    Shooting the French 1777 flintlock cavalry pistol was something that was on my bucket list for a long time. This martial pistol plays an important part in firearms history being one of the very first models to have a separate frame. This firearm looks beautiful, but I was always curious how it performs with the original service ball, service load. Now here is the answer. History, tactics and modern time target shooting. Enjoy! .70 caliber pistol? Damn, that's big enough you could load it with buckshot and it'd be devastating at short range.

      An early example of munitions "standardisation". The 1777 Charleville musket carried by the French troops was also 0.69" calibre, so the ball would fit either the musket or the pistol.

      Now imagine resting and recuperating on a beach late in the afternoon...
      The warm Sun drifts slowly across the sky, and floats confidently but ever so gently down towards the horizon, while the remaining fluffy clouds obscure its beam like feather downing suspended in the moment; leisurely biding their time above where the sky meets the sea. The breeze exerts a cool, calming feeling on your skin as it brushes against your face, comforting you as it does so. You find yourself standing on the soft sand, still warm from the summer Sun earlier in the day, but now slowly mellowing to a reassuring tepidity...
      And then some idiot shoots you with an old flintlock pistol. Stunned, you look up to see Frank Olegson. You and Frank go way back, but it is not a history you care to remember. Your history with Frank's daughter Isabella, however, is one that you do remember - and gladly. Ms. Isabella, you remember, is a strikingly pretty brunette in her early twenties, and has always bee...
      *And then you die*

      tbf, they would probably get within 25 feet/8 meters before firing from horseback. Just far enough to be outside of pike/melee range.
      Idk why he only shot at 25 meters and 3 meters . I think something in between would be more representative of their usage case.

      These things were pointed, i.e. aimed instinctively like a longbow and over distances not exceeding 15- 20 meters. If you try to aim along the barrel of this thing as if it were a modern pistol you won’t hit a thing. Shooting these things requires a skillset most modern shooters don’t have since they are hardwired to shoot with sights. Shooting instinctively requires un-learning everything you thought you knew about aiming.

    • @mysock351C
      @mysock351C 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ChristianThePagan With such a loose fitting projectile and no rifling there's no way to really be accurate with that thing. The ball will end up deviating in a random direction depending on how much and what angle of spin it ends up with from impacting the walls of the barrel.

    • @ChristianThePagan
      @ChristianThePagan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      mysock351C Where is it chiseled in stone that the ball has to be loose fitting? When loaded carefully with a tight fitting ball these things can be surprisingly accurate out to 10-15 meters. If I was issued a couple of these things I’d load each carefully with a tight fitting ball before going into action for two accurate shots and then transition to a sabre which was the standard practice at the time. Better two accurate shots at a distance than having to ride up to your opponent and shove the thing into his ribs before firing. There is a reason why many officers took duelling pistols into the field, they and their ammo was made with accuracy in mind.

    • @mysock351C
      @mysock351C 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChristianThePagan I never said it was. But even a tighter fitting ball will be inaccurate due to imbalances and aerodynamics, esp. the Magnusson effect if the ball attains any spin. If you did a nice job casting it, cleaning up the sprue and polishing it, and fully packing it with wading I agree it would probably help. In order to somewhat "replicate" rifling the ball has to remain stationary in flight, which is a tough task. Any rotation, imbalance, or surface imperfections at all will cause it to deviate at random. I can say that loading a BB gun with actual precision ball bearings made it quite accurate. But a ball bearing has a very nice surface finish and is dynamically balanced. Something very hard to do with casting, esp. in the 17th and 18th century, not to mention the bore has to be kept very clean or you have a hand grenade instead of a gun.

    This pistol was supposed to be fired at 'brûle pourpoint' (point blank), I don't think accuracy was ever a concern. As a hussard for instance you were supposed to fire it then draw your sword.

    • @capandball
      @capandball  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I disagree. The pistol was a secondary weapon for the light cavalry. First is the sabre, last line of defense is the pistol. Both the French and both the Austrian manuals shared info on maximum shooting range for flintlock pistol. Not a point blank arm at all. Wheel lock pistols were supposed to be used as primary cavalry arm in the 17th century, but not in the late 18th and first half of 19th century.

  • @macnutz4206
    @macnutz4206 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Shooting accurately from horseback is not as easy as one might think. Add to that the delay between pulling the trigger and the actual firing of the gun that one experiences with flintlocks, it gets much more difficult again.
    Even with modern revolvers shooting accurately from horseback requires a lot of practice. Even a human sized target at ten yards is easy to miss on the back of a galloping horse. It is a bit like running and shooting at the same time only harder. Timing is every thing. Nothing is more fun than shooting from horse back.
    I've never shot bows from horse back but I suspect that also takes a lot of practice. The very powerful short bows used for buffalo hunting by native Americans were intended to be used at very close ranges in both hunting and war.

    That was fun. Now we know how so many people survived pistol duels. It was not uncommon for both parties to miss, decide honor had been served, then walked away, happy to be alive.
    It would still be useful for firing into the ranks and riding away to reload. :)

    • @capandball
      @capandball  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, the aim of the duel was not necessarily killing the other person, but to show that you stand up for your honour.

    • @macnutz4206
      @macnutz4206 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even with modern weapons the majority of people killed with pistols are less than seven yards from the pistol. No matter what you can do on a range, a real fighting situation will rob you of a large percentage of your range skills. Same is true of unarmed fighting.
      Stress has a powerful effect on the mind and the body.

    • @shrugger1
      @shrugger1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Burr accidentally killed President Jackson in their duel. He was actually trying to just wound him. But point of aim was decidedly...off.

    • @macnutz4206
      @macnutz4206 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aiming at the centre of body mass might be the safest shot with one of these. Safe in that you will likely miss altogether.
      It certainly wasn't a career move on Burr's part.

    This is why it was possible for soldiers in the Napoleonic period to march shoulder to shoulder and not be mown down in droves. That said, you DID manage to hit the target from 25m - with a slow, heavy, ball that would have caused a lot of damage to the person it hit, even if it was not the person you aimed at :-)

    I have an odd question for you. The Charleville 1777 is one of my favorite flintlock pistols by design but the company that made reproductions I think, Armi San Marco, went out of business back in 2005 or sometime around then so finding these is hard to come by. However, Military Heritage has a French 1766 Model Cavalry pistol and they're similar in design with that slick look and tapered barrel. Is it possible to make modifications to the 1766 to make it into the 1777?

    well the accuracy might not be good but that pistol is not meant for target shooting most of the time you would probably shoot at a concentration of troops like a tightly packed infantry line and in that case accuracy is not that important but you would still be quite outgunned by infantry muskets because of this as i understand it many countries saw firearms as a secondary weapon and sabers or lances as the primary

    How come that the barrel is so thin, despiten the caliber and load?

    I think it would make a decent 18th century shotgun pistol if anything.

    I always saw these as more like a tiny blunderbuss than as pistols

    What would be the effective range with buckshot?

    why they weren't use them with buckshot in combat back then? with the little accuracy of the smoothbore, flintlock mechanism and no sights of the pistol they would have more chances to hit someone!

      Did you watch? With a ball the procedure is powder, ball, tamp, prime, cock, shoot. With shot, it's powder, wad, tamp, shot, wad, tamp, prime, shoot. You want to do that in combat? You also need to kill a guy possibly wearing steel armor, hitting them isn't enough.

    is it possible they really did not go for distance, as any battle then would have been face to face up close and I mean up close.so accuracy really would not have mattered, keep the videos coming...

    Actually, why didn't they convert it to a shotgun, like you did? That would be way more devastating!
    Actually, I don't know if 'shotguns' existed back then, was it deemed unhonourably?

    Great lookin' pistol, much "fun" to shoot at very close range with anything you could "stuff" down the bore! Bread dressing, grapes, corn, gravel, spent .22 cases, nails, the skies da limit! How about shooting grass or flower seeds at hard to reach places?! The pistol would make a great vase too! A good place to schtick your finger so you don't pick your nose! "Ach du lieber mein schatz, und Gesundheit !!!!! Simply, I'd love to buy such a pistol if the price is decent. YA!
