You would never attempt to get to know a person by making flash cards about them. But by enjoying time together you will find that after the years you know 10,000 things about them that you could never have memorized.

I learned English by learning like a baby. I completely transcending from my native language content to English content. I tried to enjoy the content not translate everything. After years when I didn't understand some words I would sometimes search up synonyms, the meaning or images on google. Translating and studying is bad for you *WHEN LEARNING A LANGUAGE* as you will have to translate in your brain, recall words every single time and you will also waste and spend hours of your life just studying. It's important to *learn like a baby*

I am trying to learn Korean because I enjoy Korean drama series. Learning Hangul alphabets at the moment. Having fun so far.
I also learned French because I enjoy their culture and cinema.
I also learned English because I loved how it sounded.
I must add that Spanish is my mother tongue.
Having ADHD and being in my 50’s certainly does not make things easy when learning but I don’t care because I am having fun. I have low expectations so I don’t put pressure on myself. It’s give myself permission to fail.
I must say that learning about proper pronunciation through phonetics of a language is crucial.

Using the workout example, I guess it depends on your personality and goals; because when o train, I track many objective variables to ensure I’m getting better at a certain rate (weekly, monthly, and yearly).
So what this tells me is that you can try memorizing vocabulary, or you don’t have to; either way, do what’s enjoyable for you. And of course, do it enough times, because the way I look at it: no matter which method you use, you need enough repetition for it to be effective - just like working out.

  • @destro1989
