I'm from the area where Scott makes his amps outside of Charlotte NC. Scott was the first Rock Star in our town- he had a rack of gear in 84, was very skilled..... and he's only gotten better. He's a great man, and his amps crush. This sounded really great Leon. Thanks!
The Splawn Q-Rod is by far my favorite "modded Marshall" amp model in the AXE FX III. I pair it with a set of "Brit Oversized" cabs and it's heavenly! Great video!
This video along with Marco Fanton's recent fractal Q-Rod demo pushed me to try this model and boy, am I glad I did. It's now my main amp in the FM9 and FM3, along with the two friedman 4x12 dynacabs. Sounds massive yet super clear and dynamic all at the same time.
They still are actually imho compared to many other hot rodded Marshall builders. Ceriatone amps are the cheapest in terms of prices(not quality) but Splawn is clearly still affordable if you want a great custom hot rodded Marshall amp :)
I have a 2007 Quickrod 100 and it’s my favorite. I own way too many amps, they all have their own thing, but the Splawn is my go to 99% of the time. Build quality is incredible, price is unmatched and Scott is a great guy.
I had a Quick Rod as my main amp from 2013 until 2023 when I got an AX8. It was the first amp model I used, and agree with using OD1 for a great straight up rock tone. Fractal got very close with the amp model… I was able to duplicate my original tube tone to the point where I actually sold my quick rod within about a month of owning the Fractal and I keep it as one of my regular tones for live use to this day.
I have been having a hard time getting tones for a very 80’s Sabbath sounding project. I had settled on the Powerball model but on a whim checked out the Nitro and was like “THATS IT!”.
A few years ago I sold my kemper for a quick rod and Nitro. I had a lot of fun with them. As far as hot rodded marshalls though I prefer headfirst and monomyth then Ceriatone followed by Splawn. I live like 5 minutes down the road from them so its always tempting when i pass their shop.
Headfirst are my favourite at the moment too! Jason does amazing work, I really want to order something from him soon. Love my Ceriatone Molecular too.
@@LeonTodd Leon!!!! How are you? Checking back in after all these minutes have gone by! I am hoping you do something special with Jason from Headfirst. I can see the Leon Todd Headfirst signature amp: THE LEGEND! 4 channels, midi control and a special tolex cover. I'll email Jason and get it started!!
@LeonTodd I knew Dal back then! Scott invited a bunch of us from the splawn forums to a mini amp convention and bbq years ago. Did that a couple years in a row. Did you meet Tree, too? Didn't know people could get that tall. Great bunch of guys down there.
You've mentioned a few times that you like to mix two or so amps on albums. Have you tried running dual amps in the Axe? I used to dual amp IRL... first ran a Mesa DC-10 alongside a Mesa Stiletto DS2, then later on a Mesa Studio alongside an Engl E530 (both into 2:90). I haven't been able to get a good sound with dual amps in my 2XL, and can only run one in my FM3. Can you take a swing at a dual amp setup in the Axe3? Like, mono mixed, 80/20 panned, or full stereo? Might be fun :)
Yeah I've done a few videos like that. IMO I find it more effective to blend different cabs with the same amp model for a live style preset. How good is the Stiletto btw? Super underrated amps
@@LeonTodd After about two weeks of owning the Stiletto I'd learned about half of AC/DC's catalogue :). I don't think I touched a 6L6 amp for a year or so after getting it. Such a fantastic Marshall clone! My first EL34 amp, though, was the Laney GH50L. Totally converted me.
There was a part of a recent Headfirst Amps livestream where Jason and Dave looked at the Stiletto circuit and were like "oh cool, one channel is an 800 and one is an SLO". I had a GH100L for years, beast! @@wildealien
This sounds great - The Splawn Nitro totally sounds like 'you'. I am probably more in the Q-rod 1-1 camp. That was a really great rock tone - I should try both of them against my latest 2203 tones (which I also dig quite a bit)
I had a quick rod for a while but I was naive and didn’t appreciate it for what it was at the time. Tried the models today on the fm3 and wow they’re good!

I've only heard lovely things about Scott!
01:56 fantastic Jerry Cantrell AIC tone here

Had a Quick Rod in my pre-Fractal days. 2nd gear also had some great Eddie vibes going. They seemed pretty affordable for boutique amps back then too.

Looking at prices now and they're pretty well priced for a US made all tube monster!

It all sounds glorious. I'd be happy to play with that sound. Any of those sounds.
2:00 putting this here for later. Nice one thanks!
The Splawn models rock! Highly underrated and don't see many players use them yet they always ask for modded Marshalls. There you go! 👍
Couldn't agree more!

Wow! I've never heard of this. Now I have to go listen to everything. Great video!
You should!
@LeonTodd WOW!!!!!! EXTREMLY CRISP SOUNDING!!!!!!

What a great brand name, and both models are meaty sounding. That nitro is awesome 👍

Back in my amp days, I used a Splawn Quickrod. I got many compliments on my tone!
Always wanted one!
Splawn Nitro could just be my all time favorite amp in real life.
I was a Splawn endorsed musician for about ten years back in late oughts. Had a quick rod. I think my sound clips may still be on Scott's website.
That's wild. I met their rep (Dal?) on tour in 2013 and they offered to hook me up but it never ended up happening. Great amps.

This used to be one of my fav amps in the Axe FX II. I need to make another preset with it.
I have a QR 100 and it’s killer! Much prefer it to the Friedman JJ100 I had before it.

I have both of them and they kick ass
I have never used the Splawns but these sound great.
I reckon the Nitro is JT Industries worthy \M/
@LeonTodd I'm in a JVM mood at the moment and can't seem to want to break free. I'll get there at some point.

Yeah the Nitro with a boost brings the Mesa meets Marshall thing home for me
Addicting tone!!!!!!
06:35 wow your alternate palm mutes sound like downstrokes... Amazed and jealous af :)
Too kind mate! Always working on rhythm guitar stuff
Fantastic ❤
Thanks 🤗

They're very satisfying hey. Less smooth and srticky than the Friedman's.
@@LeonTodd Yes! Something about the clarity in the high end is very satisfying.
Nitrous 1 and TS for the brootz !!
Good combo hey!
Nitro can do the brootz with no TS though.

Brutal tone
Im getting killer tones out of my Splawns
Really getting close to buying a DGT based on what i hear tbh
Think what you hear is mostly axe fx tbh
They're amazing instruments
Own the AxeFX 3 already and its the guitar i like. AxeFX sounds amazing but the guitar matter's as well. @@martyshwaartz971
Video idea ! Dial in fractal unit to match popular neural DSP Gojira!
Gojira are 5150 users right?
@@LeonTodd yeah pretty sure modeled off the 5153 EVH … point being it’s a popular plugin and pretty sure you could get the Fractal to nail it (FM3) !
