We bought some land back in 1989 that had planning permission for a double bungalow. As we were building It the lands previous owner turned up and offered the 9 fields around it which totalled 114 acres and we spent three years after we finished the house clearing and improving the fields and it was hard work but got there. Like you the shanty sheds in two of them and two old railway box bodies were just full of junk Then 7 years ago the same land owner came knocking on the door asking if we would like to buy the fields on the other side of the road as his son was not interested in farming as he was retiring. We agreed a deal and purchased but only started using it about three years ago. We decided to turn over an acre to pick your own veg on a small scale and probably the best thing we have bought to get around and make light work of moving stuff around was our Honda pioneer utv and trailer Tools. Seeds, Plants Rubbish, fencing etc all made easy. Good luck with the project it will be great to follow your progress as I enjoy your vids but as you probably already know there will be plenty of advice flying around but enjoy the project sir.
@@thomaspako what we paid in total for the two blocks of land would today probably cost us fifty times as much. We had known the owner for life and to be fair we got a deal that was way under value and we did offer the going rate. We helped him for free after he lost his wife many years before and I think he appreciated it in his offers. He retired and said he was going to Canada and visited about 18 months ago happy again with life as he had met another lady. His lad is a family friend and they both appreciate how we have developed and managed the site. We were lucky being in the right place and helping him through his loss and we appreciate what we have. Its hard work but rewarding.

Hard work's my second name, my friends can't understand that I relax while doing stuff, everyone nowadays assumes that relaxing is only achievable in a pub or in front o tv. Just an idea for when you start doing videos on your work on the land. What would be great to give context to the viewers is an aerial map (even sketched), showing where you are working and what you are intending to do. That way over time people can see how much you've changed it. Just a thought. Keep up the good work!
If you're looking at getting a small excavator to level the land, it would be good to use it to clear your brambles first and put them on an area you won't need to disturb to mulch later. You could move the junk in the stables/barn to a closer location with the aid of the old trailer and using the excavator to pull it along to save on manual handling and even use it to load the skip. If your ground isn't too firm, a skid steer loader with a 4 in 1 bucket would be ideal for moving the junk and levelling out.
Congrats. Very jealous. Looks bigger than 0.5 acre. Your land is probably home to many animals. You could prune back the brambles, but leave a section for all that wildlife, around you border. Makes a good fence too, to keep out farm animals grazing on the other side. Excellent videos.
Congratulations on your purchase and on the matter of the car parts and stuff some of that is rare and would be sought after as I know from being in to old cars I suggest you could sell it as a job lot to some autjumbler or some one in the older car scene you could enquire and ask local vintage or classic car club with some roofing those sheds come back best luck

We have done something similar and once we cleared it and opened a bit of fencing we had planning enforcement tell us we needed to apply for full planning for change of use from agricultural to residential. Ball ache and lots of rules and regs about what you can do (and largely can’t do with agricultural land). Even re putting up a shed etc. Good luck
Oh how I envy you. I bought a similar plot at my last house, but where you’re looking to grow stuff I put in a hen house and 3 goats! Get your fencing sorted and they’ll do the rest!
An excellent purchase. Very interesting plot of land. I can see many hours being spent on there. Surely you can now justify the purchase of a small tractor with a modest trailor to assist in the clean up, levelling and reworking of the land. Please do get ITS to send you a couple of free hard hats when working in the sheds. I was wincing watching you dodge the collapsing iron roofs! Best of luck with the project. Proper project! I would recommend an Oregon mulching blade for your brushcutter, it will make mincemeat of those brambles. Look forward to seeing how you develop this space, perhaps a large compost bay similar to Charles Dowding? You’ll definitely have plenty of material to fill it!
What a great opportunity. I'm interested to see how you will tackle this - I'd be inclined to get a Bobcat in there to clear the entire lot and make a clean slate to build from.
Make sure you check with the local planning authority what the use of the land is currently allocated for in land use terms. Don't fall into the trap that many people do of assuming it can be used as a garden.

Plant fruit trees first as it will be years before they fruit? Make compost heaps, then start the raised beds unless you plan on planting fruit bushes. Birdy

I've dealt with a lot of brambles and that established growth looks super dense - don't underestimate it! I'd get as many friends and family as possible to help get stuck into that!
A great longer term project. The uneven field pattern could be Ridge & Furrow or as it is known in my part of the country Rigg & Furrow which is an archaeological feature created in the middle ages & onwards to increase surface area and create natural drainage. Someone has already mentioned goats as a great way to clear the brambles. Look forward to seeing your progress.
Congratulations on your purchase... i guess with all car parts there has to be vehicles access? Can I suggest you have a chat to some local farmers sho could get a 10ton trailer in there for you to fill up... some farmers where I live will dispose of some materials in holes they need filling. You may even be able to offer some of the old farm machinery as part payment... Could work out cheaper and a lot easier then a load of skips...

Congrats. You could definitely justify getting yourself something like a kubota compact tractor or similar. Lots of uses for it on a piece of land like that. Digging and moving earth, regrading, carrying stuff around etc!!
Stuart you could do like our neighbour use the mini digger to clear the brambles whilst you try to level the plot. Probably much easier than using brush cutter. Also per other comment check that you have permission to use plot as garden

You're going to be a busy bunny! Might I suggest either a large (15hk minimum) lawn tractor/mower. You will save your legs and back clearing that plot. We have one and even though our garden is more manageable now I still use it and a small trailer for clearing/moving projects.
I have 2.5 acres with with about 0.5 of an acre fully overgrown with brambles & hawthorn & goat willow etc all over. I cleared it with a Titan brushcutter from Screwfix and a second hand ride on mower. Cut the overgrowth with the brushcutter and loppers and then over run it with the mower (checking for any rocks or lumps of metal first). At least the land will then be cleared and you can then see what other leveling is needed with a JCB or similar farmer's tools!! . Good luck with the extra land -- you will need some big boys toys to keep it up.
Amazing purchase. Well done. I look forward to many videos developing the land. I you piqued my interest when you said you are a fan of no dig planting. If you already haven't, have a look at videos on YT by "Gabe Brown" he does a lot of "no till farming". Some of those furrows in the earth may also be repurposed for water management and capture. Gabe also talks about his use of them and how to naturally build the soil. Really excited for you.

Creating vehicle access to your new land from your garden would be advantageous. Estate gates in rear fence would look tidy but open up to allow equipment through (minimum clear width of either 2.5 meters or 3.2 meters depending on including skip lorrys or not). You might find it useful to hire machines occasionally too; standard width field machines are more efficient than the narrow 'garden' type.
Well done, it was worth buying this for the 'free' car trailer 😉 building a log store and sorting all that wood is the first job I'd do. Then,honestly, i'd get professionals in to clear all the sheds away

put in some large ponds for wildlife, bat boxes and boxes for barn owls. Don't burn the wood. Use it for habitat piles. See what trees and fruit you have on your new land. Freecycle and Olio are great for giving away materials you don't need.

I you piqued my interest when you said you are a fan of no dig planting. If you already haven't, have a look at videos on YT by "Gabe Brown" he does a lot of "no till farming".
Some of those furrows in the earth may also be repurposed for water management and capture. Gabe also talks about his use of them and how to naturally build the soil.

Creating vehicle access to your new land from your garden would be advantageous. Estate gates in rear fence would look tidy but open up to allow equipment through (minimum clear width of either 2.5 meters or 3.2 meters depending on including skip lorrys or not). You might find it useful to hire machines occasionally too; standard width field machines are more efficient than the narrow 'garden' type.

i dont envy you, thats a lot of backbreaking work there dude. lots of spiky brambles always a bonus.
put in some large ponds for wildlife, bat boxes and boxes for barn owls. Don't burn the wood. Use it for habitat piles. See what trees and fruit you have on your new land. Freecycle and Olio are great for giving away materials you don't need.
