    The Royal Navy had another underground storage facility at a place called Tracwn near Haverford West. It went under the hills for miles.

    Hi Ant, thanks for the tour, 40 years since we were there, the narrow gauge tunnel would have been single track as the wagons were much wider than the track. RAF Fauld is similar to this place but sadly all entrances are now buried.. Oh and there was no graffiti or plastic bottles in these places but there were various wagons with steel wheels/chassis with wooden tops and drop down sides...great explores back then as well as today. Thankyou..

    We used to go there on our motorbikes in the early 1960's for the Dragon Rally. There were hundreds of bikers camping there for the weekend, and there was a headlight parade over the tops when it had got dark. There were a number of surface buildings still standing from what I remember - I recall one with those big ablutionary circular hand-washing fittings. I still have the commemorative enamel badges that we were given on arrival, a different design for each separate year.

    They say the mod dumped lots of bombs in that quarry as the yellow door’d tunnel links to it. It cost them a hefty amount in the 60/70’s to clear it out. Hope they found them all..

    My my mate took me there yesterday. I only live 7 miles away and I had no idea this place ever existed until he told me about it.
    I've been walking around Padarn lake for years and had no idea that I'd been passing one of the tunnels that went right under the main road and came out right next to the public toilets at the start of the old railway track next to the lake.
    That's where they'd load the bombs back in the day onto train wagons which is now a scenic footpath along the side of the lake.
    I lost my mate and had no idea where we parked the van.
    I got chatting to a security guard who told me they blocked the tunnels after they had a rave there back in the 90's. How I missed that rave I do not know. 🤔

  • @MrRnipperBrockleBroadcasting
    @MrRnipperBrockleBroadcasting 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The narrow and standard gauge tunnels you first explore go under the road to where the rail transfer sidings used to be alongside the lake. I believe they were partly backfilled with builders rubble back end of the 20th century. The brick linings to the arches were part of the reconstruction and stabilisation after the collapse and when there was still an intention to try and use the depot. The steps apparently led to wooden offices as you speculated. The lift was I believe bomb lift 2, lift 3 also survived, lift 1 was in the collapsed area. I think the quarry you explore towards the end may have been the route that was used to extract all the bombs from the collapsed area - these all had to come out along the escape tunnel and were then lifted 100ft to the surface by crane.

  • @sparkyprojects
    @sparkyprojects 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The narrow gauge was probably part of the original slate mine that may have been repurposed. the tunnel on the other side of the door looks like the mine.

  • @MrRnipperBrockleBroadcasting

    A fine example of what can happen when government bureaucrats impose cost and design cuts on a project- the builders were told to use less cement so the upper level floor was thinner than it should have been, there were initially two standard gauge sidings requiring wider and thus weaker arched passages, and there was a lack of skilled labour so many of the load bearing walls didn’t line up between the upper and lower levels creating shear stresses, add 100,000 tons of overburden and this is what you get!

  • @thewhiteroom23
    @thewhiteroom23 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was very interesting. Some of that graffiti though...it makes you wonder why they bother!
    Also Welsh place names you usually emphasise on the second syllable so the Ber in Llanberis sounds like the Ber in berry.
