    With all due respect to Willie Mays, that diving over-the-shoulder catch at 0:05 is the best catch/outfield play I have ever seen. I've been watching Bball since 1970. Edmonds was the highlight reel of my day. Should be in Hall of Fame.

    I was disappointed that Jim wasn’t able to win a World Series with the Angels in 2002, but was very happy he finally became a champion in 2006 with the Cardinals. Jim was a class act and a wonderful ambassador for baseball during the years he played.

      The Angels were only going to pay one of these 2 - Edmonds or Garrett Anderson. Their front office really believed Anderson was the better player so they let Edmonds go, one of the most bone headed decisions the Angels ever made.

      Cannot believe he was a one and done in the HOF voting. The BBWAA really dropped the ball on this one. This could be one of those rare instances where the Veterans Committee has to correct an oversight by the Baseball Writers. Jim was the whole package, tremendous fielder, excellent hitter too. If I were a manager, I would want a lineup full of players like Jim Edmonds!

      According to Baseball Reference, Jim was one of the top 100 non pitchers of all time. Out of almost 20,000 MLB players. Roughly speaking, easily in the top 1%. Better than several members of the HOF. Bill James has said that the kinds of players who get overlooked by the Baseball Writers are the guys who are good at everything but not necessarily the best at anything. That's Jim Edmonds. Was he the very best fielder in baseball, the one preventing the most opposing runs from scoring? Maybe not, but he was certainly on the list of candidates. Was he the best hitter, driving in the most runs? No, but he was very good, clearly way better than the average hitter. A manager would love to have Jim Edmonds in the lineup, he helped the team win a lot of games with both his bat and glove.

      @civilwarwasaninsidejob7405 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@juliebraden6911WAR actually hurts Edmonds, as it weighs more heavily towards offense than defense. If WAR could effectively indicate impact on defense, Jim would be even higher. His ability to get a read and jump on any ball allowed him to play much more shallow than most centerfielders. This in teun allowed him to catch a lot of balls that would normally be singles, while also being able to hold up base runners. This stuff doesn't show up on the stat sheet. He's without a doubt up there with current hall of famers. Whether you think he is or he isn't, there's lesser players currently in the hall.

    • @moeball740
      @moeball740 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wins Above Average (WAA) is a better measure of just how good Jim Edmonds was. Per Baseball Reference, Jim finished with 35 WAA, inside the top 100 all time for non pitchers. That's easily in the top 1% of players all time, I would think that would clearly qualify for HOF induction. But the BBWAA didn't think so, in fact, many writers to this day are still pushing the idea that Jim was overrated as a fielder, that he often got a poor jump on the ball which led to it looking like he would have to make a great diving catch when he really should have gotten to the ball easily. Not saying I agree with this view, but it's definitely out there among the writers.

The first catch in this video is the greatest catch ever made in the history of the sport due to the fact that there is a split second where he isn’t even able to see the ball on account of how he had to leap at full speed with his body parallel to the ground before the ball , which I can’t stress this enough HE COULDNT EVEN SEE 😳😭 , hit his glove … up there with devon white , mays , andruw jones as best defensive centerfielder ever

    should be in the hof for his defense alone, yet he had a 903 ops. Thats more that scott rolen, nolan arenado, freddie freeman, manny machado, miguel cabrera, adrian beltre, carlos beltran, and paul goldschmidt. all of which are deserving hofers. just to compare to the recently added hofer scott rolen, who is 100% a hofer, edmonds had about 100 less hits, but almost 100 more hrs, 50 points higher ops, and the same amount of ss (1) and gg (8) as rolen but at a more premium position. I don't like using position as a way to say someone is better, you need a person at every position on the field, but I just bring it up to showcase the hypocrisy. there are plenty of players who got snubbed by the vote spreading from the insane ballets from that era, and a little bit from steroid users, but no one is more snubbed to me that jim edmonds. maybe lance berkman was close to as snubbed.
    (fun little statistic) the most homer runs from a centerfielder: Willie Mays (660), Ken Griffey Jr (563), Mickey Mantle (464), Jim Edmonds (388), and Mike Trout (373). yeah trout will pass edmonds up but still 4th-5th most hrs from the centerfield position of all time. so hof caliber. also amazing that all of willie's hrs came from playing centerfield.

      @Pensfan5919 Trevor Hoffman WAR is only 19th among relief pitchers despite the long career. 39th best prime per WAR7. He's behind better players/non Hall members like Kerry Wood and Joe Nathan
