If you are showing ever-changing scenery whilst walking then I would probably just set it to full area focus and have quite a wide depth of field. Otherwise you will be constantly having to move the camera and put the focal point into a box or zone to hit focus. Hope that helps.

Steven, your tests are amazing and unique. I would like to use the GH6 in AF and I would like to use it to shoot everything, without ever taking it off. I shoot V-Log, 4K, (ALL-I 600Mbps), 10bit, 4:2:2, 50p and I'd like to ask 2 questions please: 1) I put the level on AFC. I would like to use AF in everyday life. It annoys me when he occasionally stutters to seek focus. How would you configure Sensitivity and Speed? 2) When I go to Menu/AF Mode and use "Full Area", why do I have to use the focus handle like when I use "1 Area"? Thanks for your advice.
Thanks again, really appreciate you saying that. 1. If you are finding the focus too sensitive you can turn down the speed and sensitivity a little. I would also recommend using a zone or spot over full area focus if you have a set subject that you are shooting. Remember you can also switch on human detection which will help when people are involved. 2. Full area focus is essentially telling the camera to just focus on what it thinks is the subject. You can override it at any time as you would in 1 Area. But 1 Area specifically will only focus on things in that specific area by default. Hopefully, I understood your questions. I have been trying to put together some AF tutorials which I will hopefully upload soon.
Steve, off the top of your head I am wondering if you have an idea of what lenses work best with auto focus. Do faster lenses work better or wide works better. Just curious if there is a list of characteristics that would make a certain lens more focusable. I know the Geek Tech guy mention the 12 to 35 *which I don't own is great for AF
Hi, personally I find the lenses I have that work best with the AF are the ones that received the latest lens firmware updates last March . I have part done a video on this. I don't have all the lenses but my most reliable ones are the Leica 12-60mm, 100-300 mkii and the 35-100mm mkii. My rule of thumb for AF reliability is simply to use official Panasonic lenses with no adapters. It tends to be that the newer the lens, the better the AF, even if just marginally. A lot of it is down to how you set the camera as well. A brand new lens can still be terrible for autofocus if you set it incorrectly. I am in the process of releasing the AF videos I have done. Many users are experencing same problem specially with 10 25mm lens. Is this something to be concerned about? Thanks for the video again!
Hey, it's not the camera, it's the lens unfortunately, I have seen a few threads about it in the past pre-gh6 - www.mu-43.com/threads/panasonic-10-25mm-f1-7-autofocus-noise.109146/ If you are picking up the sound in your video just grab yourself a shotgun mic and position it up away from the lens. If you can get one with a shock mount then all the better as it will reduce any vibration noise. Panasonic actually do their own shotgun mic where you can change the sound direction. No worries, glad you found it useful 👍 Hope that helps.
No problem, it was a bit of an oversight on my part. If you are in MF, you can hit 'AF ON' and it will do a quick single focus for you assuming you are on a lens that supports auto-focus. More info on that feature here 👉 th-cam.com/video/FTnMiVQlyA8/w-d-xo.html

Hey, I am guessing from what you have said your lens is the culprit here. So you need to locate the focus switch or clutch on the lens to switch it in to AF. Failing that you may have the camera in a mode that doesn't support AF like VFR mode. Hope that helps.
I'm not understanding why when I set the dial to C it doesn't continuously focus? I still have to press the AF ON button to make it focus... Also, another issue I've noticed, I have turned off the "shutter button/record" mode and it STILL starts recording when I press it!!

Hey, I have the Ronin SC and I tend to switch between 1area+ and zone AF as well using the manual focus wheel on the gimbal depending on the situation. I want to do an in-depth autofocus tutorial but just haven't had the time recently unfortunately.
So basically with video, there's only MF and Continuous focus (without changing other menu settings)? I like how it works for photos, but with videos I also want to be able to use AFS like I could on my G85 and other cameras.
I mean in MF you can use the AF button on the back or the one on the screen to spot focus. So you technically can have AFS but it just comes under the MF mode.
@@stevelitton In my case I use a remote for the shutter, so it wouldn't work. I did a project yesterday and the workaround I used was to have to turn Continuous AF to Off in the menu. Otherwise it wouldn't work with the remote, and when it did it would keep re-focusing.
That is something I haven't tried unfortunately so I can't really be of much help i'm afraid. Might be worth seeing if you can get anything out of their tech support team.
I still have the same problem with the autofocus of the GH5M2 or GH6: the focus is perfect when going from the foreground to the background but inverts the camera continues to seek focus towards a 3rd plane? instead of coming back to the foreground instantly... it takes a moment to come back to the foreground. is there a solution ?

When I do this on my GH6, it doesn't focus immediately. I also have to tap the AF icon in the bottom corner. That's one step too many. Does my preferred approach no longer work with the GH6 or do I have to change something in the settings? Thank you in advance for the answer.
No problem, I am really happy to hear that! I think that the new 'AF ON' button on the back of the camera and the 'AF' button on the screen has now replaced that previous long touch to focus functionality. Unless somebody knows of a setting I don't but I will let you know if I come across something that would make that work. You can always suggest it to Panasonic and they may add the feature back in, it's certainly worth bringing it to their attention. @@stevelitton you're the best. I'm a bit of a noob and didn't realize the lens ring were slid down which activates manual focus on the camera. I slid it back up and AFS is there again. I reached out bcecause I know you are generally responsive to your subscribers. Thank you so much.
@@humbleprogress1226 No problem at all. Glad you got it working, it's a learning curve. Enjoy your camera 👍
I don’t understand, at 60 fps and 120 fps and a variable frame rate at the same time, automatic autofocus (AFC) does not turn on and does not work?
If you are in PAL, the highest you can go with autofocus in 4k is 100fps.
@@stevelitton It's not autofocus, it's frame rate. But why does autofocus not work when I write 60 and 120 fps, but at the same time I immediately translate them into 30 fps in the camera?
@@lnuponom2678 Oh yeah I forgot you wanted to use variable frame rate at the same time. That will only work with AF when using the HFR mode available. Most VFR modes tend to not have audio and autofocus available.
When I record a video using Autofocus, I get the buzz of the autofoucus constantly trying to focus. It stops when I lock on somethinng but starts again as I change the focus. Is this normal?? Does not happen on MF. I use a mount adapter for Canon lenses.
Is that using a Metabones or Viltrox Speed Booster? They are not really great for trying to use continuous focus for video. You will be better off using manual focus for adapted lenses.
@@stevelitton Thanks for your quick answer. Yes it´s an adapter for EF / EFS lenses to M4/3. Do you reckon that might be causing this issue? Here is a short video to show you what it is. th-cam.com/video/zlHAl4079Pg/w-d-xo.html
And here is a longer one where you can hear when I lock the focus and its stops. th-cam.com/video/_pDO_297G44/w-d-xo.html I dunno if I shall contact Panasonic for this?
Sorry these messages ended up in the moderation queue because they had links in. That buzzing clicking sound is not something I have ever heard but the focus sound is like my old 50mm f1.8 Canon which is not good at all for continuous autofocus. But it was never really made for that. I would recommend either trying a speed booster or checking out some native MFT glass. MFT glass will be much better for continuous auto focus though.
@@stevelitton Thanks so much, it was the 50mm 1.8 Canon lens indeed! LOL great ears! I have a speed booster which is supposed to support autofocus, I will go back to the shop and check what´s wrong, as it does that with any lens. I would like to be able to use my Canon lenses with the GH6 ... anyway I was also planning to get a Samyang Video lens for it, something to equal a 35mm lens. Do you have any experience with those lenses?
Is it possible to enlarge focus area in c mode , have focus peaking in constant focus mode or have constant focus mode in manual focus mode? Seems c mode needs a babysitter. Struggling w 1.7 and 2.8 constant A apeture lenses . 35-100 and 10-25 and 25-50 grainy bokeh noise in low light If makes any since . Is ther a digital zoom in body ?Thanks
This video should give you what you need for the focus peaking th-cam.com/video/YFuxbsH5YO0/w-d-xo.html and you can't do any kind of digital crop in-camera but you could do a sensor crop using this feature th-cam.com/video/NpqaZwzGAjQ/w-d-xo.html If you are getting lots of noise in your low lights consider manually setting or limiting the iso if you aren't already. hope that helps!
@@stevelitton Thank You
Hi steven I tried recording a video of my kids ranging between 2 and 6 feet away from them playing, however the camera kept focusing on the background. what am I doing wrong?
Hi, did you turn on the human detect option in the autofocus settings? That should stop that from happening but unless you specifically set one of them to be in focus it may focus back and forth from each child if they are running around.
@@stevelitton Thank you for the help, I will try that!
@@sixtyninemangler No problem, that should improve it, you can only use that feature up to 60fps I believe, so if the option is not there just step your frame rate down a bit.
Shooting in MF, you can push that AF ON button, it will get you in focus faster if you’re going from near to far. It could autofocus on what you want to shoot or get you close enough that you can quickly focus on it with the ring. I’m horrible at explaining things, sorry.
No I understand what you mean. That's useful to know, thanks for sharing!
Buy its only good for non moving objects. It wont work well against moving objects
That was as clear as mud
I'm sorry to hear you didn't find it helpful. If there is anything you are specifically struggling with, leave a comment and I will try to help you out.
