Question: Who's 65, has a thyroid problem and never played Deadly Arts for N64? This guy... yeah, Deadly Arts and G.A.S.P. are the same game, just different names so I never knew one was the other. Oh well, the rest of the list holds up. :)

8:18 Bomberman 64 (Arcade Edition/2001) is the last N64 title released in Japan, and is a different game compared to an earlier N64 title with the same name due to the arcade style gameplay present. The 1997 Bomberman 64 game is called "Baku Bomberman" in Japan.

Remember Animal Crossing/Doubutsu no Mori? The series started as a Japan-only N64 game, and had three updated re-releases on the GameCube that added more activities, items, trees, fish and insects than its past editions. If you want a life simulation title for your N64, you should give Animal Crossing/Doubutsu no Mori a shot.

Great video, but there's one thing I want to correct you on:
Bomberman Hero was called Bomberman Hero: Save Princess Millian in Japan, and the Bomberman 64 we got was called Baku Bomberman (roughly "Explosive Bomberman"). Incidentally, The Second Attack was called Baku Bomberman 2 in Japan.

Rakuga Kids, Bangai-O, Last Legion UX, Sin and Punishment, and that Bomberman 64 game made me realize that I did not know my N64. It gave me a whole new perspective about the console. And I say they are a must play. If you can get a repro of Animal Crossing with English translation it is worth it. Good video. I think that the Rakuga is right up there with the best fighters on the system. Bangai-O is the best version IMO. Sin and Punishment the best shooter on the console.

This Bomberman is called Bomberman 64: Bonbāman Rokujūyon (Arcade Edition) and is Japan exclusive yes, but it is not Japan’s Bomberman hero. Bomberman 64 and Bomberman Hero both released in the US and Japan, and are the same in both regions. In Japan Bomberman 64: Bonbāman Rokujūyon is and Bomberman 64 and Bomberman Hero are three different games. Also GASP is Deadly Arts in the US.

Have a few of these (Irritating Stick, Bangai O, S&P). Europe got Rakuga Kids. Tetris64 is a JP only game that's also worth a look. Has an optional bio-sensor that clips to your ear - that mode matches the game speed to your pulse!! But the game is a solid 1-4P Tetris game without the sensor.

John knows his puroresu, name dropping Misawa and his Tiger Driver '91 like the average viewer would know what he's talking about. This video demonstrates one of the disadvantages of cartridges. Some of these games look like they probably would have been localized on the PS1. With the low cost of CDs publishers tended to have a "hey, why not?" attitude towards quirky Japanese games that normally would not have been localized. Irritating Stick and Bangai-Oh did get US releases on disc based platforms for example. The high price of cartridges meant that publishers were not going to take a risk on a niche N64 game.

Good video John. I'm curious as the why so many Japan only games still have American English writing. A couple of the games you showed were all in English, some were both and some not at all. I've noticed this on MJR and Kelsey videos too. If so many are already in English, why not send them over.

wrestling game. That NJPW Toukan Road
game looks a$$...if somebody is looking
to collect all Japanese n64 imports
I understand, but for me it wouldn’t
be worth the 50 dollars to import.

  • @TBustah
    @TBustah 4 ปีที่แล้ว

This is a video more people need to see.
The way I always put it is this: the N64 is either the best system in the world for imports or the worst system in the world for imports, depending on how you look at it. Like its predecessor, playing Japanese games on a North American N64 is as simple as removing the tabs (or using a cheat device as a pass-through). The problem is that unlike its predecessors, pretty much everything worth playing for the system was either released here or has too much Japanese text to really be playable if you don’t know the language. That’s the main reason why the only N64 import that was released on the Wii’s Virtual Console was “Sin and Punishment”.
So, anyway, it’s good to have a list of titles to look at. I’ve been wanting to get some import N64 games, but nothing really seemed worth it.

Dude, John, if you haven’t yet, check out Custom Robo V1’s English translation. I’m almost done with the game and it’s phenomenal, the gameplay is sick. It’s also become one of my favorite VS games to play with friends, too. The unlock progression is really satisfying, I’m always striving to unlock the next multiplayer levels and gear. I think the team that did the translation is currently working on V2, which they uploaded footage of recently.
