    Samora’s story is an inspiration to us all!! I finished my undergrad with a 2.5 cumulative GPA. My Postbacc GPA was a 3.3 and my Graduate GPA was a 3.89! My acceptance was a blessing from God! Her story is a testament to never give up on your dream!

    This is such an inspirational story! MY GPA was an embarrassingly abysmal 1.68 by the end of my first semester of college (Stony Brook University 88'). I was on academic probation. However, after transferring schools, taking a BUNCH of classes, and being patient, my GPA FINALLY got up to a 3.16 (BS in Biology from UDC in 94'). Of course it took 6 years. But hey, the good Lord let me become a PA. Thanks again Adanna, for yet another wonderful video! I REALLY enjoy "meeting " your classmates. I hope you get 3,000 subscribers before the end of 2017!

    • @B00BaDaF00
      @B00BaDaF00 6 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      My overall GPA was a 2.6 however, some schools look at your last 30 units. For me, those 30 units were still at a 2.9, which still didn't meet the 3.0 requirement. Fortunately for me, my program required us to also find a Principal Investigator to take us into their lab. I got rejected by many because of my GPA. Luckily, one professor saw me for more than my GPA and GRE scores and took me in. A few weeks later, I was offered admissions. I believe my PI fought for me, which I am extremely grateful for.

    • @mariajuanesta3319
      @mariajuanesta3319 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @veronicasarabia3821 I did poor in high school because it was about being told what to do and how to think and being bombarded with 100's of hours of miniscule tasks that meant nothing. Where college it was all on you to perform and it was all relevant information. Then you were tested to see what you absorbed. High School is a waste, it holds back those with ambition and potential and hurts those who need more help. College only allows to to excel if you're ready.
      College raised my GPA because I was allowed to think, ask questions and the info was accessible the way it is in the "real world".

    I wish I saw this earlier, my major was pre-med and my advisor too laughed when I told her I wanted to go to pharmacy school. And told me to do psychology instead. Other students told me to ignore her but I thought “hey this is her job she knows best” and I knew I couldn’t have my GPA drop any lower. Took a year off to re-evaluate my life and gain the proper drive that I needed to REALLY accomplish the overall goal. I’m taking the first steps back but I know I will get there ✊🏽 my parents are doubting me every step of the way but I’m doing this for me and my son.

    Parents who never had the opportunity to pursue a higher education don't understand how much private and home life affect children pursuing a degree, one, because you have to live in whatever environment it is that's being created, secondly making the environment better is out of that child's control and so they only learn to get by and just survive each day rather competing with versions of them self to evolve as a person. It just sucks all in all and through and through.
    Attending uni is already enough pressure, now imagine attending uni having depression, battling with self- worth and failing every course that can drive any young adult borderline crazy.

    This video gave me more motivation. My parents are divorced and I was living under my moms roof. Grew up in an abusive environment and left the house not knowing I suffered from CPTSD. once my grades flunked after college, sought out a therapist, she diagnosed me and now I had to take a year and a half off from college. I just got accepted again and am an aspiring NP. Thank you for sharing your story!:)

    Insane that Samora worked at Starbucks too! I’m working my way up to become a Shift Manager right now. I’m currently attending college but I’m dealing with mental abuse. My family is also very religious, they control me, physically abuse me, tell me I’m worthless. I’ve always been a 1.0 - 2.0 gpa student since middle school. I passed my Bio 131 with an A but I literally had to walk away from my family. I came back because they always manage to make me feel guilty about my decisions. I’m in bio 233 with 2 jobs working from 4:00am - 9:00pm. I have a 3 hours gap that I use to attend school. Having so many things going is affecting my grades right now. But watching this inspired me, I will be a fucking Physical Therapist with a fuckinggg doctoral degree!!! Stay strong people!

    OMG. This hits close to home. I started undergrad in 2009 and it was a disaster. I was on academic probation twice and suspended. I basically just stopped going to school in the middle of a semester in Fall 2012. I had 1.23 GPA at that point. I took some time off to work then ended up moving back in with my parents. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I enrolled in community college just to appease my parents and barely made it through that but got my A.S. degree. I had heard about PAs before but never really gave them much thought. I did some research and something clicked and I knew that this was what I wanted to do with my life. Currently I'm at a different 4-yr school with a 3.8 GPA and will be graduating next fall(on that 9 year Bachelors degree plan lbvs). I'm worried that PA schools will look at my old grades and go "oh hell no" so this story is very motivating for me. Keep them coming Adanna.

    • @samoracharles8055
      @samoracharles8055 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I know how you feel...but you got this. You are rocking that GPA and schools will take notice of that. Just make sure when you are ready to apply, you choose schools that clearly state that they take a holistic approach. To me, that means they will take the time to look at your application instead of dismissing you because of your cumulative GPA. I was told by one PA progam admin that although she noticed my low cumulative GPA when she was reviewing apps, she knew that she had to take a closer look at my app, because only a crazy person would apply with such a low GPA. And after looking she saw that I did well as an older student etc. Those are the programs that you need to spend your money applying to and there are quite a few out there. Good luck!

    • @AdannaThePA
      @AdannaThePA  6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      vettech10 schools will never just say no if you show progress. You have to make sure that your PS, HCE, and Shadowing hrs also reflect your dedication to succeeding in the healthcare field. look at schools that may take a more holistic approach to their acceptances and calculate you GPA for yourself, so that you know exactly where you stand over all. You will be fine, just stay focused and put in the work. It may not be easy but you'll thank yourself later when you're in PA school!

      Adanna The PA I apologize but what does PS mean? I have a BA in health care administration and once I've entered the work force I've realized this field didn't suit my personality. I'm going back to school to meet my pre req for PA school. However, my GPA is 2.84. I've had some personal and family issues during my undergrad. I have been doing really well on my classes I am in right now and have recently applied for a patient care technician position at my current employer. Please help!

Math was my stumbling block in college and I needed to pass that class to move ahead . It was hard . I definitely took a break . I was on academic probation , I took the class 5 or 6 times.. everyone thought I had a learning disability when it came to math but watching your story , has truly changed my mindset and I’m willing to continue . Not for others but for me . Thank you so much!

    This is so inspiring to me. I worked so hard last year to get the opportunity to interview for an occupational therapy program and got the offer. I have a 2.95 cgpa and was competing with people with CGPA of 3.8 -4.0 I was waitlisted. I felt stupid and inferior to the others I applied with. It took me abit to climb out of that depression and get the resolve to push harder and apply again next year. I stand to bring my CGPA up to a 3.0 and up my observation hours to improve my application. So many people doubt me now and tell me I'm wasting my time and need a plan B. In my mind there is never a plan B theres only Plan A. I'll never give up. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me

I share so many similarities with Samora and her story, and It is so amazing to see others overcoming some life obstacles and prevailing in the end! I went from an extremely embarrassing 1.0 GPA due to dealing with the death of all 3 of my grandparents within a 4 month's time span, to now being accepted into an Accelerated Bachelor's of Nursing program and hopefully will be completing this program near the top of my cohort. Moral of the story is: NEVER give up, and don't let past mistakes define you and hinder you from accomplishing your goals and one day living your dream life! I AM SOOo PROUD OF THIS WOMAN!!!!! I LOVE her story and everything she represents. God is truly with her even when her family left her side and her story is such a blessing especially for myself and others in similar situations. She is inspiring me to get back up after sooooo many failures and believe in myself! I wish nothing but continued success, blessings, prosperity, happiness, and all good things for her.

    ❤️ this post , it was an inspiration and appreciate the honesty about your family . I had a similar situation of my GPA going downhill from a 3.5 . So I took a semester off of school to get my mind together and deal with my family’s problem , multiple sudden deaths and how it all affected me . It takes true guts to do what’s best for you and developing you. 🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹

    You are truly an inspiration. I've shared this video with my two daughters who are now in college, one who had struggled as you had even though she was always very intelligent. And I as well, going back for another degree, this time in medicine and I know what it is to struggle. I had to fight the tears in hearing your story because many years ago I had similar struggles. It's a shame your family didn't understand how much they actually hurt you and caused what sounded to me - like trauma, which likely caused doubt in you and depression. I'm glad you had friends to assist you and that you never gave up. I wish you the best Samora, and you as well Adanna.

    Thank you everyone that shared their stories on their setbacks and overcoming them. I'm so inspired and have been debating trying school again. I'm extremely book smart, but that's not enough to succeed. I was a single mother with no help when I tried to go to school and just couldn't balance it all and my GPA dropped down to the 2's. I gave up on my dreams and just focused on my child. Now, my I'm married to a great man and he helps and supports me like I've never known. Lately, I've been thinking of going back and finishing school. I work at a huge hospital in N.Va in administration. You guys have motivated me. I'm going to take atleast one class this January. I have been in the same boat as Samora with failing out of undergrad and feeling like a failure and disappointment when everyone around me is happy and successful. I love this message of hope and that is what I'm going to take away from it. The past few years I have just been in a depressive rut, working in the restaurant industry and figuring out my life. I'm starting to get my life back together and this is definately the push I needed in the right direction.

    I’m Haitian and can totally relate to the strictness of parents. Although my parents wouldn’t go as far as disowning me, it was very stressful for me to tell my mother that I wanted to change my degree from a BS in psychology with the intentions to get my PhD in Neuropsychology to a BFA in Creative Writing. I had never been interested in science and had been a writer and reader from a very young age, but my mother, who is a pharmacist, had always tried to push me into the science field regardless of my obvious disinterest. Going against her wishes and doing what I wanted was extremely trying because like you I grew up in a closed environment, without an identity and always had my family, no one else.
    Now I’m in graduate school getting my MS in Publishing and although I don’t know quite yet what I want to do with it, I’ve been very happy with the path that I chose because I knew I’d be miserable if I had done what my mother wanted. Thank you for sharing your story!!!!! Your story is inspirational and I hope people listen to it and follow their dreams regardless of what anyone tells them 💜💜

And sometime I believe them but then you show us these documentaries that just give me all the fuel to my fire and everything I need to continue moving forward and find ways to raise my GPA and get into PA school whether it takes me 3 tried or 5. @AdannaThePA  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mariely De Leon you are absolutely welcome! Definitely don't listen to the nay-sayers. The thing is you are an individual, and the some of your individual application is what will get you into PA school, not your lone GPA. First off you 3.3 is enough to get your application looked at because you meet the minimum GPA requirements for many schools. The thing is what is the average of the others applying in your cycle, and what your other components show. Trust me someone with 6000 HCE hrs and a 3.0 GPA is going to warrant a look. Don't be discouraged, continue to work hard.

From using GPA calculators, I can see that even if I do really well in these last few classes, I won't make the 3.0. Have no direct patient care hours and not enough funds to start vocational school right after graduation... Girllllll that is my father! I can relate! My dad feels like his pride is being tested and I as an independent (some say stubborn), I don't really care for it at this point but I know it might just me later on but I know what I want and I am determined to get where I want to go and I don't plan on him stopping me.

    Wow! Amazing and inspirational story!
    Thank you Adana for bringing Samora on.
    Thank you very much Samora for sharing your trials and tribulations!
    Merci my Haitian Queen!
    I'm Haitian as well. I totally understand that stress that old school Haitian Parents can cause you especially if you are a woman. My son's aunt is Haitian and she is also old school and almost does not allow her late teenage daughters breath.
    I'm very happy for you.
    I hope you come back when you are done with PA school and share your experience with us.
    Thank you again.

    I'm so glad I found this video!
    I feel like I've been in school forever. I started college at 16, and I think that was really bad idea because I was young-- trying to figure out what I wanted to do and I was still discovering myself. The stereotype that I was born into is Nursing, but I knew that I didn't want to become a Nurse. So I kept on changing my major, took classes, gave up because I lacked interest or I feel like I wasn't learning much from my instructor. I left college for a couple of years to pursue a technical degree and worked in a clinic. So... this video gave me encouragement!

      Started college at 16 too and currently 19 applied to nursing schools got rejected from some and still waiting but if I get denied I have another school with a public health degree so might go to that. Only have 2 years left for college so do that and go to PA school

    I’ve recently decided that I want to go to PA school and my college process isn’t going anywhere near how I planned it but this video is really inspiring to me to keep going despite my setbacks. It’s crazy how much I relate to her down to not having an identity, and not knowing who I am

    Honestly so inspirational. Right now I’m going into my sophomore year with 2.6 after being on probation after my first semester freshman year. Instead of giving up my dream I am volunteering at a nearby hospital, getting involved on campus, and putting my grades first and hopefully I can apply for medical school on time.
