    ***Stuff that didn't make it into the video***
    1. If you have bass heavy speakers (like Buchardt S400) you may need one of the larger models. It didn't sound bad with the T5i, they just didn't add much to the experience as the S400 already has a very full sound on it's own.
    2. Fun Fact: this video was filmed at 2:30am and took 26 takes lol.
    3. Ya'll asked for louder volume, this is about as loud as I can get before it sounds like crap, I am using a $200 mic and I'm not willing to spend more honestly. More money spent on mic means less money to buy speakers & subs with lol.

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davybloggs1564 Hey Davy, so in America when we say HP it's the same as when you guys say BHP which is horsepower measured at the engines crankshaft and without any drivetrain loses. When we say WHP (wheel horsepower) that's the cars horsepower when measured at the wheels on something like a dynojet which takes into account drivetrain losses (power after it goes through the transmission, differentials, axles, etc...) in the neighborhood of -10-20% depending on the car. Example: my old turbo civic made 420whp or roughly 500bhp.

      @@NemoPropaganda hooked up my REL T5 and a T5i up with the Magnepan LRS today. Best positioning was of course directly behind the LRS. Was getting some very weird maybe grounding feedback loops that had me very concerned on the phono stage. Maybe it was subsonic effects. Don't seem to be getting the same effect with the Nakamichi ZX9. Called REL and they said leave the black not attached to the amp which seemed a bit odd but one way to avoid grounding loops is to just not ground right? Bryston 4BSST banana z plugs wrapped the hi level red and yellow to plus and the black to the black. Still not certain I am getting some odd ground effect but stinking phono stage is a grounding bummer maybe even walking around makes it bounce and comes out of the RELs. Anyway can't even see the subs behind the LRS and the sound seems integrated and a plus over no subs. Crossover at noon and volume at 11 AM. Carry on.

      Honestly it's been kinda tough so I appreciate the encouragement. The reality is these brands all do certain things really well. Like just being a 100% honest here, if I had a large space say 20x24 ft I probably would have kept my SB-3000, not many subs in that size and price play that clean that loud. The T5i pair as much as I love them could not fill a space so large so anyway my biggest hope is that people watching understand these things and that it's not just a "shootout" of which is the best ya know what I mean?

      @@duythai5442 I did that, I just didn't use a miniDSP and you don't need to either as long as you can dial in the phase which I was able to. • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wa2368 Yes and no. So I listen at very low volumes (75db) so the benefit of the L12 wouldn't be seen a whole lot vs the T5i and instead the T5i's benefit of being smaller and more nimble would reign supreme. But if I used that room for theater duty (or just louder music) for example at reference levels absolutely the pair of L12 would have a serious advantage over the smaller T5i by direct comparison. At some point size matters plain and simple.

    Great review and observations. I do want you to know that by pure accident that I discovered that there is a way to run two mono block amps off of one Rel subwoofer. This is how this happened, I had a AudioResearch stereo amp and one Vandersteen speaker that I sent in for service from the dealer that I purchased them from. I was loaned out two SimAudio 400m monoblocks, a pair of Kef Ls50s and a Rel 328, which is a demo unit that they use just for people in my particular situation. I didn’t want to connect the Rel after reading what Rel had said on their website and I didn’t for about a week. My dealer has been a Rel Dealer for over 10 years.
    I went back to the dealer and told him what Rel said and he stated that it can be done and he understands why Rel said this due to hum and other issues that could arise. My dealer went upstairs and made a cable soldered to an RCA jack and he told me to connect the positive wires red and yellow to the positives ends on both amps and connect the RCA jack with the black wire that they created and attach it to the black Rel wire, which is the ground and use both ground wires together with a wire nut. My dealer said to plug the new created rca jack to the rca input on just one of the amps. I have my amps connected through the XLR outs.
    My Dealer said that current is only running through the two positive wires to the sub and the black wires (ground) and the rca adapter is now grounded to the chassis and their will be no hum. I tried this and it works beautifully and I have had it running for two weeks. I will be buying the Simaudio 400m and I will be trading in my Audio Research amp when it comes back from Audio Research. The 400ms are fantastic and is trickle down technology from their Evolution series, which quite frankly (the evolution series) is just on another level and competes favorably with darn near every thing on the market.

      Thank's Seoul! I've been meaning to start adding the flash comments but couldn't find an app that made it easy enough, I finally found one though :D. I don't know if I'll buy a pair but I will say at the lower volumes I enjoy my music these have been the best so far. A lot of gear has a "sweet spot" where they sound their best and the T5i sweet spot seems to be right at my preferred listening volume but I didn't want to talk about that in the video as we're really starting to get personal here and splitting hairs lol.

    What’s up Nemo, I just ordered the SE8. I noticed that these two are actually pretty comparable, with the active downfiring and passive front. And the emotiva has a 200W class D. How would you say these compare? Thanks

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the T5i doesn't have a passive, it's a sealed 8" only. So we have to remember you can literally buy 2 SE8 for the price of 1 T5i, that's a huge price difference. The SE8 is what I consider one of the best values in subwoofers today and I absolutely love it. With that said at double the price while the T5i can't play as loud but it will extend a bit further, integrate a bit better, and have better SQ overall. But again, double the price so that is to be expected :).

      Hey Chai, if you can only fit 1 sub the extra headroom of the 7x will be great but if you're going duals I dont think you need to spend the extra money on the 7x and the the T5x pair would be the wiser choice :)

      @@NemoPropaganda Damn. I just saw this comment. You know...A guy on RELs fan page mentioned to me doing something similar. He said to:
      "Get 2 bare RCA plugs, connect the black wire to the outer shell terminal alone. Plug the RCA plugs into an unused RCA input on your preamp. This will give you a connection to signal ground. The case of the amp is not signal ground, it is most often between 10 and 100 ohms above signal ground. This will be the quietest."
      "no, I am suggesting that you solder the black wire to the inside of the RCA plug (to the outer shell which is the signal ground). If you are unsure then check out TH-cam for how to solder an RCA plug."
      You think they are talking about the same thing? Sounds very similar except the comment you pasted suggested combining all three wires. So basically...solder some basic whatever guage copper wire to the inside shell of a rca plug and twist the other end to the black wire on rels cable? Lol...I assume this is safe and the only reason REL doesn't bring it up because there would be a lot people out here that would read that or watch one of their videos and say f*ck all this... and just move on to something a little less complex.

    Very solid and helpful reviews, thank you for sharing your experiences and especially comparisions among tested speakers. I would appreciate your advice - if you would have to choose 1 sub for cca $600 for small room and low to medium loudness, 80% music, 20% movies: T5i or SB1000 pro? Both have high level inputs, both are small and nice (gloss if you want) but SVS has few advantages on paper: significantly larger surface (12 vs. 8 inch), so plays deeper, front firing woofer (better for neighbours?), fully adjustable phase (0-180 °) and probably main advatage - DSP with app. Can all these advantages integrate SB1000 pro even better than T5i? Would T5i still "win" with better bass texture/resolution despite maybe non-optimal phase and without DSP corrections?

    • @NemoPropaganda

      If you can only have 1 then SVS SB-1000 pro. I like the REL T5i but most of my love comes from using 2 of them. 1 is still good but 1 SVS SB-1000 is better. If it was 2 vs 2 then I would choose the T5i. But not 1 vs 1. I can't answer for integration as I have not tested the SB1000 Pro yet.

I read a lot about acoustics in past year or two and learned also that DSP may help with standing wave issues, of course only for the seating position and only for peaks and much less for cancelations... So subs with DSP may justify the use of single unit... but of course they still cannot compete with the 2-subs setup.

The big question I have is while sub frequencies are generally through of as being non-directional, going from the T-5 to a T7, you go from down firing to a front firing. In two channel listening only, will I sense a noticeable difference between a down firing vs. a front firing - difference in sound stage imaging, etc.?

      @NemoPropaganda  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Roger is correct! Anyhow, bass loads a room overall while orientation can play a role, that will depend on the room. Also bass is directional. Many people get this wrong. The correct saying should be "bass is not as directional as higher frequencies" and I will admit in some rooms you can place the sub in a great way in which it may truly be non-directional but most rooms you can tell where the sub is. Especially if the placement is bad.

      @@NemoPropaganda Thanks for your reply. I realize its hard to speculate how something will compare if you don't A/B test it. I'll ask my question differently. I do understand that subs require setup and proper positioning in a room to sound their best and to blend with the two speakers. If one was to (a) first setup a down-firing T5 in the same room so that it sounds its best, and next remove the T5s and setup a set of Front-firing T7 in the same room but positioned and configured to sound its "best" ( which means that they may end up being in different locations) , both are listened to with the same tracks at the same volume.. which will sound better? or will they just sound different? The proper test naturally would be between two subs one down firing, the other front firing, both with the same size cone and same amp power rating but with Rel we don't have that option.. in fact the new Rels have a front firing active and passive radiator in the bottom..

    • @NemoPropaganda

    Just some thoughts on some topics you mentioned. I am by no means an expert, but I have some speaker building textbook knowledge^^
    - on Watts: I think the amount of Wattage is extremely mislead by marketing strategy. Also, because there is no consistent way how amplifiers are measured. But for bass especially, the most important factor is the amplifiers ability to deliver and control large amounts of current. You see some highly rated digital amplifiers that fall apart when bass extends below 40 Hz. Rel appears to design pretty powerful amplifiers.
    - on bass extension: I guess since the T5i is a sealed design, it's roll - off below the -3dB point is pretty smooth. Taking into account room gain you, sub 30Hz frequencies from a pair of these is very much possible.
    Anyways, nice video as always!

      Monoblock users must use 2 REL subwoofers if connecting via high level. Twist red/yellow together and connect to positive speaker post (on back of amplifier or speaker) black wire goes to negative speaker terminal (on back of amplifier or speaker). You do this for each left and right subwoofer respectively. If using a different brand of monoblock call REL as they're not all the same, but this is the way to do it with Kinki and I confirmed with both REL and Kinki as the global Kinki distributor also uses REL subwoofer for his personal system.

    Am I correct here, please?
    Run my speakers full range from my integrated amp when listening in stereo by turning off the LFE (front speakers now set to Large in menu) and using the hi-inputs on the subs from the speaker outs of the integrated amp. That way, the subs will only receive a hi-level signal.
    When using the AVR for movies, the L&R preouts are going from my AVR to my integrated which is switched to Bypass. That way, the LFE is still going to the sub from the AVR.
    Does this mean that the main speakers will always be set to Large for music and movies? My speakers are set to 80HZ when watching movies. Won't everything below the 80Hz crossover be sent to the sub from the AVR and also to the integrated? In other words, the sub will receive an 80Hz signal in its LFE input and its Hi-input unless I keep the L&R fronts set to Large all the time.

Now regarding the T5i and 608 they most likely have similar maximum output, both have great textures and bass detail but the 608 looks like a cheap little box compared to the refined fit and finish of the t5i. In short I still recommend the 608 on the used market where it can be found for around $200-$265 but at full MSRP of $500 the value proposition is simply not there.

Yeah corner placement will get you the most SPL and deep bass so it's a great place to start but some rooms have stronger bass like yours (and mine) so for us as much as 1/3 into the room along the front wall will give us a smoother response and better integration while still having great SPL & extension :D. Basically your intuition was spot on!

      How big is your room? I also own elac ubr 62 and would like to fill the sound a bit more and give my system a bit more extension. I don't need much as i don't usually listen to heavy bass music and i live in an apartment and don't want to upset the neighbours. Also i only listen to low to moderate levels. I'd say my room is around 16x16 feet. Do you think i could get away with only 1 t5i maybe placed into a corner?

      can you maybe, some day, maybe. in the future, after the kef subwoofers, could you maybe make a video explaining your view, and your findings about one subwoofer versus 2 of them? like comparing a big one 12", versus double 8" or 10". Just really about the sound differences, if it's worth it or not. advantages of double subwoofers giving less problems. pro's and cons really since you know so much about the topic, after your actual experience about it. Many of us wonder about this, already have a good 1 sub, would be good to hear from an expert if it would be worth it two of them or not. thanks again.

      @@exodusvelo So that's a little bit difficult because I don't believe in iron clad rules for a hobby. It would really come down to which 2 vs which 1 subwoofer it was. Like if it was 2 Polk PSW10 vs 1 Emotiva SE8 I would rather have the 1 Emotiva SE8 but if it was between two SVS SB-2000 vs 1 SVS SB-4000 I would rather have the dual SVS SB-2000. @NemoPropaganda  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How big is your room my bro and how loud do you like it? The 1205 will give you more extension (even 1 1205 vs 2 t5i) so that's something to consider. The T5i pair overall have better SQ for sure but you're giving up headroom and some low end extension vs the single 1205. For me the trade off is wroth it, but if I had a larger room I'd stick with the 1205 or even a pair of 1003 instead. The good news is REL seems to hold it's value on the used market so while you might take a small loss if you decide to sell later you can recover a good amount :).

    Seeing those Aria's really makes me wonder how the Sub 1000F is from Focal. I understand that it is probably overpriced and I also completely understand the subwoofer communities push for ID subs, but they also only ever seem to care about specs.
