The archer did not start it's life as a dump truck. It is purpouse built for this application, but it is essentially a volvo dumper. It is not a truck, it is an off road capable, all-wheel drive, articulated veichle wich has more in common with an articulted loader. The gun did not use to be a static gun. It is based on the Bofors FH77 wich is a self-propelled field howitser. With an auto-loader. Probably the world's most advanced field howitzer in it's day. The FH77 could drive shorter distances by it's own power, but ws ment to be towed longer distances.
Just a correction, it’s based on Haubits 77 by Bofors. The predecessor was called Bandkanon. The engine itself is really a tractor dumper so it’s not going to be fast
What is the new British part of it? Tea-capability :) I know the Swdish army used to have old British tanks in the Cold War ear and everybody was so amazed about the tea-thing. "How could I even remeber that before I had a coffe...".

Excellent bit of kit. Makes me wonder why we don't just buy a lot more of these instead of the Boxer RCH155. 2 types seems odd & maybe the Boxer with the 120mm turretted mortar system could be a better use of those hulls?
Different systems for different crews for different missions. When it comes to war and militaries there is rarely a one size fits all. Archer would be used by your arty regiments while the boxer could be used for some of the more mobile infantry or reccy kind of regiments. no point having a system that is slow for fast an mobile units. The MOD seems to be somewhat actually listening to the squaddies a little more since ukraine happened so itslikely the reason we will have 2 systems doing the same job is based on soldiers thoughts.
RCH155 is designed to be airlifted. Archer is not, it's too long, whopping 4m longer. Swedes never thought it would need to fit well in any cargo aircraft.
The British military can’t decide what there goals are so obviously they will not spend wisely because there is no plan. Also the inconsistency of the budget causes major problems with development.
The most off road SPG because of light weight and a large wheel base. Uses speed and camo nets instead of armor. Best used in a natural forest and difficult terrain that looks unattainable.
Would it be better to position the emergency shovel anywhere than behind the back wheels. It will always be muddy and wet left there, in those conditions frozen to the frame. Just a thought.

One was hit, was hit in the rear while driving on a road, got damaged but not destroyed. could drive away. One was also hit by an Iskander strike, not sure about the outcome, but it probably got destroyed, or heavily damaged. It is as good or even better with the articulated truck compared to many tracked systems. you can compare the M109 with the archer if you wish to, where M109 Weight 27.5Ton. top speed 56km/h. range 350km. max lateral lean 40% Vs Archer 33Ton. Top speed 70km/h. range 650km. Max lateral lean 53.2% (28.0°) (SE). And (UK) top speed 90 km/h. Range 800 km. Max lateral lean 34.5% (19°). They have proven to have excellent tracking and ability to treverse both deep snow, mud, and uneven terrain. while maintaining unparalleded speed and stability on roads compared to other systems. The articulated Volvo chassi has been in use in mineing and forestry for 60 years. and has only been improved throughout these years.
Ukraine shows longer range needed to avoid drones and bigger shells needed for anti-bunker work, with cheap shells to undercut drones. Given self-propelled auto-loaders remove human handling constraint it seems like should be increasing caliber and shell mass to give substantially more range and bang for buck.
You wont get artillery that can deal with bunkers. The shell size needed is too big and the range too small and/or the gun to easily detected and counter fired. You need projectile speed for penetration which comes best dropped from 40 000 feet.
@@MatsGarage need longer barrel to keep pressures reasonable, but can certainly achieve same muzzle velocity with larger caliber longer shells - and proportionally lower drag losses give much increased range. About 58x caliber barrel length in Paladin SPG gives nearly 50km range - and that would be probably 60-70km in a 200-250mm caliber
Deployment and redeployment takes less then 30 sec ( less then a minute for doing both ). A salvo of 3 rounds takes about 15 sec. So basically you can shoot and scoot in about 70-80 seconds. Also with the MSRI/ Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact, you can hit with the 3 rounds at the same time and be gone before they hit the target.
It can work fast, 2 have been hit in Ukraine, 1 with a lancet munition and 1 with an Iskander strike, the former got away, damaged, the latter probably got destroyed. So 2 out of 8 of the Archers has gotten hit in a bit over a year(sep 23-till now). During that time they have probably completed quite a lot of fire missions.

The majority of Russian weapons are inferior to Nato's however I do believe that Russian artillery is the exception to this rule. The Russian mobile artillery has both longer range and where Nato models only average between 1 to 3 rounds per minute the latest Russian equipment can fire out 7 rounds per minute which is a massive advantage and what's more their both faster and smaller. Russia have always been world leaders in artillery units going back as far as the first world war. The majority of casualties taken in the Ukraine war have been through artillery strikes.
That's just... wrong. Russias most modern howitzer deployed to Ukraine is 2S33 Msta-SM2. A maximum of 10 RPM at a range of 30 km with standard shells and 40 km with V-LAP shells with the 2A79 152 mm/L60 gun. Most modern western howitzer in Ukraine is PZH 2000. First three rounds fire in the first 10 seconds, after that 10 rounds per minute. Same range of 30 km with standard shells but 56 km with V-LAP. And note the PZH 2000 entered service in 1998. It's far from the most advanced western artillery piece. RCH 155 can fire on the move with the same fire rate and range characteristics as PZH 2000. But that's not all. Rheinmetall is currently developing a non-JBMoU-compliant 155 mm L60 gun with larger chamber for a range of 83 km with standard shells for the German Division level Artillery which requested a 75 km range for their new heavy howitzers. That will be 100+ km with V-LAP shells.

You heard no such thing. Also, inland Scandinavia has extremely low humidity and so temperatures feel colder in wetter, windier and coastal elsewhere in the world.

Such a thing I heard indeed, but no matter, just a bit of banter. 😉

@@heycidskyja4668 Boden, where these would normally be stationed are about as far north in Sweden as you can get while still being nearby the coast.
It is not a warm place. The ones driving them there must have seen this as a vacation spot.
@@heycidskyja4668XD, it is painfully obvious you have never experienced temperatures below -10. The amount of humidity in the air is linearly dependent on the temperature. That is why it is measured in % of “relative” humidity. Cold air cannot contain much water, as it condenses and becomes snow above a certain level. Below -20 it is ALWAYS dry. Like a desert. What makes it feel colder is wind. And yes, it is about as windy in Sweden as in the UK.
@@heycidskyja4668 Let's say being a couple of weeks in -30°C or below and sleeping in tents puts every man to test. Hypothermia, frostbites to face and gangrene to toes comes easily if you don't follow a strict routine and take care of youreself, and because you're likely a bit tired being all the time in cold it's easy to forget or ignore some small things. That being said, you're supposed to survive in a sleeping bag only in a tight spot, with some spruce branches as mattress. Wanna try?

The archer did not start it's life as a dump truck.
It is purpouse built for this application, but it is essentially a volvo dumper. It is not a truck, it is an off road capable, all-wheel drive, articulated veichle wich has more in common with an articulted loader.
The gun did not use to be a static gun. It is based on the Bofors FH77 wich is a self-propelled field howitser. With an auto-loader. Probably the world's most advanced field howitzer in it's day.
The FH77 could drive shorter distances by it's own power, but ws ment to be towed longer distances.
The Swedes added the tea capability just for you brits, cheers!
Just a correction, it’s based on Haubits 77 by Bofors. The predecessor was called Bandkanon.
The engine itself is really a tractor dumper so it’s not going to be fast
What is the new British part of it? Tea-capability :)
I know the Swdish army used to have old British tanks in the Cold War ear and everybody was so amazed about the tea-thing. "How could I even remeber that before I had a coffe...".
So you CAN make tea in the Archer. A perfect fit for the British then. 😊
UK MoD procurement (staff of 22,000 btw) can’t organise a gun on a truck so is buying Swedish instead. Outstanding work.
The UK will be getting RCH 155. A joint venture with Germany. Archer is until that enters service.

Shoot and scoot is one of the great features (i.e get inte to position, shoot and get the hell out of that position really fast). "Barrage" shoot (can not remember how many but I think 3 maybe 4?) rounds of before the first one has hit the ground is another good point (i.e reloads pretty fast)...
Excellent bit of kit. Makes me wonder why we don't just buy a lot more of these instead of the Boxer RCH155.
2 types seems odd & maybe the Boxer with the 120mm turretted mortar system could be a better use of those hulls?
Nothing the British do makes much sense.
More or less everything designed by the Swedes is made for territorial defence with the most bang for the buck
Articulation also matters as it's allows for much rougher terrain then what a normal suspension can swallow.
looks a great bit of kit.
We bought 14 guns !!
My father was in the RA at Alamein 2, they fired a lot more than 14 guns!!!

You said 50 km/h. It's said to be able of 70 km/h on hard road. Maybe that's faster than you would like to drive for stability reasons or something so 50 is a more practical top speed, I don't know.
6:05 50km/h no no no. its much higher then that. On nice roads I would guess close to 90km/h Its a frekking Volvo :-) 70km/h is cruise speed on ordinary roads.
70km/h! (It is not a Volvo lorry it is a dump truck (the kind who stears by bending in the middle).)
Yes it can drive pretty fast, but this is mostly aimed for short rushes to get in and out of a hot-zone.
This vehicle is ridiculously back heavy, so would be really painful to drive for long at highway speeds. iNormally it is hauled on flatbed trailers between missions, since that is so much cheaper, both in fuel costs and wear-n-tear.
RWS need bit of a re-paint, don’t you think? Not much of desert environment up in the Arctic circles.
Well it can from driving, stop an fire five 155 mm rounds in different trajectories, hitting target simultainously. Drive away again in a minute 👍
How hardened is it against Lancet drones?
One was hit, was hit in the rear while driving on a road, got damaged but not destroyed. could drive away. One was also hit by an Iskander strike, not sure about the outcome, but it probably got destroyed, or heavily damaged. So 2 of the Archers has gotten hit in little over a year in the war in Ukraine, at least from what we know from reliable sources. I think they arrived in Ukraine in august or september of 2023, at least thats when the first photos and videos started to get published, could have arrived earlier of course, but yeah, first photos and videos started to pop up in late summer/early autumn 2023.

The questio on my mind is how is the Archer's cross-country performance compared to tracked SP Guns. Is it as good?
Yeah is like does big wood cutting machines no problem in the forest.
How many of these weapons does the British Army have?
I think it is 14. But I am happy to be corrected.
😎👍🇸🇪❤🇬🇧
How many do we have ?
About 58x caliber barrel length in Paladin SPG gives nearly 50km range - and that would be probably 60-70km in a 200-250mm caliber
ukraine shows they are of no use.
How many of these are we ordering? 12..?

We have 14 Archer systems while we wait for our newer (domestic) artillery to be delivered.
14 currently, but 40 more (I think) was contracted. The new 40 pieces are of the Archer ver. C (aka. Archer 8x8)

Archer: Sweden's self-loading, rapid-fire artillery system explained. its the same thing
Vice versa ,hes making room for the boxer!
Anyone else see the Volvo A30E 😅
What's the shoot & scoot time? Before the drones find you?
Deployment and redeployment takes less then 30 sec ( less then a minute for doing both ). A salvo of 3 rounds takes about 15 sec. So basically you can shoot and scoot in about 70-80 seconds.
Also with the MSRI/ Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact, you can hit with the 3 rounds at the same time and be gone before they hit the target.
Driving-stoping-shooting 3 shells)-driving off, can be done in about 70 sec. Also driving off before 1st shell hits the ground.
@Alex-oc2vi The one that got damaged by a Lancet was repaired in Poland and has returned to the fight
