    The Amiga version is supreme but the MD is rather good too. Musically though the Amiga version is just perfect and it's really the only real choice you have for the best experience unless playing the Steam one. The only issue is that the graphics are too sharp on the Steam version ie no natural crt look which really makes for a too clean image

    CD32 probably should have been the best - but the colours? Not good. I give the Amiga version the edge.
    Then the soundtrack. The Amiga and CD32 have that over the rest. Really good.

      @cehaem2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's way more colourful since CD32 used the same enhanced AGA chipset that A1200 had.

    • @PaulRoneClarke
      @PaulRoneClarke ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cehaem2 It is more colourful. But in this case (just IMO) that's not an improvement. CD32 extra colour choices make it worse to my eyes. But that's obviously subjective.

    The Amiga CD32 version is clearly the definitive version. So sad how those Atari folk got half the frame rate and colors and sound for all their ports. (unless the coders did a lazy Atari port on the Ami). Weird what people used for gaming back in the day. Our expectations were simpler then.

    Bitmap Bros said they only did the ST version as they had the level editor tools in place.
    It's extremely weak compared to the Amiga version and I say that as an Atari 520STFM owner during that era.
    The scrolling on the Megadrive version should of been much better as well.

      Bitmap Bros could have bother a bit more with this conversion to ST/STE since it was a major game. STE had better scrolling, better colors and maybe better framerate. On the STE, it could run in half Meg, on STFM it needed 1MB. However, they could use DMA samples (several games did so like Wings of Death or Lethal Xcess) and utilize 1MB for STE too that would help to the audio. In this video, it seems that the comparison is for normal STF/FM version, not STE.

      I think you're being a little unfair to the ST version. It's fast-paced and the multi-directional scrolling works perfectly well. It's a great achievement. What other ST game offers such smooth gameplay with so many enemies, bullets and explosions on the screen at once? The only disappointing aspect is the sound compared to the other versions. Still perfectly playable, though - and the colour palette works much better than the versions that are over-saturated. Pity they didn't show the STE version as that has slightly smoother scrolling.

      Yes, this is the genuine ST version - a rare sight on TH-cam, as most channels show the STE version - but CLAIM it's the ST version. Good to see the actual ST version as it has the best colour palette of all the versions , in my opinion - and really shows off what the base ST can do. Lovely work.

    "the character The Preacher had his clerical collar removed and was renamed The Scientist. Ahh the Very Beginning of Political Correctness and silencing Freedom of Speech. This change pissed me off even in the 90's. If I am not mistaken though I think the European SNES and MegaDrive versions (still called The Chaos Engine) retain The Preacher.... I have them and will have to check....and I think it was the "The Soldiers Of Fortune" versions for USA that were changed.
    EDIT: NOPE! Just checked....its "The Scientist in both versions The Chaos Engine and Soliers Of Fortune both on the SNES and GENESIS.
    Maybe the PC version is intact.

      The "cancel culture" isn't anything new. Isaac Deutscher didn't become a tenured professor in the 60s because he was a leftist.

    A curious fact is that Baron Fortesque's dialogue (at the end of the game) appears incomplete in the Amiga 1200 and CD32 versions, as well as in the new PC version, from 2013 (you can check it on TH-cam). This to me is unforgivable... The end of this game is a great reward for the player, and this mistake completely ruins it.
    Certainly the interface has been improved in the console versions, the health bars have been integrated into the game area, instead of taking up much of that space, covering the bottom of the screen, and reducing visibility.
    Many believe that the Mega Drive version is better than the Super Nintendo version, but I totally disagree with that point of view. The SNES version has some minor issues, like a bad aspect ratio, which makes the picture look a bit flat... and some slowdowns, which could be fixed using the SA-1 Root hack, as was done with Super R -Type. Personally, I hope that some kind soul will make it happen. There are also some emulators that can fix both problems.
    The Mega Drive version is unique in that it has a wider field of view than all other versions, including the original Amiga version. This, however, sometimes creates erratic movement patterns in the behavior of enemies when they appear at the edge of the screen.
    Also, honestly, the graphics in this version look inferior thanks to its poor color palette, which makes everything look very green and low in contrast. Although it is true that there is currently a patch that partially corrects this problem, emulating the color palette of the original version of the Amiga 500, in my opinion it still does not look good.
    Baron Fortesque's talking head at the end of the game has a comically high-pitched voice in the Mega Drive version (seriously, it's horrible). It looks like it would have been breathing helium. On the contrary, his voice in the SNES version sounds absolutely stunning, identical to the Amiga versions.
    The Mega Drive version was based on the original Commodore Amiga 500 version... while the Super Nintendo version was based on the "superior" Commodore Amiga 1200 version. Therefore, the creators of the game (The Bitmap Brothers) they considered that the SNES version was superior to the Mega Drive version... This is what they say in this interview:
    www.boxedpixels.co.uk/2015/11/snes-review-chaos-engines-game-092.html?m=1
    I think the Amiga 500 version is still the best, but only because it lacks the problems that affect the other versions. If the A1200 version didn't have the problem with Baron Fortesque's ending dialogue, or if the MS-DOS version matched the Amiga versions in sound quality, the situation would be different.

    One of the most overrated Amiga games .. graphics where OK but not great, animations where notchy, music was terrible and monotonous, gameplay was dull and boring and it overall felt undone with some elements missing which would have been needed making it interesting and fun.
