    Adanna, ,I am so very proud of you.
    I graduated from the Yale University School of Medicine PA Program in 1996. I was the only African American Student in my class. Now I'm on faculty of a PA program in NC. My personal mission has been to increase the numbers of minority students across the board. Thank you so much for putting this documentary together. All the best to all of you as you continue your studies.

      Saran Wright I concur. What people don't realize as far as minorities go, we as black people are the bottom of the barrel. Other races are taught to look down on us. I think he kind of touched on that without saying. Listen how the black students talk compared to the asian students.

    Peace be to you all! This is so beautiful! We talked about this issue at a CORE PA Leadership conference. That was 10 years ago! Things haven't changed statistically speaking!😣
    I'm so glad to see James Kim and see PA students I hadn't seen before! I'm so PROUD of all of you guys!

    • @AdannaThePA
      @AdannaThePA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Dr. O, that's pretty sad to hear that things haven't changed over the course of 10 year. I'm sure there has been some change but not enough to see a significant rise in the numbers. I just feel that there should be greater progress, but I have hope that with the age of social media that we live in, awareness and access to information of the profession, will make these numbers rise tremendously over the next ten years.

    • @maggmaxxx
      @maggmaxxx 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Dr. O and Adanna! When we think of how we learned about the PA profession, it becomes more clear as to why our numbers in this field are so low. i didn't grow up with insurance, so we didn't go to the hospital much. You've all heard the stories of how these PA candidates went into a hospital and were treated by a PA. That doesn't happen to our community as much and also because of our history with healthcare. The betrayal of the Tuskeegee project, Henrietta Lacks, CDC's autism/flu shot results on black children cover up. I will be working with my school to get out and educate more black teens and disadvantaged minorities about this field. Like the brother in this video, I too am the only one in my class of 70. This topic and video is necessary Adanna! I hope your voices will enlighten our community more about the other healthcare options beyond doc and nurse! Peace

      I'm following both of you on TH-cam. The past two years I was focused on going to Pharmacy school but lately I have been considering applying to PA school. I am a Black male and a pharmacy technician; plus I fall under the category of an older student. Do applicants with a pharmacy background get accepted to PA school?

    Thank you for this documentary. In my PA program, we had a class of 80 students which is larger than the average PA class. Out of those 80 students I was the only African American period and I found that hard to believe being that the program was located in NY City, the most diverse city in the word. I struggled with this throughout my program and I had difficulty in certain situations and really had nobody that I could talk to about my issues that could relate to what I was talking about.

    Thank you Adanna for creating this wonderful documentary! As a senior in high school, I've only known about doctors, nurses, medical assistants, pediatricians and nurse practitioners, etc. I've never heard of a Physician Assistant until my Microbiology/Infectious Diseases Teacher introduced it to me a couple months ago. Throughout high school, I was focused on becoming a Nurse, however I was shaken a bit and I became unsure. I was determined to work in the medical fields but I felt as if I wasn't as passionate as I thought I would be. I was doing my research on PAs and officially decided that I really want to be a PA. I'm so blessed to have encounter your documentary, it makes me so excited to see what God has in stored for me! Also shout out to James Kim as well, I enjoy his helpful videos.

    When it comes to being a minority in any career (and I did 20 years as a PA and is an African American female), I feel that "my credentials will speak for me." Even if there is racist attitudes, no one can take away your academic accolades and if so, you have something to fight with. I think the low minority rate is because of lack of exposure (folks just don't know about PAs). I became interested simply because I had heard of someone (an ex-coworker, white male) getting into PA school. I wanted to know more about it and I sought out the information. I have sat on a Physician Assistant selection board and I can tell you that a lot of the comments in this video are assumptions and not accurate. The biggest reason is "not many know about PAs." And, if a person have not had many doctor visits they may never had seen a PA. They have made the application process more difficult for all. But, I have allowed students interested in becoming a PA to "shadow me" during their holiday breaks to get the required hours needed to enter PA school (with permission of my employer, of course.)

    We definitely needed this for the culture...There is a lack of minorities in the field.. I want to chalk it up to lack of popularity among the youth, but I know it's more than that...

      yana212 You typically are discouraged from working during PA school and in general, most graduate programs. The material is dense, complex and you're expected to learn quickly. All your free time should be devoted to studying and resting up for learning.

    I felt the Latina girl. As a French speaker when I first came to the US people were making fun of my accent in college...how childish is that? That's why we need diversity because people are in that delusion cocoon that makes them think that we should all talk, look and act the same. Well done Adanna for bringing attention to this issue.

    There's minority within minorities. Somehow black people end up on the lower end even more. The brotha was being real about it. I have gone to an inner city school and a graduated from a suburban approximately white school. The opportunities offered in suburbia is tremendously greater that that of inner city school. I don't know if the black girl was trying to be pc or if shes in denial. I also get the vibe she's trying very hard to be accepted by non minorities, and was trying to distance herself from her "labels".

    As a senior staff nurse in the London, England looking to immigrate and train as a PA in the states this is quite shocking to me. In the UK to work alongside someone who isnt white is not a deal, it's not even really a conversation. We all work together. We go by role and work ethic, how we work together based on competencies and how well together.

      The U.S. has a deeper history of race related issues than most other countries.
      If you are a minority and plan to come to The States to pursue the PA career (or any career really) just be prepared for a completely different culture to navigate.

    The Black man PA said some truths that are very uncomfortable for others to hear but that are 100% true! None of the other speakers have the same insight about the difficulties POC face in this country. Btw, caucasian is not the right term 🤦🏾‍♀️ so much knowledge about medicine and so much ignorance about race and it’s not effects on people.

Maybe if the question was “what is it like for minorities trying to get into PA school?” There’s some sustenance and realness missing from this video, too refined, not real enough, too cute.
