  • Western political thought is the study of political ideas and theories that have developed in the Western world. It is a vast and complex field, but some of the key themes that have been explored include the nature of the state, the relationship between the individual and the state, and the principles of justice and equality.
Lecture 1 Western Political Thought | PSIR | Shubhra Ranjan
Some of the most important thinkers in Western political thought include:
Plato (428-348 BCE): Plato was a Greek philosopher who founded the Academy in Athens, one of the first institutions of higher learning in the Western world. His ideas about the ideal state and the nature of knowledge have had a profound influence on Western thought.
Aristotle (384-322 BCE): Aristotle was a Greek philosopher who was a student of Plato. He was a prolific writer on a wide range of topics, including politics, ethics, and logic. His ideas about the natural world and the human condition have been influential in many fields, including political science.
Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679): Hobbes was an English philosopher who is considered one of the founders of modern political thought. His book Leviathan (1651) is a classic work of political philosophy that explores the nature of the state and the relationship between the individual and the state.
John Locke (1632-1704): Locke was an English philosopher who is considered one of the most important figures in the development of liberalism. His ideas about natural rights, limited government, and the separation of powers have had a profound impact on the development of Western political thought.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778): Rousseau was a Swiss philosopher who is considered one of the most important figures of the Enlightenment. His ideas about the social contract, the general will, and the natural goodness of man have been influential in many fields, including political science, sociology, and psychology.
Karl Marx (1818-1883): Marx was a German philosopher, economist, and sociologist who is considered one of the most influential thinkers of the 19th century. His ideas about class struggle, the labor theory of value, and the communist revolution have had a profound impact on the development of political thought and social movements around the world.
Western political thought is a rich and complex field that has been shaped by the ideas of many different thinkers. It is a field that is constantly evolving, and it continues to be a source of debate and discussion today.

00:02 Understanding the basics of Western political thought

    Good Evening madam,
According to me with view of a nation, "Politics is considering yourself and your interests at superior priority, without letting anyone affect it, at any point of time, and working continuously in aligning the path (rather by making people work for the acquirement of *POWER* at the world level, or, making policies & forming alliances to lead internationally) and, meet the end goals.
    *power in very broader perspective

This is the very first time I'll disagree with Shubhra ma'am...it's Dr. Ambedkar that actually deserves the title of Feminist ahead of his times & not M. K Gandhi...Gandhi's identity as a feminist is questionable on both his personal & social life that was full of controversies...No doubt he was a man of great thought but I'll never agree on giving him the title of Feminist it's Babasaheb who actually deserves this title more than him including Rajarammohan Roy, B. G Tilak etc
