    Back in 1963 my friend bought a Model A from an old lady. He had seen a for sale sign on it and had asked her how much she wanted. She said to make an offer. She handed him the keys and he jumped in to start it. out of sight he yanked the gearshift lever up and back. It hung at a crazy angle and he showed her it wouldn't go into gear and then offered $100. She was shocked that it was broken but went for the deal. He told me this the next day when he drove it over to my house to brag about his "bargain". I told him what an ass#%&* he was and lost all respect for him. I mention this because this video brought this memory back to me.

Doing quite a bit of fixin' on the coupe', a bit more than I thought I would have to do but I think she's worth it. I am almost finished with what I know about so now it's get her out and about and see how she does. I am a kinda worried about the manifold, I think it's warped. I just put in new gaskets but it looks like it isn't seated properly, I just don't want to buy a new one yet so we'll see if she "blows a gasket." 🤐Blessings

    Okay Clint. I watched that Steve Mitchell video and I see what you mean. There's a subtle difference in the bend at the bottom of the lever. But that bend is covered by the rubber boot so it's no wonder that I missed it at first. And I certainly learned a few things from watching Steve's video. For one thing, I always thought the reason why my A would tend to pop out of second gear on a long hill was because of a worn cluster gear. If it's because of worn parts in the shifter tower, that would be a heck of a lot easier to rebuild than changing the cluster gear, and probably less expensive.
    The rare gearshift knob which I have is called a mushroom knob since it sort of resembles a mushroom. As I recall, it was only used on early '30 As. Good to hear that you've spent some time north of the border and know something about Canadian made Model As. My car actually came from Alberta before I bought it locally. In '64, I still needed a lot of help from my mother to afford the $300 I paid for it. To my old man, it was just junk.
    If I had your email address, maybe we could correspond more that way.

      Hi Jim, I spent about 40 years in Canada. I was a Principal dancer wtih the National Ballet of Canadia, and later a teacher in Alberta. My daught lives in Alberta. Now that you mention it I seem to remember seeing one of those mushroom knobs at one point in my travels, thanks for bring it back to memory. I remember the prices of Model A's in the past and wish I had bought every one I found but being a dancer I had to travel all over and move so many time I had to part with them. I have alway been able to fine one at some point after a move but you never forget the little jem you left behind.

    Now you've got me wondering, Clint, about that slight bend you mentioned in a '30-'31 shifter lever. I only know that from my reference material such as my own early '30 Coupe, which I've owned since '64, it's still a straight lever, at least on Canadian made As. I also have an original Canadian owner's manual for my A (not that it came with the car) and the shift lever looks straight. I even have a judging standards book (not that I claim to have the latest edition or give a hoot about having my car judged) and it doesn't say anything about a difference in the '30-'31 shift lever. As for the gas tank, I don't know about it being a little lower for '30-'31 but I do believe Ford enlarged it a bit from a 10 gallon tank to an 11 gallon tank. So that would be one reason why the shift lever would be a little closer to the tank. But it was still straight according to my info.
    One thing I do know for sure, there was an earlier style shift lever knob which I have on my A instead of the round ball type. I'd have to check my reference material as to when it was used but I believe it's only for early '30 As as I recall.

    • @clintonrothwell5709
      @clintonrothwell5709  ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Jim, Yes there is actually a difference. I am going to show the difference in my next video most likely tomorrow, but in the meantime you can check out this video on TH-cam ( th-cam.com/video/bp2HPOYzn1M/w-d-xo.html ) " How to rebuild Ford Model A shift tower with Steve Mitchell" where the gentelman shows the two shifter levers.
      I didn't know there was a different shifter knob, I sure would like to check that out. My first Coupe' was when I lived in Nanton, Alberta ... there is a short video of BonBon on my channel, you can see in the cab shot that the shifter has a bend at the very bottom where it goes into the tower. Does your lever have that bend? She was a Canadian built car, gota love those Robertson screws. I used them in Frankie when I was installing the wood. Man! I am impressed that you have owned your Coupe' since 1964, I think that is fantastic! good for you my friend. Thank so much for your post, blessings.

      Hi Rick, I am all stock. I don't believe I can make Henry's cars any better than he did. If I do change anything it would be something that could be put back in minutes. I plan to put an oil filter on DD because I will be driving her quite alot and it will keep the oil cleaner. I have an alternator but not sure if I will use it. Thanks for the post, blessings.

    How much the top speed?

    • @clintonrothwell5709
      @clintonrothwell5709  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think one can get at least 60 out of a Model A but not a good idea to keep that speed for long periods of time. 30 to 45 is where most Model A's like to be driven. There are things one can do to the car to make them go faster but a stock Model A is as above.

    I don't understand why they built a car for only two people, is it for style or economy?

    • @clintonrothwell5709
      @clintonrothwell5709  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, It is my understanding that the coupe' was produced for the professional person such as a doctors and the like. It is less expensive to build than a four door which would require more material and time. Single folks don't always want a big car which cost more to buy and run so a smaller light car would do the trick. When I was a younge man I drove sports cars. It wasn't until I worked in real estate I bought my first four door. Now as I am in my twilight years my wife and I have two door cars with a back seat that one can only fit a munchkin from the Wizard of Oz. Lighter car and more economical, well kinda, they are V8's? 🤣😂🤣

    I think these cars had an automatic type transmission?

    • @clintonrothwell5709
      @clintonrothwell5709  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there ... The Model A's were produced with three speed forward and one reverse transmission and no synchromesh. The Model T has a planetary transmission which is the beginning of an automatic transmission. it also had planetary gears in the stearing.

      Well, I lost over 40 lbs and now I can. When I was heavier it was a lot more difficult because the steering wheel was up against my belly and trying to put my foot on the brake while in first gear was a bit of a challenge lol🤣🤣😂 Now I have no problem so I guess one could say ... "A really good weight loss program is, get a Model A Ford"

    Nice car, except she's painted in the wrong colors; refer to MAFCA (Model A Ford Club of America) MODEL A FORD PAINT & FINISH GUIDE. I don't know why SO MANY Model A CAR owners INSIST on painting their cars in colors which were only used on Model A, AA and AAA TRUCKS. Wrong SOURCES, I guess..
    Note- 1930 Model A Standard & Sport Coupes (45-B, 50-B) were only painted in the following colors:
    Andalusite Blue Lower Body/Black Upper Body and Mouldings with French Gray Pinstripes (until August 1930, after which the Pinstripes were applied in Aurora Red,
    Lombard Blue Lower Body/Black Upper Body and Mouldings (which replaced Andalusite Blue in September of 1930) with Hessian Blue Pinstripes,
    Kewanee Green Lower Body/Elkpointe Green Upper Body and Mouldings with Apple Green Pinstripes,
    Copra Drab Lower Body/Chicle Drab Upper Body and Mouldings with Straw Pin Stipes (the Straw Pinstripes were dropped in November 1930),
    Chicle Drab Lower Body/Copra Drab Upper Body and Mouldings with Straw Pinstripes (see above),
    Thorne Brown Lower Body/Thorne Brown Upper Body and Mouldings with Tacoma Cream Pinstripes,
    Black Lower Body/Black Upper Body and Mouldings with Vermillion Pinstripes until September 1930,
    Black Lower Body/Black Upper Body and Mouldings with Apple Green Pinstripes in October of 1930...
    ALL FENDERS, Frames, Wheels and Running Gear for ALL Model A Car & Truck models were painted BLACK, PERIOD. However, the Wheels could be painted in the matching color(s) of the Pinstripes if the customer so desired as an "extra cost option", AT THE DEALERS' paint shops.
    Deluxe Model A Coupe (45-B) had their Wheels painted in the matching Pinstripe color AT the FACTORY. Deluxe Model A Coupes (45-B) also had two additional colors to choose from, being Brewster Green Lower Body/Black Upper Body and Mouldings (available October 1930) with Apple Green Pinstripes, and Ford Maroon Lower Body/Black Upper Body and Mouldings with Vermillion Pinstripes. Neither of the Blue colors or Thorne Brown were available on the 1930 Model A Deluxe Coupes during the 1930 model-run. Maybe I'm nit-picking, but THAT'S THE WAY IT REALLY WAS...

      Hi there, Thank you for the information I am sure many people will find it most interesting. I guess there are a lot of people who love the Model A and want to own and drive one but have no desire to show the car or have it judged and have a favorite color that they want to put on their favorite antique car. I didn't paint my coupe' I bought it and at first I was not sure if I would enjoy the color but as I have owned "DD" I am really starting to like the appearance. I guess it boils down to "to each his own" ... blessings
