- How do we readjust back to living in a van after such a long break? We're back in our van La Bamba and ready to hit the road! We managed to get the van out of the muddy field its been stuck in for the past few months and after fixing her up we managed to get her through her MOT and now she's road worthy again wahoo! In classic us style, we have some last minute adjustments to do in the van on the day we have to leave home to catch our ferry. We feel a real sense of freedom to be on the road again and we head to Portsmouth to catch our ferry to Le Havre in France. After experiencing a very wet and cold day in northern France, we make a spontaneous decision to head south to chase the sun!

When you make it to Switzerland, try to visit Oeschinen lake in kandersteg. They have BBQ pits all around the lake if you want a nice chilled day or some decent hiking if you fancy something more energetic.

I travelled by motorcycle to Toledo in Spain in 1970. Carried a tent on the back rolled sleeping bags, and two panniers full of everything else, including a can of petrol and pint of oil. Managed to cover 4500 miles looking round France and Spain, no hotels, just camping, managed OK. So you are not minimalist enough yet. At least you are both still enjoying each other and happy.
We're really excited to see your upcoming travels. So glad to see you guys back in La Bamba. Your Ireland trip inspired us to take our trip there with a campervan rental. Must be nice to be traveling again?

I would highly recommend Slovenia especially lake Bohinj in the Julian alps and Bled. It's really beautiful country and alot cheaper than Switzerland.
People are friendly and it's very safe.

Great to see you back on the road! Have a great trip guys. Some tips for Switzerland:
Öschinensee - very crowded, but still worth the visit
Lauterbrunnen & Grindelwald valleys - also lot of tourists, but beautiful sceneries. I recommend to find a campsite in the valley and enjoy it in the evening when it is more calm!
Augstmatthorn - great hike with a views of Brienzersee.
Just be prepared that there are a lot of tourists and you pay for everything in Switzerland, especially parking. Enjoy!

Portsmouth is my home town, that was very nostalgic, one piece of advice just before you get to Switzerland get your food shopping in France (or Germany) as that will save you a fortune .... great to see you back on your travels again

Great to see you back in the van. I’ve just been to the South of France road tripping to find some sun. Switzerland is really expensive, and will be really cold until the summer. I’d recommend seeing all the great places along the French coast especially Vernon Gorge and the Lavender fields. Then head towards the Italian lakes and the Dolomites. Italian Dolomites are beautiful and I’ve always had nicer weather than Switzerland and affordable too! Safe travels!!

Good to see you again! Take a look at Fafleralp in the south of Switserland. Been there. Don’t camp on the large parking but go to the field right before the parking. Great surroundings..might be a bit fold
Nice one guys … Etretat is indeed pretty cool .. we got lucky with the weather … hope to do the Dolomites and Alps later this year .. first up Greece for a few months … safe travels to you both
On your way down to the Black Forest, swing down the Mosel Valley and try some wine, incredibly steep vineyard views and castles and ruins. Some towns worth visiting: Bernkastel-Kues, Traben-Trabach. But really all of them. From France you can enter Germany via the old Roman town of Trier. Get on some tour boats up and down the Mosel. The town of Kues has a bottomless tasting in the Vinothek. Was 150 different wines, all you can drink in a very old cellar. Maybe more of a young couples’ game. 😂

I have van envy! My Luna needs to sell, this has like motivated me to get on it. Like reduce her price just to sell her so I can buy a ford transit, build her and then go on the road. I’m definitely missing the sun! I love van life I just need to upgrade because I want to stand. I definitely would need starlink because of my business but I constantly want to be on the road. I’ve spent sometime backpacking and it’s been incredible in Portugal! Go to the Algarve. Soo gorgeous! I hope to be there august/sept wahooo sooo happy your back on the road
Welcome back to ‘The Road’. Suggestions for you approaching Switzerland from the south. From you vicinity cross the French Alps West to East, Briancon, Montgeneve, Turin, Milan and head North via the Italian/Swiss Lakes then to the Gottard Pass (opens Mid May) or through the Tunnel. Then to Andermatt. There the choice is West to the Rhone Valley via the Furka Pass or East to The Rhine Valley via the Oberalp Pass. In both cases you will be ‘shadowing’ the route of The Glacier Express, the famous scenic Rail Route, Zurmatt to Chur. First did the Gottard in 1981 and then repeated in 2007. When you head North to Germany can also advise on The Black Forrest. All very enjoyable and lots of Mountain walks available on the route.
I loved Kandersteg Switserland. And I loved Stechelberg. You don't have any free camper places but you can have very nice quiet walks in the valley alongsite a stream with loads of watervals. It's really AMAZING in Stechelberg.
