Wow, I'm not the only one who does stuff like this? Awesome!
In Mario RPG I began a file and save at Mario's Pad, then I play through the game as long as possible without saving again, when I need to quit I just die on purpose and Mario gets sent back to Mario's Pad, but surprise surpise, Mario keeps all the levels you gained, then just save again at Mario's Pad before you shut off the system until you feel like playing again. After a couple run throughs you can start the game with an insanely overpowered level 30 Mario who can OHKO many of the early game bosses. Its pretty funny.

I actually played through Super Mario World without the switch palaces recently. It definitely adds a surprising amount of difficulty, especially for Yellow and Green. The game is surprisingly sparse with Power-Ups when you take those out of the equation, and it definitely makes for a bigger challenge.

You definitely have to try Gigantic Army then. It's a modern indie game that's a homage to this game and all others like it, I've got it on switch but I think it's on every platform including pc. Mr. Drunk here made a video about it that pretty much just said "I don't really need to say anything, just go play this right now". So I bought it immediately and am glad I did. It's a bit weird, you can't seem to save so you start from the beginning every time you open it to play, but that's not too much of a problem.

Hey if you want to play Super Mario World in a difficult and new way just play it on my Super Nintendo.
On mine, from the beginning, all of the bosses were invisible so the only way I saw them was by the dust trail they leave behind.
Years later I was playing it at a friends house and noticed the bosses were visible making the bosses a cake-walk for me.
I thought maybe it was the cartridge but after testing discovered it was just my system.
I encountered other difficult things with some of the Donkey Kong Country games etc. that differed from a normal persons experience but this was the most bold, and also the first game I played on the SNES. 😂

Have you ever tried Eye of the Beholder? you can play with a dead party LOL! you need to get an extra character (5 at least), and then kill your original 4, then kick out of the party the 5th member and bam! you can play with the dead. You can STILL beat the game if you use throwing weapons, but it is really difficult. It is just for the lulz.

In Hagane, I just backflip through everything. you are entirely invincible as you hold the button and I only used front flip attacks, so basically a playthrough only using L, R, and movement, until you have to jump.
    U.N. squadron without buying anything.
In metal warriors you can try to do a pilot only playthrough, only using mechs when you have to, usually letting the enemies open up paths for you. I haven't tried this in gunhazard.
Kirby super star with no abilities can be a fun challenge.

I do three things for Zelda Link to the Past: Pacifist run (stun with boomerang is okay, and anything in a dungeon is fair game), and an interesting thing where I grab the main treasure from a dungeon, but then leave. Best done in dark world, and you can get the mirror shield from Turtle Rock before you have to go back and beat bosses.
Third thing is just no-death run. Gotta make that death count zero!

  • @rufrox9947

My favorite alternate way to play FF6 is the "NMG" method.
NMG stands for "Natural Magic Game" and the goal is to never teach characters spells through Espers or Items. So no elemental shields or Memento ring, and no magicite on characters. Everyone has to use their innate abilities and commands to pull you through the game. I played the entirety of the GBA version including the bonus dungeons and I had a blast. Most fun way to play one more time and it doesn't require any modding.

  • @johannhowitzer

I did a challenge run of Link Between Worlds that took me almost a year to complete, on and off. Hero Mode, deathless (dying means start over from new game), and you can only collect Ravio's rentals and heart containers. No heart pieces, armor or sword upgrades, no shield, no bottles, nothing but the Master Sword and your wits. Things get truly brutal when you get to Lorule, and the Ganon fight is extremely tense. The first phase takes 64 hits, and everything he does either oneshots or twoshots you. When I finally did it, though, that was one of the most triumphant moments I've ever had in a game. What a rush.

Here's one I did a bit of as a kid: Kirby's Dreamland 3, try going through each level while holding onto one particular Copy Ability (combined with one particular animal companion, or no animals at all.... though in some stages you might have to stop short since the stage requires flying or something that the animal is incapable of, but if you have a second controller, you could just hand the animal off to Gooey for those segments). Of course, this kind of playing can also be done in any other Kirby game that features Copy Abilities. My intent was to play through the whole game (and other Kirby titles up to Kirby64) using each ability, but I stopped short, having just gone through the game strictly using the basic inhale ability, and I think the Burning ability (going through the whole game with Burning+Chuchu, now that was an interesting challenge). I guess I got worn out on it, but if you pace yourself properly, it seems like an interesting (if repetitive) goal to try and strive for.
You could also do this in certain Mario games that feature power-ups. In the case of the SNES, there's the Super Mario All-Stars version of SMB3 (which is made all the more easier since you have a save feature combined with the ability to stock up on power-ups), Super Mario World (which has a more limited number of power-ups compared to SMB3, but makes up for it a bit by having Yoshi in different colors), and even Yoshi's Island (stock up on one particular kind of melon and access it from the pause menu). Really, just about any game that features semi-permanent power-ups could be played like this (Mega Man games could be worth considering as well, though your weapons do have limited usage and some enemies are straight up immune to certain attacks). Just a real shame that the Donkey Kong Country games couldn't let you take animal companions outside of levels.

@@kyluya Player 1 moves on the overworld/towns/dungeons. In battle, control of the characters is split in half between players 1 and 2. I dont think there was a specific way to decide who controls who, but you can organize it by moving the order of the party. Also increase the speed of the active time battle system to make things feel less "turn-based."

@@mr.vidjagamez9896 it was decided by character slots and iirc you could arrange it to where 2P had control of three guys while 1P had the first slot and navigated the maps.

My unconventional playstyle that generated the most fun was on a Playstation game, Final Fantasy Tactics. I used the Game Shark codes to overwrite generics with story characters that couldn't be gotten in the group otherwise. Since they overwrote a generic of the same gender, they were considered fully usable by the game's standards. Some were a bit broken as in having only regular attacks to use (like the final boss, but still usable!), but some were actually fully programmed with full skill sets and abilities, making the game quite a different treat! Quite a few still were able to change class and such as if nothing was "wrong".
Another fun one was actually using some games' bugs and glitches to play the games in unconventional ways, like using the sketch glitch from Final Fantasy 6 to break the inventory...then still try to beat the game. Or on Super Mario Bros., using the "get hit by Bowser at the same time as stepping on the Axe while Super" to make it so that Super was your small form, small was your Super form, and small-and-Fiery was the Fiery form. Kinda fun being in a Fiery Mario form and not being able to break blocks!

There was a goal scoring trick in NHL 96, and that made your challenge idea easier than it seemed. I'd beat the Whalers with Eric Lindross 70 something to 21 regularly.

On Super Mario Kart, there’s a code on the character select screen to play every race mini as if you were hit by lightning. It’s the best thing to do when 150cc is too easy.
I can’t recall exactly, but I think you either press X and B together.

That SMW no switch palace sounds brutal. Considering how easy the switch palaces can make some areas of the game.

The second time I played through Final Fantasy IV I grinded like crazy in a few areas to ridiculously level up my characters. I found some rare items in the process and also exploited the heck out of the item duplication tricks. It added HOURS to the gameplay, but I also was able to kill some bosses with a single attack which was good for a laugh.

I like the fact that you stay on level 1 in some kingdom hearts games it makes for a hard game an enemy pattern learning which is heavily missed if you play it on normal like most people do

I once played through Shadowrun only using the Beretta (starting gun) through the whole game. It forces you to rely much more on using magic and hiring offensive Shadowrunners. A bit tedious at times but a fun challenge overall.

If you happen to have a dance pad sitting around somewhere, you can always boot up an emulator and play your favorites using that. If you've only got one, of course, you'll need some keyboard keys too, but arcade cabinets have buttons on their front, so that's fine. If you're looking for people who do this on Twitch, PeekingBoo has an actual arcade cabinet (so he's got 2 pads), and I myself have an Omega 4X - both of us play non-rhythm games on dance pad using our respective setups.

I try to play Super Mario World without skipping levels by flying, but the most brutal challenge I've faced was completing the Special Stages without losing Yoshi. Specially since in Tubular, Mario is supposed to get a balloon to complete the level and he can't get it without abandoning Yoshi, so it makes that specific leval brutal
Also, trying to 100% (or 102/105%) Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3 is super hard. The thing I wish I had noticed before is that DKC2 indicates when you found all bonus levels by adding an exclamation mark to that level's titles, this kept me from 100% the game for a long time since I didn't know whether I had completed all bonus levels in a level
Most people criticize Capcom's Aladdin because it's too easy, specially compared to the Virgin's game made for the Mega Drive which I personally think is a cheap and unforgiving game. But if you want a real challenge in the Super Nintendo game, try completing it collecting all red diamonds, it is brutal. If you miss even one and completes a level, you have to restart the game; if you use a continue, you lose all you're previously collected red diamonds; if you turn off the console and use the password system to go back, guess what? The game doesn't record how many red diamonds you collected, so you might as well restart the game. So it requires a flawless playthrough from start to end and, even though it's cheap, I think the fact that it's a self-imposed challenge make me resent it a lot less than Virgin's Alladin. And the Snes game is so fun that I actually enjoy trying it out, collecting the red diamonds require you to use all kind of acrobatics and platforming which really enhances my experience, even when I fail I just keep playing trying to do my best because it's such a fun game
Outside of the Super Nintendo, I had lots of fun playing Metal Gear Solid 2, 3 and Peace Walker with no deaths and without the tranquilizer gun. And Super Mario Sunshine without using the hover is a pretty interesting experience

on MiSTer, ive tried playing Mario Kart and F-Zero with a pc steering wheel. F-Zero was a no-go, but mario kart was very playable! Thats a way to dial up the difficulty, for sure ^-^ Outrun on genesis is another that worked great with that setup. I was able to clear the game with that setup.
Also, increasing the CPU/Super-FX chips clock speed on SNES will not only make the framerate better for many games, but makes the super-fx games play at a faster speed as well, which ups the challenge level. I know this isnt an option for most folks with original consoles, but on MiSTer or an emulator that supports similar functionality, this can be a fun way to revisit Star Fox/2, Stunt Race FX, etc.

A few challenges I have under my belt your viewers may like to try out for themselves.
Beat all Super Mario Games using small mario. SMB 3 has one exception in world 7 with the stage that has nothing but piranha plants. SMB2 you have to immediately shrink your character at the start of each turn.
Then there are RPG solo character challenges. FF1, FF5, FF6 (with the exception of the team segments, each team gets one character), FF7, DW4 are all beatable with one character parties. FF5 was probably the hardest one beat solo character.
You can do this, or, learn how to survive the coming transition. Hmmm, what to do?

The Zelda/Metroid Rabdomizer needs more updates. Outside of cosmetic characters, it could do crazy things like randomize bosses (as in, a Zelda boss room could end being a Metroid boss instead and vice versa), tweak the algorithm to encourage more game swapping, Zelda dungeon keys in Metroid, etc.

I will definitely try that Mario World no exclamation box's thing. And will definitely pick up NHL 96. I'm very wary of picking up sports games on SNES, even though I love sports games on NES. Never heard of that Lamborghini game. But need to get that and a mouse. Being able to play a racing game with a mouse in it self makes it a must buy for me
