It's a cultural thing to have your parents live with you when you get older. Americans just don't get it, that's why you have so many nursing homes in North America.
***** I am indifferent towards nursing homes (I don't see them as neither negative nor positive), but I think the main distinction between putting your parents in someone else's care vs. putting your children in someone else's care is that for the latter, you really have no choice if work prevents you from looking after your children yourself. But for your parents-- they took care of you your whole life, brought you into their home and nurtured you; it just doesn't seem right to disallow them from living in your home, and instead, force them to live and be cared for by strangers. Babies don't mind being coddled by strangers because they're babies-- they make friends easily. But at an older age, having a stranger coddle you and cater to you gives off a different vibe. Of course, there are cases where the elderly have medical issues or don't have anyone to take them in, so they have no choice but to live alone or in a nursing home. I guess it differs on a case-by-case basis.
Work wasnt a burden to my parents when they raised me, so its not gonna be a burden for me when I care of them. I always knew I was going to care for them. I make sure my life plans include it. just like you do when planning to have a baby.

There is NOWAY I'm letting my parents grow old in a retirement home. They gave me life, fed me and took care of me. I cant believe people can just leave their parents alone like that. (I can understand for broken family lods, kids that never grew up with parents etc) but if you grew up and were raised by them really. Do your part.
Jermaine Jackson If your parents have certain diseases or illnesses, it sometimes is best to have them in a nursing home where they can get the proper medical care. Plus, having an ill parent live with you or having a nurse regularly visit can be incredibly pricey and the average person probably doesn't have the money.

You have some people who may be the only child and have to work all day and it's too risky to leave them home alone so they put them in a nursing home and see them multiple times a week. You also have some people who know they can't properly care for their parent(s) so they put them with people who can. I will also say I disagree with putting them there just so you can have your space because like you said they spent their life taking care of you. I'm only 17 but I told my mom whenever I buy my house she will have the basement(I'll fix it up so it's like its own apartment)

She made friends there and played cards. I think if she moved in with one of her kids she would've been more isolated and she would've hated it. I think people from other cultures misunderstand the concept of a nursing home. You don't leave your parents alone. You can still visit them. While they get specialised care and make friends with people their age.

Parents aren't a burden to put in a home once they're no longer able. My parents gave life to me, fed me, loved me and sacrificed for me. My dad worked 6 days a week and 3 nights on top of that, just to ensure my sister and I would always have everything we wanted. When I was sick and ill my parents would stay up all night by my side and do everything in their power to help me. So when the time comes and their bodies slow down I will have both my parents live with me and do everything I can do, to ensure they have a comfortable old age. The people who work in these homes are just staff, sure some will be great, but some wont be and at the end of the day who else is going to love your parents and care for them better than you? They're not a burden, they're your parents and the reason you are everything you are today.

I like having my personal space and I Like my privacy so I love living by myself. I would only let my parents live with me if they were really sick and is unable to take care of themselves then I will let them come live with me and I will take care of them. I totaly get you. I'm seeing someone for my anxiety and she noticed my mom and I feed off of eachothers fears. She's hypocondriac and has generalised anxiety so she tries to transfer it to me and it plays with my nervs and subsequently affects my mariage and kids. Problems with being too much like mommy hehe.

The only way I would live with my mom after moving out is if she gets old and can no longer care for herself. I'm not with that nursing home life(ironically my mom works at a nursing home). My mom is African and they believe no matter how old you get your mom still controls you. If I'm paying my own bills I wanna do what I want without running to mother.
No offence but I can't imagine living with my parents when I'm newly married because that's the time I'm gonna be getting it on with my man so when my mom is like right there its not that romantic. Also, they are completely capable of living by themselves, they can come over whenever they want but you don't have to live with us. You have each other and that's enough!

I'm Italian and Pakistani and both sides are very family orientated, everything is about family. There is no way my parents would want me to move out or live on my own unless I get married, which I'm okay with. I don't think I could ever let my mum or dad just grow old and sick on their own in some hospital or nursing home without me being there.

I would love to say I will never put my mom in a nursing home and I hope I never have to, but if 24 hour care is necessary for some reason idk if I would be able to afford to hire the help required. Hopefully my mom lives a long and healthy life and I won't have to worry about any of that.
I watch my dad and his brothers and sisters sick my grandpa in a nursing home, and that made me feel sad. We (my dads kids) would be the only ones to go and visit him. The look on his face when it was time for us to go, would always break my heart. I vowed then that I would never put my dad I. a home, and that since I am the oldest of the kids, I would be the one to take care of him. If anything happened that he needed care.
I'd want my mom to live close to me but we can't stay in the same house. I need my space and she needs hers but I'd love to have her near me, especially for Sunday dinners and cookouts. Like Tamar said, biscuits on fleek!
My uncle lives in Guangzhou with his Chinese wife and their 4 children, and his wife's parents live with them. In China it's custom to have all generations living under one roof, though it's slowly dying out now.
I am 26 an my parents live with my fiance, 4yr old daughter and myself❤ theyre both disabled and need a lot of help with things around the house and some finances and i wouldnt want it any other way. It was amazing after i had ny daughter i had so much help!!! And even now! They say it takes a village to raise a kid, well im thankful everyday for my village and everything they do for my little family
See that's the difference, when loni said that tamar's mother knows her space meaning she doesn't over step boundaries. I wouldn't mind my momma living with me, or at least next door because she asks me before she does things to my personal stuff in the house, and on top of that she's polite and respectful to my husband. My MIL on the other hand, over steps her boundaries and disrespects me in my own house. She thinks she can do so, because I'm younger than her and I must only respect her through all the mean behavior and all. Like no, I couldn't have her living with me. So it depends on your parents characters and personalities.

I hate to talk poorly of someone’s business, but in my Med program we had to visit a lot of nursing homes. That’s not the care I want for my parents. I’d move them in with me, same with my mother in law. All of the parents would be allowed at my house anytime. I would actually insist on it if they needed it. I’m all for adult daycare if they need some socializing in a safe place but full time nursing home… NOPE!

My grandmother moved in with my aunt for 1 years and moved out into an assistant living complex. She said she miss have her own space. Which is the case some times with older people in the USA

i moved to missouri from texas to live by my mom who moved to be closer to family and i love dropping by her house whenever and living close. i do miss texas though i wish we could move back together :(

I am a Pacific Islander. And we dont believe In putting our parents in a nursing home. Majority of us that is. It just doesnt look right to us.

I like having my personal space and I Like my privacy so I love living by myself. I would only let my parents live with me if they were really sick and is unable to take care of themselves then I will let them come live with me and I will take care of them. Other than that I like living by myself without my parents around. And BTW, I really do not understand why Loni feels the need to lie and make up stories so much. I guess that's the comedienne in her.

Me and my mother are TOO much alike to live next door each other or under the same roof!! Ok? She would ride my nerves too bad. Our relationship works best over the phone and periodic visits. Keeping in mind, that I am a mama's girl, but that's what works well for us.

I totaly get you. I'm seeing someone for my anxiety and she noticed my mom and I feed off of eachothers fears. She's hypocondriac and has generalised anxiety so she tries to transfer it to me and it plays with my nervs and subsequently affects my mariage and kids. Problems with being too much like mommy hehe.

The only way I would live with my mom after moving out is if she gets old and can no longer care for herself. I'm not with that nursing home life(ironically my mom works at a nursing home). My mom is African and they believe no matter how old you get your mom still controls you. If I'm paying my own bills I wanna do what I want without running to mother.

Also, they are completely capable of living by themselves, they can come over whenever they want but you don't have to live with us. You have each other and that's enough!

I'm Italian and Pakistani and both sides are very family orientated, everything is about family. There is no way my parents would want me to move out or live on my own unless I get married, which I'm okay with. I don't think I could ever let my mum or dad just grow old and sick on their own in some hospital or nursing home without me being there.

I would love to say I will never put my mom in a nursing home and I hope I never have to, but if 24 hour care is necessary for some reason idk if I would be able to afford to hire the help required. Hopefully my mom lives a long and healthy life and I won't have to worry about any of that.
I watch my dad and his brothers and sisters sick my grandpa in a nursing home, and that made me feel sad. We (my dads kids) would be the only ones to go and visit him. The look on his face when it was time for us to go, would always break my heart. I vowed then that I would never put my dad I. a home, and that since I am the oldest of the kids, I would be the one to take care of him. If anything happened that he needed care.
I'd want my mom to live close to me but we can't stay in the same house. I need my space and she needs hers but I'd love to have her near me, especially for Sunday dinners and cookouts. Like Tamar said, biscuits on fleek!
My uncle lives in Guangzhou with his Chinese wife and their 4 children, and his wife's parents live with them. In China it's custom to have all generations living under one roof, though it's slowly dying out now.

I am 26 an my parents live with my fiance, 4yr old daughter and myself❤ theyre both disabled and need a lot of help with things around the house and some finances and i wouldnt want it any other way. It was amazing after i had ny daughter i had so much help!!! And even now! They say it takes a village to raise a kid, well im thankful everyday for my village and everything they do for my little family

See that's the difference, when loni said that tamar's mother knows her space meaning she doesn't over step boundaries. I wouldn't mind my momma living with me, or at least next door because she asks me before she does things to my personal stuff in the house, and on top of that she's polite and respectful to my husband. My MIL on the other hand, over steps her boundaries and disrespects me in my own house. She thinks she can do so, because I'm younger than her and I must only respect her through all the mean behavior and all. Like no, I couldn't have her living with me. So it depends on your parents characters and personalities.
In an African home, you live with your parents even after you get married, at least I don't have to make an appointment to see my mother

I hate to talk poorly of someone’s business, but in my Med program we had to visit a lot of nursing homes. That’s not the care I want for my parents. I’d move them in with me, same with my mother in law. All of the parents would be allowed at my house anytime. I would actually insist on it if they needed it. I’m all for adult daycare if they need some socializing in a safe place but full time nursing home… NOPE!
My parents said they don’t want to live with us. They don’t want us to “parent” them.

My grandmother moved in with my aunt for 1 years and moved out into an assistant living complex. She said she miss have her own space. Which is the case some times with older people in the USA
