spacecraft do not usually take a direct route because in order to save fuel and that sort of thing, they will use other planets to give them a speed boost, and Venus is not always and in fact almost never perfectly aligned with earth between earth and the sun so if the spacecraft used another planet or moon to give it a speed boost and or had to travel farther because Venus was in a different spot in its orbit around the sun, either one or both of these things would have increased the distance traveled
