This is perfect. 99% of beginning guitarists I hear trying to improvise just aimlessly run up and down scales and Tom just tells him to take a few notes and apply them musically. I feel like guitarists forget the musical aspect of guitar solos and also forget how much rhythm can change there "random" playing and make it sound interesting. Great job to both of these guys
Man that's such an obvious thing to do, shame I never ever thought of it... amazing lesson, I always hated improvising because it usually never has a structure, but playing variations on the lick gives it an identity and allows the listener to know where you are heading
i love how confident he is in the guy. hes just like "look at you! look at what i made you! i am the master of teaching, look what ive taught" hahaha great lesson
great lesson, ill say I watch this one more than any of them, but why is only tom getting recognized? like I mean this guy doubled his potential and playing ability in less than 10 minutes. great job man, keep it up:)
this is why I like this tom hess guy, he doesn't bug about holding the guitar the way he's holding it (I had a guitar teacher who did) and he gives you genius ideas
Tom Hess, take a bow! I was stagnating like anything on my improvisations.. For the last couple of weeks I barely touched my guitar and just smoked weed... I felt like I'm never gonna play anything cool again. Now I feel encouraged to take up my guitar again.. Thanks Tom..
I think part of the problem with some guitarists is just not having the confidence. I can tell the instructor helped give him some validation that he was good enough and then he started to play better after that. So yeah, we can definitely run into mental blocks when it comes to being creative.
Tom Hess is an incredible teacher, I took the online improvisation lessons and I had no idea it would be so effective. All I want to do now is start from the very beginning of the lessons and do them all over again now, which I will. :)
This is so right! Its like just taking one idea and milking it! Instead of just going through all the licks you know already and coming up with different variations! Tom can I say that you are a genius?
the thing about tom is he understands how the human brain work. It's very important to understand how the brain work so u know what kind of info to feed it to solve a specific problem
Dan's technique is awkward. His thumb should really be higher hanging over the 6th string when he's on the high strings. How on earth he can bend at all is beyond me...

This is gold, indeed. All that guy really needed was a new perspective on the guitar and music. Hess seems like an awesome teacher!
I actually thought the guys first improvisation was really good and relaxed,

wow, he's a seriously good teacher. I have had issues as well with randomly picking notes out of the scale, this is really helping me

The immediate difference from his first attempt at soloing to just rephrase the one lick was incredible.
