  • When it comes to hair loss, it’s time to think beyond cosmetic appearances. Based on scientific research as well as personal experiences as a hairdresser diagnosed with breast cancer aged 36, Nicola discusses self-esteem, wellbeing, confidence, mental health and quality of life as she uncovers the hidden and far-reaching impacts of hair loss. Her talk reveals emotional, psychological and societal dimensions, and the deep connection between hair and identity. From the stigma that surrounds hair loss to the innovative solutions that offer hope and healing, Nicola explores the journey of those experiencing hair loss and the ways in which society can be more compassionate and supportive. Nicola describes her job as ‘a hairdresser for one day a week and the rest of the week she tries to change the world for people with cancer and hair loss’. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    I seen this talk live and it was really moving. I think the title is wrong as the title comes up on the screen if you continue to watch the video: Beyond Appearances- the deeper connection between identity and hair loss.
    It’s a shame that the incorrect title is overshadowing the power of this message.
    Amazing work and thank you for raising awareness and supporting people ❤

    we should learn to love ourselves without feeling the need to change for others, that's our true identity and dignity, nor we should fear inevitable changes, losing life because of hairs is egoism, I'm bald and my mom is doing chemioterapy, we laughed about me being ready to support her with the same haircut, I can't imagine someone choosing hair over life experiences, friends and lovers, that's a suicide out of lucidity in my eyes, and makes the topic presented here extremely important to save lifes unexpectedly for me.

    Whether it's hair loss, a disfigurement, or a disability, the way society reacts to another human with any one of these issues could make all the difference to how a person feels.. Sadly, most people don't care, most schools, hospitals, work places, social places don't put in the work and understanding to make those of who struggle, to make their acceptance a little bit easier. It's not rocket science, yet society as a whole remains stuck and people with these issues continue to feel bad and hide. What this woman is doing is amazing and incredibly helpful and beneficial for both the person and society.

    A wonderfully moving talk, Nicola, made more so by the intense emotion in your voice. I can understand those who lose their being affected psychologically, while in the same way I can understand those who say "It's just hair". People don't attach the same importance to the same things. You pronounced the word "femininity" in relation to hair. Femininity is one of the main qualities I look for in a woman, but for me the symbol "par excellence" of femininity are heeled shoes, and I can see that in this field you are the stiletto heels equivalent of a world champion or an Olympic gold medallist. But whatever, the fact is that you are a stunningly beautiful woman worthy of being crowned Miss World or Miss Universe - and not every woman can have that piece of luck. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

    • @treeforged9097
      @treeforged9097 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The fact that you shave your head instead of just letting it be is plenty of evidence that you are vain yourself. You care about what other people think, if you didn't you would not be wasting your time shaving your head. You protest to much, its the person who accuses someone of being weak that is most often the weakest.
