To those who have asked how you see out of the head, holes are cut in the eyes (specifically, the black ovals). If you're wondering how easy to see out of the head, here's an article where Michael Fassbender covers says, "It was kind of weird in the beginning, the way it sits on your head. You feel a little bit vulnerable because you've not much peripheral vision. You can only see straight in front of you. You can't hear that well either. But it's quite liberating as well, in the way that masks are. It's amazing how many emotions that face manages to convey. It can look vulnerable, it can look sinister, at times it looks confused."
took me 4 weeks on and off to finish and quite pleased with mine. it by no means perfect but as im not artsy it was never gonna be. 45cm ball ideal size
I'm thinking of making some sort of framework inside the top of the head to keep it in place, like the plastic inserts in the hard hats that builders wear, if you know what I mean?
Covering the gym ball with paper mâché probably isn't the best option cause it's so much more time consuming. If anyone is still making one try covering paper mâché on an extra large balloon. It took me a lot less time to make, you don't need to cover the whole thing with shrink wrap or re-inflate it, and the size is a lot similar to the head in the movie. Hope this helps!
Gary Watson I once made a mask covering papier maché over a party balloon, but by that time it was a way smaller mask. So I wanna ask you: What size of balloon did you use? Thx
I used a punch balloon for mine: the type that has the elastic band tied to the side. You can packs from Amazon for pretty cheap. By the end it was probably about the same size as the head seen in the video. That being said, it took me about 2 and a half weeks or so (because of work etc) to finish the papier maché, but there was no need to deflate/re-inflate anything for a more ovular shape and it turned out great!
The first you need to do before you let the air out the second time is measure your head (all away around) and than near the area where the plug is for the ball draw a lining for the measurement of your head on Frank. Next thing you want to do is release the air and than cut along the line for your head. I found that having the plug being visible during this process to be the best approach to making sure the head sits right on your shoulders. Hope this helps, I know a visual would be more useful, but I didn't film my Frank Head, just took a few pics throughout the build process. Good Luck JakeWebbFilm on your frank head.
Gross that nobody ever gives credit to Chris Sievey for Frank's likeness in general. Frank Sidebottom was the Barney of UK in the 80s/90s. They made him look insane in this movie. Almost everything other than the head has nothing to do with the real Frank Sidebottom, or Chris Sievey, or The Freshies, all of which plays an integral part in how Frank was even created. People, this is what plagiarism looks like lol. I love this movie but hate the fact that they disrespected Chris Sieveys whole existence in retrospect. I am glad he did not have to see that happen to his legacy. To be clear, I love the movie, love the actors, the soundtrack kicks ass, just a douche move to decide to use his head as a premise for this movie. Not surprised but bummed that I am not seeing really anyone mention any of this in the comments.
When you cut the hole in the bottom to stick your head through does the mask wobble? Does it fit ok with the hole for your head? Do you know what I mean? Great job btw!
You don't cut a hole, you just leave that area bare, so don't cover it with paper mache. When the mask is on it does wobble, I'm going to attach the insert from one of those plastic builder's hard hats into mine to keep it on straight. Otherwise it kinda moves around when you move. I'm gonna make a video about it soon. :)
Could someone please help me? I don't understand one part. Once the person deflates the ball... and puts film around the center to add more paper mache... at what point do you remove the ball again? Because I assume you do right? Or else how do you wear it?
how do you see out of this (a) and (b) how do you breathe. curiosity not criticism. great looking head, it's got to be like a sauna in there. don't forget little frank.
Anyone that already did it...does it smell bad inside? i read somewhere that if you mix cinnamon with the glue and water it could help with the smell...

Hi, do you have the article please that he said this? Cheers
Did you put anything inside of it to keep it from moving around too much while wearing it? Thanks!
Making this head will be the death of me it's taken me like a week and half and I'm sooo sick of papier mache, but it's turning out great
+CHauserable haha ok. I'll upload a video of it tomorrow. 👌🏾
This video is so likable.

not too small?
So that's how you create a god..
A demigod . Different from a God .
how does one cut the area for the head to go inside?
With scissors
This is so cool, I'm in the process of making my own. If anyone else is making one or wants to make one I'm happy to help/compare notes!
I've make the basic head but it doesn't balance on my shoulders, any ideas?
I'm thinking of making some sort of framework inside the top of the head to keep it in place, like the plastic inserts in the hard hats that builders wear, if you know what I mean?
+Holly Brookes thats a good idea.
Let me know if it works because I'll be at that stage soon. I'd love to see some pictures if you have any! :)
+Holly Brookes i have aome progress pics, not sure how to show you.
This is pretty awesome. I'll admit I get lost around step 12 (making Frank's hair), great work.
I’m so obsessed with this movie.

Looks amazing! such a cheap method and still looks so good! That's Halloween sorted
I love your wall
Yeah . The wall behind Frank's head is a cool shade of green .
This is fantastic! Thank you so much for making this video!!
A fantastic Fassbender Frank head, well done boss
To those asking, you remove the ball at Step 6 - look in the written instructions in the description.
Интересный косплей получился, пропорции немного не те, но для работы "своими руками" - это очень круто! Лайк :з
Just wanted to say thanks for putting this up, I successfully managed to create me own Frank head for halloween.
How did you get the ball out at the end, and also how did you cut the hole for your head?

In this video used 55 cm (22 inches) gym ball, but in the movie, frank's head was about 30 cm.

How do you wear it then? Do you cut a hole in the ball or what??
You deflate the ball and pull it out
Looks great

@@Briiiightside, great idea. Did you ever u/load a video? I wanna try making one of these, but I have issues with my hands, so may not be able to.
Hat is good idea. Worry about the delicate knock.
There is a DIY low poly pattern of Frank´s head here:

beautiful
AMAZING!!!
I must do this!
Awesome
Fantastic
When did you cut out the second ball??
Do you think you could make it so that the bit that you deflate it with is facing where you'd cut it to make the hole to stick your head in?
Could someone please help me? I don't understand one part. Once the person deflates the ball... and puts film around the center to add more paper mache... at what point do you remove the ball again? Because I assume you do right? Or else how do you wear it?
cutting it in half ?
Step 5-6-7 in discription
How do you cut it for your head? And can you see with it on????
What size was the ball?
Very nice
How big is the gym ball? Can't find any for sale under 55cm.
Wait, wait, wait! DID THE GYM BALL SURVIVE?????!
I'm working on mine right now! i did like 6 layers of paper mache so it would be extra durable. how long should it take to dry?
i'm now in the painting process, and may i ask where can you find peach colored paint??
dang. wish i woulda seen Frank and your video a couple months ago. too late to start on this project :(
What are the dimensions of the mask?
nice
What kind of paint did you use?
What size of pilates ball did you use?
What about cutting out the head? This is my issue in making head masks atm :)
Where do you cut out the eye holes for so you can see out of it?
Why draw a line around the ball and what is a bung??
hi, what paint do you use? is it acrylic?
Shoite film but great tutorial. Thanks for sharing!
I would like to buy that head! Because I don't have enough time until friday to make this :( Pleaaaaseee
I really, really want one but I’m such a terrible artist. 😂
Can I still make the old head by ignoring steps 10 and 12 and making 10 look like his old hair and make 12 look like Frank's cartoony eyes?
Frank sidebottom
how do you see out of this (a) and (b) how do you breathe. curiosity not criticism. great looking head, it's got to be like a sauna in there. don't forget little frank.
How long does it take to make this???
I need the patern for the nose, ears and eyes, i don't wanna have the wrong size. Can anyone share the templates?
I’m willing to buy one at the price of 200 dollars. Since I suck at doing handy works.
Anyone that already did it...does it smell bad inside? i read somewhere that if you mix cinnamon with the glue and water it could help with the smell...
Is it okay if I forget the plastic wrap first?
Are you making one too? I used a punch balloon instead of the gym ball and didn't used plastic wrap and it was fine :)
