Mad scientist, Baron Forteseque, has created a machine capable of distorting time and space. Unfortunately, the machine has gained consciousness and has distorted reality, causing wide-spread chaos and destruction.
Enter 6 mercenaries for hire; armed to the teeth, it is up to them to fight their way across multiple levels to destroy the Chaos Engine.
Undoubtedly one of the finest games on the Amiga and also of it's particular generation, I decided to do a longplay of the Amiga CD32 version of the game. It's practically identical to the AGA disk version (the CD32 was equipped with the AGA chipset) apart from an animated introduction with voice-over.
The game features levels with multiple paths, secrets galore, great graphic, sound and playability. The AI for the CPU-controlled player is pretty decent too; it will actively try to collect loot, activate nodes, shoot monsters and avoid danger. The effectiveness of the AI can be upgraded in the in-game shop too, improving it's effectiveness.
A few of the game music tracks have been remade as full CD audio and sound really nice, but the actual level music is the same as the original disk version, which is a real shame. There's nothing wrong with the music, but knowing Richard Joseph, he would have done them justice.
In addition to the music, some of the environmental and ambient level sounds have been digitally recorded and added as tracks to the CD (listen at 6:50 for the bird-song); it's better quality than the sound in the disk version. To be honest though, I'd never have noticed unless I played all the CD tracks separately to find out what they were.
The enhanced AGA colour palette is also up for debate as to whether it's an improvement over the ECS original; the muted and slightly drab colours of the original ECS disk version complemented the overall atmosphere of the game.
All these niggles aside, it's still a brilliant game and is crying out for an HD remake (not 3D though!)
    Enjoy!

I was about to post something very similar to a Chaos clip from the STE. Such a shame they along with many other UK based software houses simply didn't keep going. Imagine what they could produce on a current gen console. Nothing comes close to the Amiga in terms of sound when compared to other computers or consoles from that era, it outclassed everything until '92. But the last gen SNES games were amazing, they pushed so much out of it. Back to this game, the 1st level music is spot on, right amount of dark atmosphere, tempo and beat to get you into the zone. I put my Amiga away around '94/95 and still hear so much of it's music. 2nd stage of Captain planet, intro to Lotus 2, Zool intro, body blows intro, cannon fodder intro, Speedball 2 intro, Xenon 2 beat dis, Lemmings ost, 'Wiz and Liz, Sim city ost, Project x intro and so many more. I'm so tempted to crack open my Cartoon Classics A500+ and load up one of the supplied games, I have them all boxed and in grade A condition. Man the boxes used to be so well made, not like the SNES boxes that would perish but no where as good as the Sega plastic cases.

There is currently a patch that fixes oversaturated colors in the Sega Genesis version of The Chaos Engine to make them look more like the Amiga version.
The patch also fixes the speed of music when the game is running at 60 FPS, from an emulator.
The PAL version of the Sega console retains the original title of The Chaos Engine.
It is in this same version where the patch must be applied, which can be downloaded from the following page:
    www.romhacking.net/hacks/2754/
Having the ROM file, the patch can be applied from this page:
    www.marcrobledo.com/RomPatcher.js/
The Sega Genesis version has some unique features, such as the ability to choose between three levels of difficulty and a wider field of view (around 20%), which substantially improves gameplay, by being able to see enemies appear from a greater distance.
I sincerely believe that with the application of this patch, this version now becomes the best option when it comes to enjoying this classic.
    www.romhacking.net/hacks/2754/
Teniendo el archivo ROM, el parche se puede aplicar desde esta página:
    www.marcrobledo.com/RomPatcher.js/

As far as I can see, the SFX are really enhanced on this version, graphically the players have subtle colour enhancements due to the superior colour palette of the CD32, other than that the music is not the standard 4 channel mix of the original Amiga and is mixed propery for speakers/headphones etc. Everything is enhanced but it's very subtle. But I need to own this now haha
