  • Some babies develop high levels of bilirubin - or become “jaundiced” - in their early days. This is something that hospital care teams are looking out for and can help treat before babies even head home, explains Carrie Cacioppo, MD, medical director of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center newborn nursery and a pediatrician with Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Phototherapy, sometimes called bili lights, can help reduce that buildup in bilirubin for babies with jaundice. Dr. Cacioppo explains how this works, what to expect, how it’s measured, what kinds of phototherapy exists for home treatment, and what parents can do to monitor jaundice after they’re home.
