Started tying these years ago in a multitude of color versions and to this day is a killer fly wherever sculpin lurk 👀 also works good when you swing them . Thanks for the video

Mr. Craven, I’ve been fly tying 57 years, and enjoy it immensely. This is a very cool fly; it reminds me of the stuff Kelly Gallup ties. I am impressed that you use the folding technique to anchor your materials: especially folding the backing line through the hook eye and anchoring under the fly to balance the thorax. I have a couple of questions: have you tried using the flexible toothy critter wire instead of the backing material to attach the rear hook, have you attempted to lash the zonker strip at the halfway mark to the backing line, have you tried attaching a weed guard to the hook, have you left the front hook intact or tried a smaller hook to avoid fouling? The addition of eyes and the red hackle imitating gills makes a huge difference in generating a strike. A wonderful video, would you be willing to teach the rest of us slugs some pointers on how to make tying and fishing videos? Thanks for your tutelage, Bill from frozen Mn.

Beautiful pattern! Im gonna make an upright hook variant and use a 90 degree ballhead jig shank for the body and turn it into a twitching jig.

trick I do for the cone is I slide a bead inside it. I find you use way less thread and time just have to make it so bead can't move. I really like the way you ran the backing for trailor back thrue the eye and tied off under as well not sure why I never thought of that lol. thanks love that fly

What an awesome pattern. I can't wait to give it a try. Gotta find my stash of cheap SW hooks. :)

Outstanding! Thanks! (additional comment) I was wrapping up a few of these recently. On one of them, my thread kept "breaking" as I was doing the final wraps behind the crosseyed cone. I finally switched from UTC Ultra 140 to Danville 210, although I didn't think I was reefing too hard on the 140. Once again, SNAP! My genius brain finally figured out that there was a place on the back edge of the cone that was quite sharp. I wasn't breaking thread. I was cutting it! Live and learn!

Why don't you want the front hook?

Why not use a shank in front? Good looking fly!

Does the cut hook end get filed? How do we keep it from serrating the 20# backing when the trailer is flopping around?

How about versions with the flat sculpin weight head?
