Thanks Volt 😁 yes, cant wait for some dry 😁
Nifty. All you need now is a classic brit to put them on. Automatic luggage waterproofing system. The waterproofing agent is engine oil. 😂
😂😂😂😂 thanks Charlie 😂😂
O your a young chap, I was picturing some older guy with bicycle clips and a cloth cap
😂😂 thank you very kindly sir 😁 i always remove my bicycle clips when at the stables in case i scare the horses 😂 thanks Paul 😁
@@TAYM splendid
80 BHP with all that torque is all the bike anyone really needs ... I know that's a bit of a cliche but it's
true nonetheless . Personally I'd always take the 8s because of the ergonomics but that's just my preference and being brought up with upright bikes 😊
The bags are as unobtrusive as luggage can be especially the strawberry box ... very good.
Thanks Dave 😁 you could always put the bar risers on the 8R 😁
Young Derek be hitting you up for moto camping now TAYM 🦒😁😆😂🤣.
Excellent 😁 thanks RR 😁 I shall await Derek’s call 😁
