  • This week I took my first trip up north in my new (to me) vintage truck camper. But, what seemed like a successful first trip turned scary and we had to leave before night fell.

I personally think you were smart to leave. Even though he may have meant no harm there is always that "what if". I am a 63 year old man who also has a truck camper and even though I wouldn't hurt a fly I always wait for others to approach me. I never invade others space. And I I never show all my cards. You did the right thing.

I am a 67 year old woman and I would NEVER, EVER drive into another person's site ... maybe if I was hurt and needed help ... but still more likely to stop outside the site and yell for help. I think your instincts/intuition were appropriate. I do get that the aftermath would be disconcerting: combination of adrenalin, disappointment, anxiety and ??? Bob Wells (CheapRVLiving) recently posted a video on Intuition. He cites that there is scientific backup for how all of our senses and brain and entire body receive input and give us messages as well as what I call that "little voice" that gives direction as well as the "fight or flight" response.

Definitely the right choice. His intention may well have been good but as a male I would definitely know that approaching a woman who is travelling alone is a weird thing to do and would definitely make her feel uncomfortable. I would definitely steer clear unless I was asked for help.

You never go wrong by reducing risk. I'm an older guy too, like some others have commented I'd never just roll into someones camp like that. I mean its just rude at best. Not that there cannot be good reasons, but he didn't give any good reason. Even in my years in Wilderness SAR when I needed to approach a camp to ask if the campers had seen a missing person, I'd announce myself at a little distance first. It's just a simple matter of politeness and respecting people's need for a bit of space around them.

  • @tracyhickok

You did the right thing Alex. From the second he drove up I was uneasy and personally I would have been scared in that situation. This is the main reason I'm so afraid to go out alone without my husband or a friend. I think whenever a situation like that happens, which I hope it never happens again to you, I'd get their faces on video if you can. You just never know. The world we live in now is just crazy and so unpredictable and quite honestly so are a lot of the people. I wish it wasn't that way because there are so many things that I want to do and I'm scared to do because I would need to do them by myself. I can work remotely but unfortunately my husband can't and only gets so much time for vacation per year. I love your videos and your attitude with life and everything you experience. I do have to say that when I am out I do carry a weapon. I have a concealed carry in the state that I live and it is recognized in certain States. For those states that it's not I know there is a federal law that somewhat protects you. In my eyes I'd rather be safe and feel safe and if the event ever arises I would need to use that to protect myself I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6. Just my opinion but I think it's awful we just can't respect each other's privacy and space. You 100% did the right thing. I hope you're feeling better and those feelings have gone away and you are enjoying yourself again! Stay safe girl!

    • @brucehalleran1149
      @brucehalleran1149 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

There is an organization, USConcealed Carry Association that offers training on how to safely and legally handle possible armed situations. They might offer you some peace of mind, and better odds if you are "judged by twelve". Might also improve the odds of the big scary guy with the beard (me) not being "carried by six".

If you for some reason decide to get another dog friend for Tara, get a German Shepherd. They are super sweet dogs (always some exceptions), playful, smart, and protective. They intimidate a lot of people just by their presence.
You were smart to follow your instincts. If the dude was deer hunting, dusk should have been the time he was on his feet, not in his truck.

I work alone in the woods. It can be unnerving when people come into my camp. I am more worried about theft than personal safety . Been robbed multiple times
It really sucks you have to worry about things like that.
If I did see someone camped near me I might stop in just to let them know I am nearby, so hopefully he was just trying to be neighbourly.

you did exact the right thing to leave this place. I can tell you that i. my past I had just this (negative) experience. I was crossing the Sahara and I fortunately legt my spot for overnight when such a guy came to ask me some stupid questions. I changed for a few miles my spot. In the middle of the night I saw headlights lightning my first spot. This saved my life. They wanted to steal my truck.....

I am so glad that you left that campsite. I was getting anxious listening to his conversation with you. My first instinct was to get out of there as soon as possible. He may have been sizing up your situation to see how easy or difficult a prey you might be and also checking out how your dog might react to him. It really just gave me the creeps. Always, always trust your instincts. Another thing to be careful of is how close you were to his truck while you were talking to him. You want to keep as far back as you can. Getting too close gives him the opportunity to grab you and pull you into his vehicle.

Embracing solitude requires a special bond with loneliness, not being alone. Becoming a hermit on the other hand is pretty much a dream, a small cabin in the woods, maybe four Mastiffs and a gun... Yeah! Anytime. And to get to know the outside world once in a while. Where do I sign in? In Spanish we have a saying: " Don't search for the cat's fifth leg". Good call for leaving. Stay safe and well. ¡¡Pura Vida!!.... And those frozen patterns on the truck..... Absolutely, you were right to move. You need to follow your gut, particularly where your personal safety is concerned. The cynic in me says this stranger rolled up to you to ascertain if you were alone or had someone else with you. I live in this part of Idaho and we are friendly and neighborly. Unfortunately, these days, you just never know anymore. My best advice to you, young lady, is to arm yourself. Concealed Weapons Permits (CWP's) are really easy to obtain here in Idaho, and you shouldn't have any problem getting one here. The best part is, MOST states that surround us have reciprocity in recognizing an Idaho CWP. You'll sleep a lot better at night, as you well should. Good luck, and be safe out there! Oh, and you have a great channel!

@@mikegupguthrie-futurenomad7866 I actually just dropped a video today but I’m sure all y’all didn’t get any notices of my last two videos. TH-cam is punishing me for not dropping vids consistently. It’s pretty discouraging, honestly. My last two vids have ranked in the lowest viewed vids so far.
Also, yes. This lady is much easier on the eyes than my bald ass 😂

@@downbytheriver501 saw your vid that dropped today and not sure if I got notice of last month and the month before vids or not, but did see them. Sucks your last two were ranked so low. That’s a bummer YT is punishing you for not dropping consistently. Not sure which mug is spookier, your bald ass or Kenny’s hairy ass lol.

You need to install a Chy Knees diesel heater. I thought part of being Nomadic was South for the winter, North for the Summer? For sure, learning outdoor extreme condition survival skills and self sufficientcy with the bare basics is always great skills to have.

I do not blame you for leaving, that guy creeped me out too. When he started asking you questions I was just so glad that you had Tera with you....she is a game changer since you are a solo female.

You were right to leave. I was solo camping in a state campground with others around but farther away from me when someone stopped to ask why I had a name tag on my site but he didn't and he was staying for like a week. I asked where he was staying in the campground, he told me but when I drove down to get water from the natural spring, he was indeed not there camping. I left a day early because I felt sick and uncomfortable. You did the right thing. You just never know.

7 years full time here preferring way off grid traveling and living. Respect the vibe. You did good. Don't let it spoil your journey. ❤ Even men, per a solo fellow that I know, have had issues with fear of being robbed, etc. in the same situation. Yes, not being able to be your trusting self is so sad but so true.

Although he was probably just a lonely an harmless old man you did the right thing. All solo female travelers should make the same exact choice you made. You may want to put a rush on your build if you do plan to continue fall/winter camping much longer. Even though living off the land with the bare minimum is a nice experience you an Tara do need heat. I LOVE your camper. I've always wanted a fiberglass camper. I got 3 kiddos so I've gotta look for something a little bigger lol love your channel BTW. Safe travels an best wishes.
Ohhh I almost forgot I'm from Ohio an out here polenta is called mush. It's even labeled Mush lol you should try frying up about 1/3" slices. When they're golden brown an have that crispy crunchey outer layer they're done. Then just put butter and syrup on em like they're mini pancakes

It was still a good vid 😊
I recently watched another solo lady traveler catch a similar (but far creepier) encounter on vid and she also chose to pack up and move on. Always better to be safe than sorry; no matter how frustrating or inconvenient.
Maybe part of your survival skills could be self-defense lessons?
Am wondering what your options are for improving the camper's insulation without making the inside too teeny-weeny? 🤔
Hot water bottles are super cheap and effective for keeping you warm at night, along with a wool/fleece blanket under your bottom sheet. The water can be kept in the bottles and reheated every night.
