What causes apraxia? [Apraxia of speech causes & other types of apraxia]

  • Childhood apraxia of speech, sometimes called developmental apraxia of speech, is most often something that children are born with. It's not caused by something you did or didn't do as a parent; it's not your fault! Apraxia can also be caused by serious life threatening brain injuries; this type of acquired apraxia is much less common.
    And apraxia of speech isn't the only kind of apraxia. When working with young children, speech therapists will often recommend physical and occupational therapy to be sure children are fully supported.

    I am pretty sure early childhood neglect can be a cause aswell, I mean how are you suppost to learn talking if there is noone around you to learn it from

      Hello. Childhood apraxia of speech like I'm talking about in these videos is not caused by neglect and parents are by NO means at fault. Apraxia can be very hard on families because the treatment tends to be long and gradual, so I just want families who are working hard to know they're doing a great job!
      And yes, it is very sad but in some rare cases, neglect can significantly hinder a child's development. But that's different from what I'm talking about in these videos.
