Wood Turned Snowflake Sphere Christmas Ornament

- This year's Christmas ornament project is a walnut and maple sphere with a snowflake pattern at the top and the bottom. The pattern runs through the volume of the sphere. I made the pattern by repeatedly cutting and gluing pieces of walnut and maple to make a snowflake. I then generated two segmented halves to this sphere which I hollowed out. Next, I glued the two halves together and turned the resulting cylinder into a sphere. I really like how the straight lines of this segmented snowflake wrapped themselves around the curve of the sphere and make a new pattern.

Don't feel bad Pete. I'm lost too on this. As Frank would cut, glue and repeat, I can see how any pattern would evolve. But, to know that ahead of time baffles me. He just works at a different level than me for sure.

Christmas ornament, for the past few years I've been more excited about seeing Frank, than the man in the red suit. it's lashing rain and just completely bleak out at the moment here in Ireland, but this just made my day, thanks Frank and thanks to your family for letting you out in the workshop for so long.

Draw your design out on graph paper. Drawing it double the size needed will help with accuracy when measuring the angles. Or, you could just attack it with mathematics. Or even a combination of both.

For future reference, if you want to see how a flat pattern will look on a sphere, it's fairly easy to do in sketchup. Just draw a sphere, draw the pattern on a plane where the center matches the sphere's center, extrude the patter into and past the sphere, intersect faces with selection, then delete everything outside of the sphere; this will draw the projection of the pattern onto the sphere, and you'll know what it looks like beforehand.
Xander Zoolander this was my one talent in design school lol. everyone was using a different 3D software that made it difficult to do the pattern extrusion thing you were talking about. meanwhile me in sketchup...the only 3D software i know
