This is like Barney’s “Cheerleader Effect” theory. As a group they seem like the best people to have as friends. But, when you look at them individually, their flaws are way more apparent.
Except for Marshal, he's a cool and nice dude. He has flaws but he doesn't suck. I can't recall him doing anything bad other than accepting the job without talking about it with his wife. While the rest of the friend group, yh I can recall alot of shitty things they've done.
@@formerunsecretarygeneralba9536 I guess something that can count as "bad" is literally being too nice to the point where he ends up getting screwed over by trusting people too much
I think one of the worst things Ted did was when Robin told him about how Barney would get fired if Zoe's protest succeeded and he chose to support Zoe (who he hadn't been dating that long) over having his friend's back or even taking that into consideration since she "Might be the one". Same thing with throwing the parties to hit on Robin not caring that Marshall needed to study
Yeah, stuff like that is why I actually agree that Ted is worse than Barney. Barney is shitty and selfish in a really horrific way towards women he doesn’t know and wants to sleep with, but genuinely caring and giving to the few people in his life he deems important (which is why he’s actually a half-decent boyfriend if a woman moves out of ‘mindless sex’ zone into ‘girlfriend zone’). Ted is terrible to everyone in his life, and will only behave selflessly when it benefits him to do so.
Ted will just throw anyone under the bus to further his chance of finding “the one”. Marshall-best friend. Doesn’t care that he has his exam. Barney- another best friend-takes the side of his girlfriend who he barely knew Bc she was another “the one”. Still don’t understand why Barney was the one apologizing in this situation when legit all his friends except robin dumped him. Yet, he still maintains that he’s somehow more moralistic than Barney.
Lmao. The dude just got his "best friend's" project cancelled just for a stupid dinosaur building. He slept with his "best friend's" ex. He is a manipulator. Pretty sure the accident was some kind of manipulation for ted to forgive barney. He made a close friend's wife to draw him NAKED. After breakup with robin, uses robin to get a girl manipulating everyone through scuba diving gear. And gullible women like Meg (women from fake apartment owner), Abbie are used. He kissed ted's mother. But he can get a pass over shitty childhood and automatically ted becomes the worst character? OKAY...
Ted eventually let go of Zoey and even went behind her back in order to save Barney. Not sure how that's "not taking things into consideration." Now the parties thing was definitely Ted at his worst, but it's not like that makes him the worst human being alive.
@@wweghorstgoldbridgesgreatestbut he only did that after he understood, that he'd break up with Zoey anyways. If he thought he could end up with Zoey, he wouldnt have helped Barney
if you think about it, since this is Ted's perspective we don't really know what's real and what's not. Notice how Tracy is like perfect with no flaws, that's how Ted saw her. He probably did exagerate Barney's character because he really doesn't seem like a real person at all tbh.
@@nicholebaldwin1332 Barney is not a plot device, he's a character who has an arc where he grows and learns and changes. Ted is static because they need him to follow through with the ending they wrote at the beginning, so he stays the same the whole way through and all the lessons he supposedly learns amount to nothing. Barney's progress also has to be undone so that Ted can do the same thing he's always been trying to do, then we get a cheap 2-minute scene that tries to replace all the character development they just undid for the last whole season and then some. Ted does the exact same things as Barney, he just can't be honest with himself about who he is so he copes by being "a good guy." Barney can't be honest either though so he copes by being "a bad guy." Both drop the act when they're backed into a corner and forced to be emotionally honest.
i dont think he made him look that bad tho, i mean even without having the prior knowledge of this theory everyone still loves barney and hates ted. its more like he only told crazy stories about barney but didnt really go in depth towards barney's real personality (probably because barney was always been very private about himself) although ted told some stories about barney's childhood and issues. i didnt find barney that bad tbh ted kinda sucks in his stories and he never really told stories that he is a good guy or something like that. also if ted is really that bad then how come robin was smiling at him at the end, and how did tracy married and had kids with him if he really is a sucky person why didnt they got divorced? this theory is good it somehow makes sense but there are holes in it.
Barney’s moral compass points south but he admits that, other characters keep saying they are the good guy while they keep doing horrible things and keep justifying it by saying but I’m the good one
in what ways? He never ruins anyone's life over delusional views on romance. He tricks and deceives very young and hot women into sleeping with him; that's it. That's the end of the transaction. They can move on with their lives, as can he. More than that, he is the only one of the friend group that actually goes out of his way to improve his friends lives; taking an unannounced trip to SF to get Lily to come back to Marshall, finishing Robin's resume and sending it to a bunch of networks and getting her a HUGE job in her career, etc. The biggest thing is that he doesn't lie about his lifestyle. He knows meaningless casual sex is all he's after and all the women are after too. Ted on the other hand thinks he's the quintessential nice guy and perfect romantic, but he constantly cheats on the women he's in relationships with, lies about who he's really in love with, ruins almost all of the women's lives he was involved in by leading them on only to selfishly break up with them due to still being in love with 1, 2, or 4 of his other "the ones". Ted is by far the worst, and Barney is actually not bad, like at all.
To be fair, we see Tracy from teds perspective, as he’s the narrator and of course he’s only going to remember the good aspects of her character, and would leave out the bad in a telling of her to their children, and given she’s passed away, and while she probably was a lovely person in reality, she also probably had flaws that Ted doesn’t want to remember.
Yea she is kinda idealized through ted's eyes and her character doesnt have much nuance (also prob bc we dont get much time with her) but honestly in my personal opinion she's too good for a man as mediocre as ted mosby lol
@@alyssaq2001 and that is why I love himym. You don't like the "protagonist" or the main character. Which is so accurate, because we view ourselves as being either the worst or the best and Ted always made himself to be the good guy in every situation when you can clearly see that he might try to be a good guy but he is really not that great.
He definitely sucks the least but there are times that he kinda sucks too. But his mistakes are easily repairable and he learns from them. He’s not my favorite character, that honor goes to Patrice. But he’s an easy second.
@@lewanbroski504 He is a good honest character!....But he is a soyboy feminine Betamale!....In most episodes one can find him crying and that is offputting!......He has no masculinity!....But then again, none of those shows did(frnds, himym etc)..... Even though Barney is also emasculate, but his serial sexcapades, lack of commitment, and using women for sex are the few things that make the show a bit cool and fun...!.... TED is the absolute worst however;...So No arguments there!...
The rating for Barney could only be justified if you take into consideration the famous HIMYM fan theory (which NPH himself agrees with), Ted told lies about Barney so that in comparison he himself looks good and his kids will root for him when he will try and ask Robin out AGAIN !!!
That theory all works if you also consider the good moments to be false. Or we have to think “when Barney bad, it's a lie, when Barney good, it's true”
@@leonardorodriguez9121 I mean that's assuming everything bad that's said about Barney is false but I'd argue what is much more likely is that Ted was exaggerating a lot on some things. People in the comments here keep mentioning that Barney apparently sold a woman and frankly, that's just so over the top for any normal person that it borders on unbelievable
My question is for this theory, why would Ted admit the morally crooked acts he had done when he was under the influence of Barney's company if Barney never did anything like that. If Barney had never done anything bad and wasn't a bad influence that isn't an exaggeration at this point, that is series of straight lies trought the whole series. And if you say it were all lies, nothing matters bc anything could be true or false.
I always viewed it as not having a good childhood. Marshall had a good childhood, grew to become a well rounded person. Only problem I can see is his lack of romantic relationship so he thought lily was the best. Lily. Has a deadbeat dad. So has a fear of being abandoned. In her eyes manipulation is how you get things done. Barney. Didn't have a father figure. And his mother was a nympho. So has a unhealthy view on sex Robin. Wanted her fathers approval. So she tried to pursue Barney when he stopped showing interest. Ted just sucks.
yes!! in Lily's case too, because of her deadbeat dad she always tried to be present and have control over her friend's problems like a way of showing affection
Lol Ted is super naive with no self awareness and has special snowflake syndrome from being coddled and sheltered by his parents. Basically a narcissist
Don’t know how any reasonable person could justify putting Barney that far to the left. He gets women drunk to sleep with them; he deliberately pursues girls who have just barely turned 18; he stole a woman’s car and left her in the middle of the woods. And that doesn’t even begin to cover his list of issues. He may have had the best character arc, but that does not excuse the fact that he is a manipulative, cruel, and narcissistic throughout almost the entire show. I’d put him as worse than Lily and Ted by far.
He was reasonable with his points but I just love lily (Ted kinda sucks) but Barney is a great entertaining character who was probably in extreme memories in teds head BUT I don’t think Ted just made up that story of the car in the woods so yes nothing will ever excuse Barney’s behavior
Freaking thank you! Also: even though it's Ted's story, we only have that to go by. So that doesn't excuse anything that Barney has ever done. Even without the exaggeration, Barney is a manipulative pyscho who exercises his mommy issues on literally anyone. Robin was his target. He couldn't get her the old fashioned way so he terrorized her and took advantage of a very sweet woman just so Robin would say yes to him and then can't make it 3 years because why? ROBIN WORKS TOO MUCH? Um no. He's the worst, and Ted is a close second.
I maybe need to rewatch, but all his "plays" were based on make himself look better in stupid ways, like disguise himself as a prince or a rich man, not to feed alcohol to girls, also with the "18", i recall he had a obsession with woman not passing 30, not a fixation for 18
I think something to keep in mind is that the story is told from Teds perspective so all the weird overtop things they do is probably due to how ted describes it, as well as how everyone is characterized. So with Barney being a sex crazed lying manipulator might be heavily influenced by how Ted thought of Barney.
and: probably Ted was a much bigger pain as a human. He tried to tell a story of him being the hero of his story and even in his version he is a horrible egocentric monster
Every time there's some kind of mistake in the writing, this is what I tell myself haha There's two I can think of off the top of my head and they're really little things, like Scooter's real name or the contradiction in episodes over whether or not Ted called Trudy after the Pineapple Incident. I'm a total nerd so I actually noticed these things, but the fact that the entire series is supposed to be recounted from memories 20+ years later just makes these neat little quirks rather than bothersome incontinuities.
Yeah that checks out for me too. If you had a friend that was a little big into partying and dating and the guy ended up with the girl you were infatuated... Probably you would paint him on a bad light when telling the story That being said. Barney is not the worst, he just consistantly and consistently sucks so we get used to his basic suckage, but whenever he does something good we praise him to no end. IMO a couple of good deed don't change a man. If he was a real person Barney would be a home wrecker and a sucky person to be involved with I do agree Ted is an entitled nice guy, teaching the lesson of "a no it's the way to a yes" puts him into borderline rapey psycho mentality. Not able to compromise and complaining why the universe isn't shaped his way at every moment he gets.
If we think about it, Ted and Barney are too similar but Ted makes himself look better saying that when he sleeps with someone "he does it with love" and Barney represents him as a bastard who just wants sex
@@dalilaesparza3268 well if you think about it, Ted doesn't usually try to hook up like Barney he just wants to find the right one while Barney just wants to get in any women's pants
Defending Barney as just a plot device is really funny cause they're literally all plot devices. You can't claim you're analysing all of them as 'people' and then say one of them has different parameters attached, especially one who many dudebros find aspirational. Especially when you rank Robin as 'sucks' for moments where her behavior was clearly also only to further the plot. You even mentioned that when you said she only acts that way when it comes to certain situations with Ted and Barney. weird ranking,
I always believed the theory that Barney is actually a normal guy, with flaws and good traits, but Ted makes him seem bad so he's kids could support him going after robin, who is barney's ex-wife. I was even discussing this with my english teacher some weeks ago.
That wouldn't make sense at all because, just like their kids, most people believe Barney to had this amazing change of character. So it's not true when Barney bad but it's true when Barney good? Also, why would he want their kids to hate uncle Barney?
Even if some of his worst actions are exaggerated, he still lies to multiple women for sex on a daily basis. That still makes him the worst one by default.
I go back and forth with Lily, she often does things that are just the exact kind of manipulative and nosy that drive me off the wall but then she shows herself to be the kindness, must understanding person ever and it's just impossibly to hate her. Ted is the jerk thought, I'm with you on that lol
lily left marshall, ruined the dress, purposely ruined relationships, lied to marshall about her debt, and has the audactity to get incredibly mad when marshall or anyone else make small mistakes, lily is insufferable and i only realized after rewatching the show multiple times
@@OGflig i only now started watching the show and i absolutely hate lily. she did some of the most messed up stuff aside from barney and is most definitely the most manipulative.
@@OGflig plus she got incredibly mad on him after she prioritised her dream job, that she got the offer for for like half a year (or whatever) and had no idea before that she could do it over marshalls life long dreamjob of becoming a judge...
Barney is a cool character and the greatest in the show, but he is literally the worst person. The lying and manipulation. Breaking the bro code. Him stealing someone's truck and the scuba suit. Ted points out Barney should be in jail for multiple reasons in one of the episodes so there is a lot more that is not shown. He also used Marshall as leverage on that casino game he plays. The cameras and illegal recordings of friends and hook ups. Also, lets not forget in one episode he said he basically sold a woman.
He also tricked a woman into giving him a blowjob. A woman who wasn't aware that she was giving him a blowjob. And when he goes to Marshall after having sex with Robin, he says that he did something bad and that he had sex with Robin and Marshall asks, as if this were an even remotely normal question, whether "Robin knew that he'd had sex with her". I don't remember the exact details, but Marshall thinks it's possible that Barney "had sex" with Robin without her knowledge.
@Cio Lake Disgusting. And so many viewers don't realise these things. There's also an episode of Family Guy in which Brian straight-out rapes Lois. But if you tried to find any of that on youtube you only find a clip of Brian literally jumping Lois because he's so horny. The episode I am talking about is one where Brian and Peter switch bodies and Brian then "has sex" with Lois whose completely unaware of the fact that it's Brian in Peter's body and not Peter.
totally agree, yeah he has some good moments but he is literally a sexual assaulter and that shits not okay! And he's incredibly fatphobic as well. But i also think ted should be moved down a more towards the totally the worst end because he harbours quite awful ideas about trans people, like there's literally two moments where he says that the worst things that he could find out about a new girl he was dating would be if they 'were dudes', to use the language that he used
Robin -> Only wants what she can't get, subconsciously loves to have ted has an orbiter. - Cheats on Kevin (the nicest guy ever, well behind Marshall of course) - Not really her fault per se but dating Barney after dating Ted is kinda meh Ted -> Too egotistical about is love life, loses sight of other important stuff, and sometimes uses love to justify ridiculous actions by his part. Gotta think that if he kinda sounds like a douche as the narrator, imagine what really happened from a neutral perspective. Barney -> An overall very shitty person objectively speaking, treats women as objects and overall has very borderline prison inducing beliefs -> sexual predator -> Cheats on Nora Lily -> She's the worst. -Doesn't tell Marshall about her credit card debt until strictly necessary - Manipulates Ted's love life - Bets on friend's life for her own entertainment (Marshall is in on this too) - Thinks she's the ultimate advisor, so therefore she has the right to change things in her friend group that don´t go her way. - Selfishly goes to San Francisco, although she could follow her dream in NY anyway, she fails and therefore comes back, she ultimately doubted her marriage with Marshall enough to find and excuse to run away from it.
Robin: Acts a bit crazy sometimes; middle sucks. Ted: Self-sabotaging, too much of a hopeless romantic and can be a douche often; sucks a lot Barney: Literally lies to woman everyday to make them sleep with him, ruins multiples people’s birthday, stag dos, etc for his own benefit, manipulates Robin to accept his engagement, has secret cameras in his friends houses, stole all of Ted’s stuff once, hits on his friends wife regularly and, oh, he mentioned he sold a woman once; eh, he’s not too bad!? Wtf, I love this show, and the character of Barney, but how is he given such a pass because he has tender moments sometimes?! One of the scenes you used to justify him being not that sucky is him telling Nora he cheated on her! That said, Marshall and Lily are spot on.
Thank you. Yes. He lost me right there. I hate how people hate on ted but romantize Barney. I love Barney as much as everyone else, he is probably the best character in the show but if they were real Barney is a predator that needs to be in jail.
OMG I just wrote out a long comment with the exact same sentiment. THANK YOU. I totally agree. barney is by FAR the worst and he gets forgiven for everything because people love him. don't get me wrong, he's funny. but he SUCKS as a human being.
also I remember watching that scene where Barney says he sold a woman once and I got sick to my stomach. I think the writers took that too far. and it amazes me that the viewers (and the other characters) are supposed to pretend that that never happened.. and we do.
My interpretation of Barney is it’s Neil Patrick Harris’ interpretation of straight men in a humorous way 😂😂 like how he’s obsessed with drawing boobs on everything
So I guess the question for Barney is should we take into account his redemption arc or how he was as a whole because depending on the season, Barney wouldn't end up in the same place on the doesn't suck - suck the most scale
The way Barney and Ted act around Robin when she has a boyfriend and they’re pining for her is much more terrifying than any behavior she ever showed when in their shoes
Wouldn’t say Robin sucked… she sucked but in a way all humans do: she acted crazy when she was emotionally unstable and sometimes just couldn’t handle certain situations- that’s being a human and I don’t see how she would suck
robin rejects ted like 7 times and still has the guts to tell lily at the end that she should have been the one to end up with ted even tho she never wanted kids. And she tries to talk ted out off marying stella just because she still liked ted even tho she rejects him later when ted tells her that he loves her. I dont hate robin btw. i think she should be in the middle off the suck meter, only marshall and barney suck less than her. (lily is so fucking selfish)
@@Reiskamans Robin never loved ted after s2. It was all ted's obsession for which he kept pursuing her in spite of multiple rejection. She knew ted was a safe haven so she just wanted him around in her crisis. What She told lily at the end was an inconsistency of her character made to suit the finale.
One thing that always pissed me off is when Marshall and Lily have that big fight in season 9. Lily says "You were more selfish to me than I have EVER been to you!" so obviously Marshall says "You broke off our engagement and moved to San Francisco" or something and then she acts like he brought it up unprompted or somehow crossed a line?? She literally said EVER so, at least in my mind, he has every right to bring that up. Maybe I'm wrong/missing something but I just always thought it was wrong of her.
Yeah - I actually think this highlights something no one picks up on, which is that Lily and Marshall are bad at conflict. They’re both super conflict avoidant - they constantly hide feelings and opinions they think might hurt the other - so when things reach a breaking point, they explode in unpleasant ways. And when they do fight, they’re constantly being dragged back into other unresolved fights. Ideally, Marshall and Lily should have had an honest conversation when they got back together about Lily going to San Francisco, why she did, what Marshall felt, and hopefully come to understand each other and reach some sort of resolution. But they didn’t, so it’s just been a ticking time bomb for 7 years that comes out here. And even in this fight - while it isn’t necessarily crossing a line for Marshall to bring this up, it is hugely unconstructive to the fight they’re actually having. It opens up a whole separate can of worms, and distracts from what they need to resolve, which is Marshall accepting the judge position without telling Lily. If they were good at conflict resolution, either a) Marshall wouldn’t have brought it up, or b) Lily would have recognized this is him lashing out and steered the conversation back to the issue at hand, while noting this is something they need to discuss later.
Ya I believe what lily did by canceling their wedding just to paint at san fransico was just stupid. I mean she could have continued the wedding and join a different program after. But in that fight in my opinion marshall just crossed the line. Its all in the past, theres no point in bringing back old pain and disagreements. He just said that to defend himself to make sure what he did was reasonable, which was not. I mean they already AGREED to go to rome and the best thing he should have done was just to tell lily from the start, not by accepting it immediately. And plus he called her job a 'hobby' which is disrespectful to artists as well.
This topic always rubbed me the wrong way. Everyone acts like Lily was the only person who broke things off and Marshall was a poor boy who had his heart broken. Y'all, they literally could have just had Lily take the summer to find herself or whatever and postponed the wedding or talk it out and decide as partners to have Lily study the next summer after the wedding. Lily was incredibly selfish, but everyone seemingly forgot Marshall saying "If you walk out that door, we're done. You're never gonna see me again." He kind of gave an insane ultimatum that was way out of left field. Lily could be seen as the main perpetrator of the fight. However, Marshall is not blameless. Lily still gets majority of the blame, but Marshall has a hefty amount of blame deserved for him, too.
@@DeuxAces yes! I think that its more realistic to acknowledge this. Like in real relationships a big fight/end of a relationship is always very nuanced and theres never one person to blame (obvi thats debatable with cases of abuse but thats not the point here).
You're letting Barney off the hook too much. You put responsibility on the other characters and treat Barney kinda differently. He sucks more than you think. What kind of excuse is "he is a character playing a character". What up?!
He is a bad person, I agree. Its just that he had the best growth in the show which was ruined in the last moment. From a commitment phobic misogynist to committed and honest husband, he grew up. The writers screwed up big time!
I agree with this. I don't like the thought that he went around completely degrading the morale of every woman he sleeps with. It's just downright scum-y. Sure, he had great growth and he was good to his friends, but you don't forget something as big as this and call him a good guy.
He is a rapist. If you lie about who you are to get consent for sex, you didn’t get consent, and that’s rape. Also when he tells Marshall that he had sex with Robin, Marshall asks “does Robin know” which means that his first though was Barney raped her. Honestly they all suck for being friends with him and not turning him into the police.
Or does he? Remember Ted is telling the story so his character is exaggerated a bit. He wants his kids to like Uncle Barney but also be sure they aren't like him nor does he want them to feel like Barney and Robin should reconcile.
The older I grow, the more i loathe everything barney says and does. His character is overtly misogynistic and the good he has done in the show can't overshadow the all t he wrongs by a long margin. I try to speicfically rewatch marshall centric episodes anyways, that guy is like a beacon of goodness and warmth!!
My least favorite thing about Ted is that he’s a bad friend. He always chooses girls over them or puts his own feelings first. Like when he essentially choose Zoey over Barney. When nothing could make him stay in New York, not even his friends begging him, but some random girl (even if she turned out to be the mother) could.. hell, he knows his obsession with Robin isn’t good for her, but he carries on anyways.. he does disloyal things like that throughout the series, but whenever someone else makes a mistake, like When Barney felt bad when he and Robin first hooked up, Ted was so unforgiving.
He was gonna leave because he had feelings for Robin. He had moved on and then he met Tracy. He also realized he no longer loved Robin multiple times on the wedding weekend and meeting Tracy made staying in New York not that bad. Also if your most sleezeball friend hooked up with the girlfriend up to that point you love the most how would you feel?
Ted flipping out about Robin and Barney hooking up made me so angry. They were broken up, all by mutual consent, Barney didn’t plan for it to happen, and it happened like a year or more after Ted and Robin were officially and publicly over. Ted was with Stella, so he had no reason to get angry with Barney for sleeping with Robin. It would be completely different if Robin cheated on him, or if they had a nasty break up that caused people to choose sides, but that’s not what happened. Robin wasn’t “Ted’s”. She was her own person and Barney could go after her if he wanted to. Also. Him being more angry about Barney sleeping with her more than Barney literally perving on women made him more upset. He saw Robin as his. He didn’t even consider why it happened, or if Robin was willing. His conversation with Barney in the car was literally “you stole her, she’s my leftovers” instead of “did she consent to this?!” Was illuminating. Ted never cared about Robin. He cared about having her and having her on standby. The Bro Code thing was just an excuse. Robin shouldn’t have had to feel guilty for “betraying” Ted; they were over. Also Robin didn’t need to tell him anyway; just that makes me feel angry. It wasn’t Ted’s business.
@@johnathankorkie4984 but Robin wasn’t his girlfriend, she was his ex. She also freely consented, so Ted shouldn’t have been angry to the point of ending the friendship over it. He could feel sad or jealous, that’s normal, but since Ted never cared how Barney treated his conquests, he was on shaky ground as it was. If Ted had consistently been turned off by Barney’s behavior towards other women, then his anger would have made some sort of sense. But he wasn’t turned off, so had no moral standing on that ground. Especially since the only moral guideline was the “Bro Code”, and Ted didn’t take it that seriously either. Yes he did stuff that aligned with the Bro Code, but he never especially cared about it, or followed it with any enthusiasm, and when he did follow it, it was literally basic stuff like calling about cat fights or whatever other small things guys already do for each other. Not to mention, Barney frequently broke his own rules, and Ted was fine with that too. Having feelings for an ex doesn’t entitle you to control what that ex does or who they sleep with. He had no moral standing, arbitrary (Bro Code) or otherwise. He was just being a possessive asshole. And it’s especially heinous since he was with Stella.
@@simonakatsman974 yeah but you don't hook up with your friends ex for the most part. Its not a property thing but that shit is gonna sting. Especially if it was a long term girlfriend who you were in love with. And he didn't get livid with Robin aswell. Not to mention Barney was also taking him away from his friends on his birthday without his consent. If a good friend of yours hooked up with the ex you were the most serious with how would you feel especially when both Ted and Robin had admitted there were lingering feelings. Also how could you trust a buddy if they hook up with your ex next time you have a girlfriend. The reason to end that friendship isn't anger but similar to a relationship the trust is gone
100% Agree on Lily she's the worst, and I absolutely HATE that she never got any comeuppance for her behavior. It would've been so satisfying to get at least one episode of it. As for Ted. The only thing I disagree on is that the reason he's single is not because these beautiful women were never good enough for him. It's that they weren't right for him, and THEY eventually left HIM. Robin wanted career and no kids, so that ended. Victoria left Ted to go to Germany and he finally got to be with Robin and since then she was never able to believe that Ted wouldn't always be in love with her. Stella literally left him on the altar, and Zoe cared more about her building than she did Ted and his career. He IS a douche, but when it came to women, he was ready to settle down several times. The women were not. He really did need to wait for "the one".
i think the worst flaw in marshall is that he’s got some serious internalised misogyny. like how he totally supports barney and ted all the time when they’re going for a girl and craves to be their wingman (even though he knows, because he knows the law, the girls are drunk and therefore cannot give consent) but as soon as robin sleeps with the naked man he completely slut shames her. not only that but his whole behaviour in the episode on “names for babies” where the only reason he doesn’t want to have a girl is the fact that they’re being sexualised. he doesn’t realise how fucked up his way of thinking of women is and how often he says really hurtful and misogynistic things and can be thankful that the two women in his friend group are his wife and a girl that was raised as a boy and therefore isn’t as much hurt by the stuff he says. putting marshall at the top and least sucky person only works due to the male perception of the series.
@@nadja7228 I completely agree and for that reason I also give Lily some lead way with leaving before their wedding to go to San Francisco. Yes it was selfish, but personally I’ve seen in a lot of relationships how once the woman gets married, only the man gets to grow in his career and the woman has to put him first. I think lily leaving for San Francisco was her realizing that she never took the chance to fully attempt an art career because she lost herself in her relationship and that she wouldn’t get the chance to do anything once she got married. Really she shouldn’t have waited 8 whole years before realizing this but as someone who’s also worried about losing herself in a relationship, I get where she’s coming from.
Marshall was an asshole to Barney numerous times: Like whole slapping shit or When he was trying to get as much money as possible from Barney for the painting Barney on the other hand made a lot for Marshal Etc
You’re way too kind on Barney. Yes he has good character growth but he constantly lies, cheats, manipulates. His CONSTANT misogyny honestly makes it hard for me to watch the show. I just roll my eyes every time. He once made a joke about sexual assault charges. I definitely think he should be at the bottom along with Ted. Lily might be manipulative but she never joked about sexual assault. She sucks medium. And robin isn’t that bad at all. She didn’t do that much wrong.
Robin cheated once, she left most of her relationships for her career only to regret her decisions on multiple occasions, tried to meddle in her exes relationships/lives, AND she DOESN'T LIKE FIELD OF DREAMS.
I remember Barney saying something along the lines of... "The only time you wait a month to sleep with a girl is if she's 17 years and 11 months old." Sounds like a great guy.
@7:34 this feels like a huge cop out, I thought the point of this video was to view them as people, and you have just squirmed around all of the scummy things he has done, like watch the March madness episode and tell me he doesn’t suck WAY more then robin, like he has good moments but idc I feel like you are mixing relevence to the plot in with this when it should NOT be a factor
- instead of telling a self absorbed story to his kids, he should be telling them. Kids, be more like uncle Marshall. - I think Barney would also be in the 'Sucks a lot area' or above. also probably Ted was exaggerating how Barney was so that his kids don't mind him dating uncle Barney's ex wife. Because his kids have always seen Barney as the nice uncle who takes care of his daughter.
Nope be a bit like Barney because in modern times people such as Marshall don’t go far in life.Marshall got very lucky in finding Lily most young girls would have played him and he would have eventually turned into barney.
I think Ted is the worst. He has the typical traits of narcissistic personality: he wants to find a girl who meets his needs, but he's not able to compromise or change a bit for them; he loves bombing at the beginning and then he brakes up with them when he gets tired or when they don't fit in his checklist; he takes his friends for granted and his needs are more important than the others. Barney on the other side cares a lot about his friends and always show affection and appreciation in his own way. He's a player with women who doesn't know, but why should he care? I mean, he just wants to have fun, but the moment he care about someone his best side comes out. I partially agree with Lily, but I don't think she is the worst. It's true, she is manipulative, but I like that she always says what she thinks and plays like a 'mom' role. So, in my ranking I would change just the last two: with Lily sucks bigly and Ted the worst.
Barney is still the worst by far imo. "Why should he care? He just wants to have fun" he should care because they're people, wether he knows them or not, and having fun doesn't justify extreme manipulative behavior and litterally selling a woman.
@@thebelen2359 I see your point and Barney does do a lot of really bad stuff but in terms of the characters ted stays the same in all 9 seasons and always is being bored of every girl after a while. Like when he runs away with Victoria from her own wedding even while knowing from experience how that must feel to Klaus. But then he still dumps her just because he wants someone even more that clearly is not in love with him. Barney on the other hand has a character development and even though he does everything to get layed he is a loyal friend to the group. Also (correct me if I'm wrong here) I think after he has his first real relationship he doesn't really do bad stuff to girls anymore (except to Nora).
I like to think of the characters as more of "caricatures" and Ted is just an unreliable narrator. Why would he put Barney in a good light when in Ted's eyes, he was just there to be in the way of him getting with Robin? Marshall would be basically perfect, because he's Ted's best friend. Lilly constantly sabotaged things for Ted, so naturally he would find her to be annoying and conniving. Robin's flaws that are exaggerated can easily be seen as ones that Ted could see as either minor road blocks (her liking guns fore example) or things that he eventually found endearing and missed over the years. Honestly, I find the narration of the show a perfect excuse to have characters that are super exaggerated, and have situations be over blown. Because that's what happens when you tell stories, especially for things that happened years ago. Great video by the way!
I think the story of Lily and Marshall's break up is worst than her just leaving to go pain in San Francisco. Marshall and Lily talked about her applying and she said she just wanted to see if she could get in and she would never actually go. She lied multiple times about the topic before leaving and left with no consideration for Marshall's feelings. Plus, it's evident she only came back cause she was a failed artist who would never make it so she realized what she lost
Marshall is the soul of the group. The morality goes out the window when hes not there. (Commented just to help this video reach 300 comments, my fingers couldn't help it)
Eh, you kind of missed out a lot of stuff Marshall did here. He's a really great guy, but he's still not perfect. Like the way he pressured Lily to have thanksgiving dinner with her dad who neglected her as a child just because 'he's my family too'. That was way out of line in my opinion and very disrespectful to Lilys boundaries, and sort of dismissive to what Lily actually had to go through as a kid, trying to force her dad back into her life. He did a similar thing to Barney with his dad as well. I think it came from a place of misunderstanding though, because he had the best dad in the world, but still insensitive. Also the way he acted after Lily broke up with him to go to San Francisco. He kind of stalked her by tracking the activity on her credit cards, attempting to call her after she didn't want to be contacted, following "her" to some hotel in NY only to assault some guy who he thought was Lilys' new boyfriend. As Ted even put it "you're pathetic". I'm really glad that he moved on from this low point of his life though. He had his ups and downs just like everyone else, so imo, he 'sucks just a small amount', not perfect.
Remember, Marshal told Robin to keep a hairdryer to win his bet :) Ted didn't sabotage every relationship and I'd say deep down he wanted Robin the whole show UNTIL he met Tracy. It took Tracy for him to give up on Robin.
@@BullyMaguireTheAbsolute he was moving to Chicago because he knew he couldn't. He also knew she was getting married and he wouldn't make a move on her like Barney did to him.
@@JoybuzzerX That's quite wrong , Ted deciding to move to Chicago and the reason being Robin WAS true untill his revelation he had at the sun rise which showed him truly letting go of her as they portray her as a balloon and the deleted scene cements that when she asked "a what if " about them and Ted states that he stopped thinking of the what ifs and that he's truly happy
Himym has a big place in my heart. It makes me feel nostalgic and happy whenever I watch it. Still I would absolutely agree with your depiction of the characters, they mostly „suck“. But I would say that they suck in a way most people suck, they‘re not just archetypes but realistic characters with realistic flaws.
I will forgive Ted for forcing Robin to give up her dogs for one reason and one reason only. The creators confirmed that they only wrote this part in because Josh Radnor is highly allergic to dogs and they had to have EMS on standby for any scene with them
@Cio Lake Barney was a devil in earlier seasons i agree, but here I'm talking about the changes he had from S1 to S9, ruined in the last two episodes destroying all the character developments.
@Skarbie Well Going by your argument, Walter white is responsible for the meth business in world. Barney is bad and he's not glorified for his bad deeds.
He had a good development - but this is not the same as being good or medium sucking. If start doing maths and being reallyreally shitty at it, let's say 1 out of 10, and someone else starts with 6 - I might better my abilities the most (coming to 4) but I would still be worse than someone staying at 6. He grew but he started as a predator. It's ridiculous to make him suck less than Robin.
Preaching the choir on that one. Like, Ted frickin move on already! Robin, just what do you want exactly be clear! Lily, you cant control everything, treasure Marshall And Barney, just get help.
I respect your video but I kinda disagree for 3 of the five carachteres xd Like, for me Barney is the worst because he's a predator who attack poor girl just to get laid, he don't even care about all the damage he's doing to people aroung him with that, yes he's a good friend but not a good person. Ted is bad but not so worse because he's just for me a poor boy who try but can't be happy. Lily is just trying her best to be happy and make his friend happy, you can see that the girl she made ted broke up with are all bad girls for him, like it wasn't a good idea to let ted with these girls, and yeah she left Marshall because for her she was feeling uncaged in her actual life
I agree with you, but I have to say one thing. as much as Barney is a fictionalized character whose moves are sometime used only for comic purposes, I believe Ted is this way too. For example, the video showing Ted sending a letter to a complete stranger met on the subway, that's a comic situation that clearly is more linked to what the "character" Ted would do instead of what an actual person would. That's not something he's proud of, he doesn't think of this like a great romantic jeasture, because as a matter of fact, he doesn't tell this to his children, that is shown because it came out with the whole "no questions asked" thing, but he doesn't think of this as something that should be done, like what he did with Stella trying to convince her to go out with him. That's something desperate. I think Barney developed a lot through the course of what's my favorite TV show, and that's why I think we should rank 2 different Barney's, as he developed a lot. Let's not forget what happened in 3x05, when we see that when he literally JUST MET Marshall, he didn't even know his name, and still he was trying to convince him to cheat on his wife-to-be. I mean, that not only is incorrect, but it's also just a challenge that he was doing just so he could be called their sex moves teacher or "wingman" I mean... that's rough, what a jackass..
Ah yes, let's place Robin beneeth the "adorkable mysogynist" character that drugs and manipulates women into sleeping with him (who's gonna tell him what that's called 💀), makes casual jokes about his sexual harassment charges and the fact he goes after teenagers as soon as they are no longer legally considered children and just some other nice touches like selling a woman, that get zero pushback by the other characters or the overall narrative (except for the occasional aww lol that's so disgusting and quirky). But, you know, Robin was acting a bit too comedically jealous of her old love interest that one time and, according to this dude "sometimes acts crazy", so she's certainly gotta be the worse one.
I respect your opinion and I agree that Marshall is the best, but I strongly disagree on Barney. Barney is DEFINITELY the worst. He gaslit robin for WEEKS with that Patrice scheme, knowing it would drive her CRAZY and then expected her to marry him in return (and because its a show and she clearly had daddy issues, she said yes). When they broke up somewhere in the middle seasons, he immediately started bragging about hooking up with other girls right in front of her, completely oblivious that it was hurting her so badly. and let's not forget that his hobby is unemotional, no-strings-attached sex, but instantly became a huge hypocrite when he had a problem with Quinn being a stripper. even if you believe his sleazy "ill say and do anything to get laid" personality shouldn't be a factor in his Suck rating, you can't deny that he treated his girlfriends (especially Robin) like crap. obviously, Barney's backstory with his childhood, and other moments that give him a heart and show his kindness make him look better, but every other main character has those in the show as well. it kind of bothers me how barney is just forgiven for everything while you can't look past a few things the other characters do. it's not an even comparison.
Really well done and I pretty much completely agree with everything - the only thing I’d like to mention is 2/3 of the clips used to highlight Ted’s horrible suckage are the St. Patty’s Day episode - while I completely agree that he sucks in a lot of ways, he admittedly tells everyone right upfront that he was an asshole during that episode so even he’s able to admit he sucks there
I would disagree with Ted and Barney. Both suck about the same. Barney Slept with Robin told Ted on his 30th birthday, told Ted about his engagement on the night the GNB tower opened. Manipulated Robin into marrying him. Then everything he’s done to sleep with women Trauma isn’t an excuse for bad behaviour. Both suck pretty bad.
HIMYM is my favorite show ever. Genuinely forgot how many times I’ve rewatched it. I can quote damn near any line in all 9 seasons. Even still, I saw the title of this and immediately agreed lmao
Barney sold a woman! Left another woman out in the woods & stole her car. He slept with his best friends ex & wanted Ted to ditch his own bday party to go to Vegas. He slept with a woman in a vacant home, told her he loved her, left her there & she got arrested for trespassing. He's literally the worst. Still my favorite character & hilarious!! But yes he's the worst
THANK YOU for realizing that Lily is the worst. It's all the more infuriating because she never EVER gets called out on her shit, except in the episode where Ted calls her a Grinch. And even there Ted has to apologize to her at the end. But engineering all of Ted's breakups for something like a decade was some straight up supervillain shit. Plus there's the whole calling off the engagement thing, the running up the massive credit card debt due to her shipping addiction thing, the falling ass backwards into a high paying art job despite crapping out in San Francisco thing, and the making Marshall turn down his judgeship so she can take a job in Italy thing. She does ALL of this heinous shit, but somehow the show never recognizes how horrible she's being, probably because she was based on one of the creator's wives. UGH she drives me nuts when I rewatch the show now.
To be honest, when it comes to Barney I'm on the fence, because it's true that the story comes from Ted's perspective and if he was that bad of a person, Robin wouldn't date him and Lily and her moral compass would have gotten rid of him ages ago. Also please note that Ted still wanted Robin at the time he was telling the story, so he's probably acting salty towards Barney for being the one to make her walk down the aisle when he couldn't.
Besides being a hopeless romantic, how is Ted bad? This reminds me of the trend of hating Daniel in the karate kid and liking Johnny. Yeah, I know HIMYM references this. People are setting out to hate people to be cool or something. You're stitching together random scenes of people putting down Ted but he has the MOST emotional resilience and heart of any of the main cast. You seem like you're playing massive favorites. Which is okay, but trying to analyze it in an objective manner doesn't seem like it's working.
@@samuelsandwich803glad i'm not the only one, many seem to agree that Ted is worse and that he doesn't care about his friends and that he sucks but there are inconsistencies with that. He had times of being jerky but so did everyone else, he could possibly be narcissistic but overall he tries to do the right thing and be supportive of his peers and people he barely knows, even people who wronged him. A lot say that he was a fake nice guy but to me I think he was actually a nice guy who loved his friends and wanted to find the right girl for him.
ok look I loved Barney's development and stuff but HOW, the actual HECK, is he listed as the 2nd LEAST BAD person in the show??? Yes Ted and Lily have manipulative tendencies worth calling out, but Barney legitimately admits to, engages in, and encourages assaulting women via manipulation, lies, trickery, getting them drunk, etc, etc. He's an actual textbook certified r*pist, but somehow Ted, Robin, and Lily are all WORSE than him on this meter???? XD Does not compute :P
Ted is completely self-centered and disrespectful torwards all of his friends and the women he is dating. He is definitely the worse. Barney though, even though being a loyal friend that looks out for the one’s close to him (like giving marshall a job), is still a despicable human being for lying to literally hundreds of women and luring them into sex on false pretenses and using them like objects instead of human beings just to satisfy his own ego. Robin is kinda fucked up but I think she never hurt as many people as severe as Ted, Barney or Lily did, so my ranking from best to worse would be Marshall, Robin, Lily, Barney, Ted.
I don't think you did Ted justice here. You gave examples of him being a bad guy but those are specific examples of him being an ass to create the big lesson in the end that he does ultimately learn from. He is incredibly supportive and caring of his friends (like that Christmas episode where everyone gives up on doing the right thing until Ted corrects them). He definitely has unrealistic expectations from relationships but you cannot blame him for girls like Zoey, Jeannette, and Stella. There's countless instances of Ted going above and beyond to be the better person, and he is really not just a "nice guy". Some instances like that letter to the pharmacy girl was clearly a joke (imo) which if you can overlook for Barney I don't see why you cannot overlook for Ted. I really like the video, but I think you missed the mark on Teddy Westside. Edit: About his character never changing throughout the series I also disagree, as we see him get increasingly disillusioned with the idea of "the one", e.g. Star Wars Trilogy episode, and Time Travellers. And even more prominent is the affect of Barney on Ted, who essentially switch characters with each other at one point in the show.
I really feel like he oversold barney and just made shit for ted. Although ted sucks for real. Barney also deserves to be the worst if ted actually is the worst
I think I read somewhere something very true about Ted. That Ted sucks because he knows what he wants. He wants the specific girl, that house in suburbs, building with his name, 2 kids etc. So that makes him a boring character. Because he doesnt back off from it and change. Everybody else did some major changes. Ted didnt, he stayed the same.
I remember noticing that on my second viewing as well. First time I binged the show I was 19, and didn’t find much of a problem with most characters, but at 25, goddamn, are there a lot of problems with those people. And no, Marshall taking the job without telling Lilly wasn’t even bad, considering he only did so because she buried them in debt and he had to do things he didn’t want to for her.
Marshall knows not telling Lily was bad, there's the episode with daphne where he struggles to convince her that what he did was the right decision and then when talking to Lily, the best he can come up with is, you OWE me this. Even his friends say he was in the wrong for it?
Barney is literally the worst person on the show. Yes Ted is a jerk but no one and I mean no one is as bad as Barney. Marshall’s and lily rankings was spot on 🤝
That‘s how Sitcoms work. The main characters usually are written as deeply flawed people, that‘s what makes it compelling. Those are only kinda realistic people, at the end they are caricatures of real life persons who live in New York.
How can you put Robin in the middle. She is literally the worst by the end. I love her early on but she gets worse and worse. She is a cheater and her treatment of Patrice was the most annoying part in all of the series.
Really interesting analysis! One thing I wanted to add - I do agree that Lily has a lot of bad qualities which are overlooked, but I actually don’t think her breaking off the engagement is one of them. As hard as it was on Marshall, it seems to me that she really needed that space; if she had gone through with the wedding, she may have ended up regretting it, resulting in a far worse and messier situation. She should have been more honest with Marshall about what she was going through, but the fact that he didn’t want to let her go makes me understand why that wasn’t feasible. I think sometimes the characters get flack for reasonable things that cause pain to other characters, and this is a big example. IRL, if you had two friends getting married, and one was starting to seriously freak out (not in a simple cold feet way), would you really judge them for taking a break? I actually had this kind of situation play out in my life; the friend who wanted to leave actually told me “everyone hates Lily” as justification for why she was staying in an engagement that wasn’t a good fit. Really changed my understanding of that part of the show.
I totally agree with this. Causing another person pain while doing something reasonable and healthy for yourself doesn't mean you suck. Sometimes what is best for you will hurt someone else. There's lots of ways to try to avoid causing the other person pain, like open honest communication (which Lily importantly doesn't do in this instance), and I think if you care about the relationship it's on you to try, but really sometimes you just gotta do what is right for you. It doesn't help anyone to stay quiet about your needs and desires and make yourself miserable. That just leads to resentment.
I think people rag on Lily too much just because of what happened with her and Marshall, probably because everybody loves Marshall. She’s a little crazy and has issues but they’re similar to Robin’s issues IMO, so she only kinda sucks.
True, Marshall was the only truely good person. Barney was fucked up but at least he was good to the ones he loved. Ted and Robin were selfish but did it mostly out of love. And Lilly is the worst. Everything she does or say is manipulative.
When I saw the thumbnail, it was cut off before the, "except Marshall" and I came here prepared to be VERY upset when I realized what was up and yea, you are totally right
i agree w this completely, what also completely pissed me off was the lilly owning over 10 credit cards situation and putting not only herself, but marshall as well into huge debt again, without telling marshall
It's funny, I saw the thumbnail for this video in my Recommended section, and the title was cut off. I read "everyone in HIMYM kinda sucks" and it was cut off, and I thought, "Eh, except Mar-" and then saw the parenthetical when I hovered my mouse over the thumbnail. Haha, needless to say, I agreed with you from the start!
I wish people would stop talking about the "unreliable narrator" shit as if its canon. Its a theory and really the only way to absolve Barney, who is the worst human being ever. It's also used to make Ted look worse because people just want that

As a group they seem like the best people to have as friends. But, when you look at them individually, their flaws are way more apparent.
Lol trueeeeee
Except for Marshal, he's a cool and nice dude. He has flaws but he doesn't suck. I can't recall him doing anything bad other than accepting the job without talking about it with his wife. While the rest of the friend group, yh I can recall alot of shitty things they've done.

I like how when Barney cheats we can forgive him but Robin gets treated worse
@Begeru he cheated?
I always liked the theory that Barney is actually a good guy but Ted (being an unreliable narrator) makes him seem bad so he seems better
if you think about it, since this is Ted's perspective we don't really know what's real and what's not. Notice how Tracy is like perfect with no flaws, that's how Ted saw her. He probably did exagerate Barney's character because he really doesn't seem like a real person at all tbh.
It's obvious even with Ted's bias that he and Barney are not even that different, Barney just owns being an asshole while Ted is in complete denial.
Ted really does suck, but if you can make the argument that Barney isn't that bad because he's a plot device, can't you do the same for Ted?
Way too nice on Barney . He’s my favorite character but he’s objectively the worst, morally.

You also forgot that we saw Barney's change at the flashback to the McLarance before Ted's wedding.
So has a unhealthy view on sex
Robin. Wanted her fathers approval. So she tried to pursue Barney when he stopped showing interest.
Ted just sucks.
Damn the gang and the daddy issues! (Except Marshall) Also completely agree that ted just sucks
@@megha9789 he had lowkey daddy issues too, the funeral arc and all
yes!! in Lily's case too, because of her deadbeat dad she always tried to be present and have control over her friend's problems like a way of showing affection
Lol Ted is super naive with no self awareness and has special snowflake syndrome from being coddled and sheltered by his parents. Basically a narcissist
@@kage6613 This is why Ted doesn't get as much sympathy from me. The others had terrible childhoods and were very stunted in different ways.
People love to hate Lily and Ted then turn around and praise Barney. It's stupid.
I maybe need to rewatch, but all his "plays" were based on make himself look better in stupid ways, like disguise himself as a prince or a rich man, not to feed alcohol to girls, also with the "18", i recall he had a obsession with woman not passing 30, not a fixation for 18
THANK YOU!!!!!! as a woman, i hate so much guys like him, i know is a show, but in real life the guys like him are the worst
Every time there's some kind of mistake in the writing, this is what I tell myself haha
There's two I can think of off the top of my head and they're really little things, like Scooter's real name or the contradiction in episodes over whether or not Ted called Trudy after the Pineapple Incident.
Probably you would paint him on a bad light when telling the story
That being said. Barney is not the worst, he just consistantly and consistently sucks so we get used to his basic suckage, but whenever he does something good we praise him to no end. IMO a couple of good deed don't change a man. If he was a real person Barney would be a home wrecker and a sucky person to be involved with
I do agree Ted is an entitled nice guy, teaching the lesson of "a no it's the way to a yes" puts him into borderline rapey psycho mentality.

Very interesting!!
That wouldn't make sense at all because, just like their kids, most people believe Barney to had this amazing change of character.
So it's not true when Barney bad but it's true when Barney good?
Also, why would he want their kids to hate uncle Barney?
If you watch a bit of how I met you father . You will see Barney act like he always did
Even if some of his worst actions are exaggerated, he still lies to multiple women for sex on a daily basis. That still makes him the worst one by default.
@@leonardorodriguez9121also the kids didn't seem surprise when hearing Barney was a sex addict in the past. Which means they already knew.

Haha when he left that one woman in the middle of nowhere and took her car
He also tricked a woman into giving him a blowjob. A woman who wasn't aware that she was giving him a blowjob. And when he goes to Marshall after having sex with Robin, he says that he did something bad and that he had sex with Robin and Marshall asks, as if this were an even remotely normal question, whether "Robin knew that he'd had sex with her". I don't remember the exact details, but Marshall thinks it's possible that Barney "had sex" with Robin without her knowledge.
@Skarbie Well I didn't remember those things!
- Cheats on Kevin (the nicest guy ever, well behind Marshall of course)
- Not really her fault per se but dating Barney after dating Ted is kinda meh
Ted -> Too egotistical about is love life, loses sight of other important stuff, and sometimes uses love to justify ridiculous actions by his part.
Gotta think that if he kinda sounds like a douche as the narrator, imagine what really happened from a neutral perspective.
Barney -> An overall very shitty person objectively speaking, treats women as objects and overall has very borderline prison inducing beliefs
-> sexual predator
-> Cheats on Nora
Lily -> She's the worst.
-Doesn't tell Marshall about her credit card debt until strictly necessary
- Manipulates Ted's love life
- Bets on friend's life for her own entertainment (Marshall is in on this too)
- Thinks she's the ultimate advisor, so therefore she has the right to change things in her friend group that don´t go her way.
- Selfishly goes to San Francisco, although she could follow her dream in NY anyway, she fails and therefore comes back, she ultimately doubted her marriage with Marshall enough to find and excuse to run away from it.
Robin: Acts a bit crazy sometimes; middle sucks.
Ted: Self-sabotaging, too much of a hopeless romantic and can be a douche often; sucks a lot
Barney: Literally lies to woman everyday to make them sleep with him, ruins multiples people’s birthday, stag dos, etc for his own benefit, manipulates Robin to accept his engagement, has secret cameras in his friends houses, stole all of Ted’s stuff once, hits on his friends wife regularly and, oh, he mentioned he sold a woman once; eh, he’s not too bad!?
Well, u can basically say that about every character
robin rejects ted like 7 times and still has the guts to tell lily at the end that she should have been the one to end up with ted even tho she never wanted kids. And she tries to talk ted out off marying stella just because she still liked ted even tho she rejects him later when ted tells her that he loves her. I dont hate robin btw. i think she should be in the middle off the suck meter, only marshall and barney suck less than her. (lily is so fucking selfish)
@@Reiskamans Robin only wanted Ted when someone else wanted him.
@@michaelgierusz5754 exactly
Marshall is wayyy too good for Lily. He never should have taken her back.
@@barney4053 just because he grew the most, doesn’t mean he isn’t the worst? Everyone always favours barney, however he has done so much shit
Exactly, when i was younger, i didn't like Barney so much but when i grew up, i realized how misogynistic he is
Ohhh plss
I'll second that "oh plsss"
Cry about it. Barney is the funniest and most interesting character
@@johnathankorkie4984 thats exactly what i’m saying.
I think the worst thing Marshall ever did was to represent Zoey on the Arcadian thing. If he'd succeeded his best friends would've lost their jobs.
i think the worst flaw in marshall is that he’s got some serious internalised misogyny. like how he totally supports barney and ted all the time when they’re going for a girl and craves to be their wingman (even though he knows, because he knows the law, the girls are drunk and therefore cannot give consent) but as soon as robin sleeps with the naked man he completely slut shames her. not only that but his whole behaviour in the episode on “names for babies” where the only reason he doesn’t want to have a girl is the fact that they’re being sexualised. he doesn’t realise how fucked up his way of thinking of women is and how often he says really hurtful and misogynistic things and can be thankful that the two women in his friend group are his wife and a girl that was raised as a boy and therefore isn’t as much hurt by the stuff he says. putting marshall at the top and least sucky person only works due to the male perception of the series.
Marshall was an asshole to Barney numerous times:
Like whole slapping shit
or
When he was trying to get as much money as possible from Barney for the painting
Barney on the other hand made a lot for Marshal
Etc
You’re way too kind on Barney. Yes he has good character growth but he constantly lies, cheats, manipulates. His CONSTANT misogyny honestly makes it hard for me to watch the show. I just roll my eyes every time. He once made a joke about sexual assault charges. I definitely think he should be at the bottom along with Ted. Lily might be manipulative but she never joked about sexual assault. She sucks medium. And robin isn’t that bad at all. She didn’t do that much wrong.
Joking about sexual assault is not as bad as being manipulative ffs.
There has also been multiple times she has joked about making out with robin when robin wasnt into it…
Robin cheated once, she left most of her relationships for her career only to regret her decisions on multiple occasions, tried to meddle in her exes relationships/lives, AND she DOESN'T LIKE FIELD OF DREAMS.
Robin constantly berates Patrice
Lily, apart from the misogyny, does all the things you blame Barney of doing, plus SHE STEALS, which is worse than doing some jokes.
I remember Barney saying something along the lines of... "The only time you wait a month to sleep with a girl is if she's 17 years and 11 months old." Sounds like a great guy.
he literally admits he abandons women on the woods
Was that something to make him look bad?

Underrated comment
Me too! I wondered how Lily can be worse than Ted ...
I know ted has bad sides in his personality, but with barney we can't call ted the worst
barney canonically sold a girl, and you're still saying he's better than Lily aNd Ted?

Marshall is the soul of the group. The morality goes out the window when hes not there.
(Commented just to help this video reach 300 comments, my fingers couldn't help it)
This is what happens when you watch a series too many times.
I have only watched it once and I agree with him
Barney planned his proposal to Robin on Ted’s building opening night…..biggest douch bag move ever!
Selling a person might be worse. Just a tad. (Pun intended)
Yeah also he’s an actual rapist so that’s like, pretty not great 😬
Coming up with the idea of a suck-meter is very Barney-like and creating a real graphic would make Marshall so proud
Big agree especially on the Dad stuff. Good intentions but he should respect Lily's choice of being no contact with her dad.
Remember, Marshal told Robin to keep a hairdryer to win his bet :)
Ted didn't sabotage every relationship and I'd say deep down he wanted Robin the whole show UNTIL he met Tracy.
It took Tracy for him to give up on Robin.
Exactly, I mean that's literally the narrative of the entire show.
And as soon as she's out of the picture, he's back to focusing on Robin again.
Ted gave up on Robin before Tracy , it's very evident on the morning episode
@@BullyMaguireTheAbsolute he was moving to Chicago because he knew he couldn't.
He also knew she was getting married and he wouldn't make a move on her like Barney did to him.
@@JoybuzzerX That's quite wrong , Ted deciding to move to Chicago and the reason being Robin WAS true untill his revelation he had at the sun rise which showed him truly letting go of her as they portray her as a balloon and the deleted scene cements that when she asked "a what if " about them and Ted states that he stopped thinking of the what ifs and that he's truly happy
Wasn't sure where to reach out to you, but I just finished doing a reaction to this video. Would it be okay with you if I'd post it on my channel?
Yes of course, please do! I'm excited to watch and looking forward to see where we agree or disagree
The creators confirmed that they only wrote this part in because Josh Radnor is highly allergic to dogs and they had to have EMS on standby for any scene with them
the worst thing about Robin is how mean she is to Patrice for no reason
nobody asKED YOU STACEEEEEY !!
@@FunStuff-zn2yb you do realize that recurring gag isn't funny right?? Shut up
Barney has rape offences that he doesn't care about.
Just gonna leave you with that...
I think Barney is a bad person but a good character. Like it’s fiction, sometimes the worst people are the most entertaining to watch.
exactly, ted is a bad person and a bad character
_"You just don't f*** with other people's dogs."_ - brianTFbell (10/2021)
Unless you're like really allergic to them
I think Barney had the best character development throughout 9 seasons.
Only to be ruined by the last moment.
@@barney4053 Doesn’t mean what he did is justifiable just because he “changed” in the later seasons. Stop letting barney off the hook
Lily, you cant control everything, treasure Marshall
And Barney, just get help.
I respect your video but I kinda disagree for 3 of the five carachteres xd
Like, for me Barney is the worst because he's a predator who attack poor girl just to get laid, he don't even care about all the damage he's doing to people aroung him with that, yes he's a good friend but not a good person.
Ted is bad but not so worse because he's just for me a poor boy who try but can't be happy.
Lily is just trying her best to be happy and make his friend happy, you can see that the girl she made ted broke up with are all bad girls for him, like it wasn't a good idea to let ted with these girls, and yeah she left Marshall because for her she was feeling uncaged in her actual life
The justification for Barney doesn't make sense.
For real, this video should be studied for its use of boy math.
16:11 So when can I open my eyes? 😢
Teds the worst kind of person, he thinks he's a "nice guy" but behaves like a monster towards the woman in his life, hes also weirdly narcissistic
Barney is far far worse😂
Not everything about Marshall is perfect, yes. Like the slapping. My god, the way he brutalized Barney. But he did kind of deserve it.
Well they made a bet and barney came up with the idea so I wouldn't say Marshall did anything wrong
i am pretty sure Barney sold a woman
Yeah he is definitely the worst
15:00 Lilly has her moments, but she really is a "grinch" though, "little bit" as Lilly would say
Believe me, "Grinch" is the perfect word to describe Lily Aldrin.
When can I open my eyes? I didn't think the imagination thing would last the whole video
Lilly is the worst, especially in the last season when she didn't allow Marshall to take the job.
Nah lily was definitely a grinch
Neil Patrick Harris making Barney even remotely likable is a feat of acting that absolutely earned him those Emmys.
Agreed sir

Can I open my eyes again now?
0:50 in you forget to remind your audience to open their eyes to watch your TH-cam video 😂
Skip to 3:21 where the rankings start
I agree
Sounds about right. I would list them in the same order as you did.
That would be my order too!
For me it's; Marshall, Robin, Ted, Lily, Barney but I agree with all your points
Correction: you do not hear the theme song to HIMYM at the beginning of the episodes.
And also, Teddy Westside going so long without marrying the mother? That's not Ted from series 1...
@@johnsnow04 that's a good way to analyse a character, not a person tho.
@@johnsnow04 Marshall was the one who didn't do major changes. Ted changed quite a bit
Lol your background!!! Great video btw
@@lauren8367 He did nothing wrong. Lilly forced him into a situation, and he found a way to fix it when she did nothing about it.
@@alexman378 I think we're talking about different instances, my bad. Thought this was about the judgeship not GNB, sorry!
The close-up to your face while cringeing must be my new favorite meme
Barney is literally the worst person on the show. Yes Ted is a jerk but no one and I mean no one is as bad as Barney.
Marshall’s and lily rankings was spot on 🤝
That‘s how Sitcoms work. The main characters usually are written as deeply flawed people, that‘s what makes it compelling.
Those are only kinda realistic people, at the end they are caricatures of real life persons who live in New York.
Everybody in life kinda sucks, tho
marshall has always been my favourite character!
How can you put Robin in the middle. She is literally the worst by the end. I love her early on but she gets worse and worse. She is a cheater and her treatment of Patrice was the most annoying part in all of the series.
If all the characters didn’t have flaws, the plot would never be driven forward.
The way you introduced the flashback was scarily accurate lmaoo
I think people rag on Lily too much just because of what happened with her and Marshall, probably because everybody loves Marshall. She’s a little crazy and has issues but they’re similar to Robin’s issues IMO, so she only kinda sucks.
True, Marshall was the only truely good person. Barney was fucked up but at least he was good to the ones he loved. Ted and Robin were selfish but did it mostly out of love. And Lilly is the worst. Everything she does or say is manipulative.
What about the time that Lilly & Marshal had a bet how long Ted & Robins relationship would last while Lilly actively tryied to break them up.
