Bobcats are elusive and hard to spot. Chances are, most people will not be able to spot a wild bobcat because they mostly come out at night, their fur helps to camouflage them, and they prefer to stay away from humans.

*Edit* I was using the term "big cats" loosely in this video for sizing. However, as a viewer pointed out, bobcats are not classified scientifically as a big cat.

    • @rypatmackrock
      @rypatmackrock 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

As an animal and predator connoisseur myself, I consider the true big cats start with the ones of the Panthera genius that are lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars with snow leopards, being unique in that category; and cheetahs and mountain lions fall behind that, because of their sheer size. The Panthera cat family are distinguished by their iconic size, and ability to roar; while mountain lions roar meow, and are capable of purring.
There’s an interesting video that lists and categorizes most of the world’s wildcats from the Panthera family, to the smaller African and European wildcats that pet cats are related to.

I grew up in the coastal mountains of southern California and had many pets. One day I saw an injured bobcat by the side of the road and removed my jacket, wrapped the cat up and brought him home. my dad worked in a hospital emergency room and loved animals. He dampened a clean rag in ether and held it near the bobcats face until it relaxed then carefully felt for broken bones or internal injuries and found nothing obvious. he wrapped the chest and stomach gently with gaze and taped it and put it in our workshop with a dish of water and raw fish. We fed it raw chicken or fish twice a day for 6 weeks and anestetised it again to remove the wrap and left the workshop door open. He left but in the wintertime he would return for free food and seemed to have a mild arthritus in one rear leg; Sometimes he would let us pet him but other times he would growl if we approached. We always respected his wishes and he came around for many years and got along with our cats.

They sure are elusive creatures. In my 66 years, i have only seen one bobcat in the wild. It was more than 40 years ago and he was in the driveway of my dad's old saw mill in Goshen, Massachusetts. He was a big healthy looking cat. We gazed into each others eyes for a bit, and eventually he went on his way across the driveway, leaped over a stone wall and off into the woods. I would bet the farm that they have seen me in the woods many more times than i have seen them. I would love to see another one. One of these days, maybe i will put up a few trail cams for the fun of it.

Had one for 11 years in small apartment in central Russia.
Found him in woods while was skiing thinking it was an old abandoned cat with chopped tail, no teeth and eye infection 😢
Just a couple of weeks later realized that “old” cat was not dying, but growing instead. His beautiful eyes opened , teeth grew, and dark “polka dots “ appeared on his stomach.
The entire apartment building lived my giant cat Konstantine for almost a decade. (Even though he never used steps to go outside to use bathroom- he was jumping from the 3rd floor window making sure he was not going to land on someone’s head😂)
Never was aggressive to any humans, played with dogs and cars, but hunted squirrels, rats and mouse.
Well, I had to feed him with raw meat at least once a day. He loved water melons also😂

That’s an awesome story! It was kind of you take it in. I love when I hear about good encounters like this. Of course I wouldn’t recommend that anyone take in a wild animal that doesn’t have experience with them, but when you hear positive examples it can be heartwarming ❤️

I live in a wooded area of rural Central Massachusetts. One morning at the edge of the wood near my house was a longer tailed cat. A week later in the same area was another cat with a bobbed tail. Most likely a Bobcat pair. What surprised me the most was it's 'stare'. A bit unnerving. I now warily exit my house these days in the early dark mornings. Thanks for this video.

Populations are highest in the southwest, as high as 20 per square mile. Southern cats are smaller than northern cats, only 10 to 20 pounds. Northern cats can grow to 40 pounds. Mice, rats, rabbits are in danger from bobcats, not people. They pose no threat to people. Bobcats will do their best to avoid humans. We are not a prey species. If you see one, just enjoy watching it.

Dunno what the distrobution of bob cats are.......but many moons ago, as a child, I went on cycling / camping holiday in France and we were camping in some random field......got up earlyish - around 6 am and I saw large stocky cat......around the size and build of a bobcat. Bobcats are native to the Americas and are pretty much all over North America and Mexico. Since you saw one in France, it's likely you saw a Eurasian or Iberian Lynx, bigger relatives of the Bobcat.

      ••• Genus: Herpailurus (Jaguarundi Lineage)
      •••• Species: Herpailurus yagouaroundi (Jaguarundi)
•• Subtribe: Pantherina (Greater Big Cats)
••• Genus: Panthera (Leopard and Lion Lineage)
      •••• Species: Panthera pardus (Leopard)
      •••• Species: Panthera leo (Lion)
