I have been using the BWC bags and have been pretty disappointed that they start to ripple after a year or two. I was not expecting that to happen. Glad to see the Mylar are better and last longer. I need to get some. Thanks for the tips!
I have purchased comics and the seller placed the comics in a Mylar so that is how I first learned about Mylar bags. They do present well. I've never purchased mylar bags but after seeing this video I will order some soon for my older books. I have had much older bags turn that weird yellowish tinge and had to replace the bags and boards with no damage to the book. I believe these were those older type bags (20 years or more) since I have not seen this happen with newer bags I've used in the last ten years. I usually now use BCW bags and boards with the adhesive strip on the back or more recently I've started using painters tape that was suggested by the great REGGIE COLLECTS here on TH-cam. Your video was very helpful.
I use Mylite 2's and Fullbacks for all my comics. Here is tip: order them directly from E. Gerber and buy them in 1,000 increments. Gerber gives significant discount for ordering at this quantity level. The only odd thing about Gerber is you have to call to order -- you can't order online. It's a bit like going back to 1980, but the savings on a per bag and board level is substantial compared to buying 100 at a time from a retailer. Also, order in advance of when you need them. Gerber always seems to have a backlog and it can take them 2-3 weeks before they ship.

I had to rebag/board about 1700 books from my childhood collection and didn't know about ordering direct from Gerber until I had already bought about 500 mylars and about 700 poly. I ended up ordering 200 more 2 mil mylars from Gerber and even that price point discount was vastly cheaper than buying in bags of 50. If I just ordered all mylars directly from E.G., I could have saved 50% of what I ended up spending. Last year it took 4 months.
I like how you changed it up this episode. I’ve gone to silver age Mylar and boards for everything since I started collecting again. It works for me.
I don’t know if you can fill an entire episode but maybe do reviews on other ways to store and display books. There are quite a few box options and picture frames that display books. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! Yeah i've been curious about those other storage stuff and definitely would do a review on them (if I actually had them). I did however do a review on the "etsy wooden boxes" which I really like.

Good topic. Would love to see more videos of cool topics about comics from you in the future. Another great video! I kind of need a break from spec-invest comic book videos. Not to say I don't enjoy your spec videos. It just has been one of those weeks where my LCS (for some reason) rejected a few key books I ordered the moment it went up on Previews World (rant). On topic, I use BCW 2 Mil Mylar bags and BCW "Regular" sized boards. I don't like BCW's "Current" boards because they're not as wide as the Regular ones and comic books slide off the board. Sometimes, mylar bags do make me nervous because they bend and fold a certain way and I worry it may damage the comic book. I don't have any golden/silver age books. Haha.
Thanks! Yeah I like switching it up too. Fun to talk about "spec" stuff from time to time, but I also love other parts of the hobby as well. I haven't tried any of the BCW brand, but from what I can tell it all kinda seems the same. So whichever price is better i think is best :P

I also use mylar/full backs for the "good stuff" and PolyProp for the rest. But I prefer silver/standard for all of them for 2 reasons...consistency in my boxes (OCD) but mostly to protect the sides and corners. A lot of my older current books have current-sized boards that are barely as wide as the book itself. Good vid.
Good points...I could totally see the "sizing" in boxes being an important thing for me...but also good tip on the extra protection :D
Like the Mylar bags and full backs but can they prevent moisture and humidity damage?
I totally agree, I'm ocd too and also I would rather buy the same bag and boards size for all my comics instead of ordering all those different sizes. If the comic is a little smaller it just means more side board coverage for the comic.
i do the same thing. 7-1/8 bags with 7" boards so if i bump the corner or god forbidden drop them, they have extra board to crumple before it damages the books.
I've been using the BCW poly bags with the sealing strips on the back - prevents me from getting a tape pull.
Oh! I actually really like those too. Super convenient.

2 mil is def the way to go, I use BCW 2 mil Silver/Regular and BCW silver boards and that fits everything from silver to now. Plus double boarding really makes the comic feel secure in the bag, probably don't need to double board with the full-backs tho.
That's a good way to go, especially since they can sit all uniform in size together in the box. Agree with the double boarding, i do that if I'm out of fullbacks
Another fun video. I have all of the different sizes too...just started buying mylites for my slabs too. I am also slowly switching my boxes to the BCE black plastic.
I need to look into the BCE stuff. How do you like them?

Thank you this is really informative. I just started collecting and I didn't even know about the different sizes. I got the gerber full-backs and BCW resealable poly bags, both Current size for the ones that I don't already have bagged and boarded from the shop or whatever.

I’m just about to finish up rebagging and boarding about 1600 comics. I used polyethylene bags that surprisingly lasted for over 30 years when I originally bagged and boarded them. (Yes, I’m old) I use BCW polypropylene resealable bags for my common books and 2 and 4 mil BCW Mylar for my expensive books. The downside to 4 mil is I can’t use tape because the Mylar is too thick, 2 mils are great because can use tape.
Good to know, I’ve actually never had at 4mil mylars. I think most bags last long enough, so long as they’re not grimy, probably fine to keep them on a comic for many years.
Thanks for the content. I have one addition for you. Like yourself, I find mylars expensive but I really like them. I found a mid priced alternative called OPP (oriented polypropoline). Very rigid like Mylar but cheaper. I have also speced on ST 170 with several recent purchases (cheap!!). Nice cover btw. Rock on bro.

As a retired photographer I should tell you that If your comics are exposed to daylight through a window, even indirect light, that there is a UV component that could fade certain colors on your comics. Also, long exposure to light any light can cause damage as well. I don't think there are any bags with UV protection but you might want to see if there is some UV protection film you can put on the windows. For my prints I could spray them with one of the Sureguard UV sprays in glossy, matte or other finishes. I think they've ceased production.
If those are all low grade copies on the wall then it might not be worth it for you but if they are good copies I'd do everything I could to keep them that way.
For sure, thanks for the heads up. I think about it a lot. Luckily the books are never in direct light. And usually I’ll close the blinds to prevent overexposure to them.

New to comic book collecting and your videos have been very helpful.
I want to add way before I knew that the bags needed to be changed periodically all the bags started turning yellow and kind of blurry 20 years later .I had stopped collecting in 1984 and basically kept them in long boxes till around 2000 . That's about when I changed them all . Restarted collecting 5 years ago but only about 1% modern.

To save money I buy direct from BCW 1,000 or more at a time. Boxes too. I buy enough to qualify for free shipping. There are coupons sometimes at sites like RetailMeNot. The one to go for is free shipping at $80 instead of the normal $200. That only worked once for me even though I've tried logging in from a different computer and under a different account and with a VPN. A thousand backing boards, bulk packaging, was $70 but has gone up. You can save on bags and boards by buying 5+ or 10+. I just bought 1,000 boards from an online shop for less than $100, a bit more with shipping and they came not in bulk but in regular packaging. Sometimes bulk boards will have slight dings on one corner. If your LCS has an online store they might offer coupons or other deals vs their brick and mortar store so it pays to check.

I hear people say that Mylar bags aren't worth it on cheap comics or for people with large collections. And I just don't understand that rational. The thing about mylar bags is they don't have to be replaced. I am coming up on 10 years since the last time I rebagged my stuff and I'm going to mylar for everything that I'm keeping. I hate bagging comics and I don't want to have to do this ever again.
I'm currently in the process of converting all of Amazing Spider-Man books over to mylar & fullbacks taped with blue painters tape. I just finished issues 301-400, just about half way there. For the rest I've been using the bcw poly resealable bags.
Nice! Yeah I think for the key books or stuff you really care about Mylar is best, but for other stuff. Poly is totally good. Painters tape is def easier to deal with too.
I’ve had better luck with the regular boards on the slick side compared to fullbacks in regards to not causing color rub.

I’ve had color rub from the fullbacks and halfbacks. Less problems with the regular boards with the slick/shiny side touching the back of the comic. I put two boards sometimes if I want the fullback experience. My favorite combo for big books is a silver mylar with 1 or 2 generic silver boards slick side up in a toploader.
Hmm that's interesting...haven't had issues yet with them, but will keep a watchful eye on it.
so I ve decided to switch mylar bags with full backs for my spider-man comics. My issue is i cant figure out the right amount I should fit in a short box without it being to tight. When you have a box filled with fullbacks and mylar it presents very full with less than 150 comics. Just wanna make sure i protect my comics and prevent any damage.
I'd caution you about the danger of someone slamming your door and having your comics fall. When I was a kid I had just finished the best model airplane I'd ever done a WWII Corsair and had it sitting on my dresser a few feet from the door. My sister got mad at me and slammed the door and the wind from that pushed the model off my dresser and into pieces on the floor. Under the right conditions, if you have the bedroom window open and someone opens another window or door the resultant change in pressure could cause a gust of wind coming through the bedroom or could cause the door to slam.
I’ve thought about that and have done some “door slamming tests” haha. Though I suppose I’m screwed if there is a massive earthquake
I am using the same products as you.However when it comes to DC comic books from the silver age you will find that you will need to use silver gold size in the Mylar bags. This just comes from experience using their products on different comic book publishers thought I just dropped that little bit of knowledge.

Thanks for this information. I was wondering about this. A lot of my comics are silver age DC that I want to put in Mylar. Most from late 50s and early 60s and those books are a little wider than the later 60s books. I think I'll get the silver/gold size. Thanks so much!

Most importantly, the book corners & sides are protected.
I put all my moderns in silver age bags simply because long boxes are sized for silver. I noticed moderns have way too much wiggle room in the box.

I have never kniw about the dofferem es thanks so much. I now want to replace my older bags and boards. It's such a great video because the bags and boards created a better protection for comics. Alot easier to resell a comic when it's in immaculate shape. It also makes the comics look cleaner and better. Where do you get your comic stands for your walls?
Definitely! My feeling is as long as the older bags and boards still look ok then I just leave them on. But if they are starting to look grimy I'll switch them. The shelves I use are simple Ikea picture frame shelves called "Mosslanda"

I use the same for 7 inch records vinyl, but are too tall.
Standard Bags and boards for me from 60s through present. I actually use mylites+ for my lesser books that 8 am planning on keeping.
Mylites and Half-backs for me… about 30 cents per book and you never need to replace them.
I have some Mylites that are over 30 years old with no wrinkles or yellowing.

I know this comment is over a year old, but if you happen to see this could you tell me wether or not the half / fullback boards will last just as long as the mylites? Everyone says that Mylar bags will last longer than you and you’ll never have to replace them, does that apply to the boards as well?
@@Count-yv3sg Half-backs will age a little (very little) over time but I have never felt the need to replace them.
Regular backer boards will turn yellow or tan, sometimes in splotchy patterns around the edges. Sometimes (very rarely) they will even have a photo negative look of your back cover.
About the worst thing that I can say about the Half-backs is that they uniformly turn a bit more of an off-white color. Brand new half-backs are not quite as bright of a white as regular backer boards… the aged ones 15-20 years+ look a bit more off white but it’s a pretty minor change. And I have never once seen the splotchy staining or photo negative effect on them.

I have plenty of books in the Poly's that are at least 10 years old. They do get wrinkly and a little saggy but they basically still hold up. Now for presentation purposes no it looks like crap. So I understand the Mylar.
Yeah for sure. And I also have some old Poly's...as long as they're not too grimy I think its fine to keep using them :)
I use the same. I use Comic Clear boards for wrap around covers.
That's a nice trick to use the clear ones for those. Might have to try that.

@@Swagglehaus I’m with you, this year I’m finally going to take the plunge and begin submitting my books. I’m nervous about the whole process because I’m so protective of my collection.
I like the current size as well, I am always fearful that the larger size the book may have a chance of moving around and impacting the corners. I could be wrong, also you're right it looks better. By the way Secret Wars, one of my favourites! I am hopeful they will get a boost if Marvel pivots to emulate some of that story line.
I def think Secret Wars will blow up if we get a Marvel version of it (which I assume we will eventually). Should be exciting!

Have you had any experience with the new fullbacks now being sold. They are white on one side and brown on the other. If so what is your opinion? I know they aren't as thick as the previous ones, so I'm most interested in knowing if they are adequately firm as a backing boards. Thank you. Keep up the good work.

I normally use Mylites 2 and full backboards for my more key books and polys with tape strips for common books or "$1 bins". However, because of cost I sometimes use half boards that are less costly. Thoughts on using half boards? 🤔
Yeah I generally do what you do. I actually haven't tried half boards...but i would imagine they would be good to use as well. Its like when people put two or three backing boards in there.
As someone that likes displaying their comics on the wall, are you concerned that the comics will fade over time due to light damage??
It is a concern but luckily my wall is never in direct sunlight. And when I'm not in the room, I usually pull the blinds down just to save the books :P
Mylar isn't 100% protective of UV rays, so I hope that's not natural light that's lighting up that room. 😬
When the camera is off, I get them out of the light ;)
Anyone using the 4mm Mylars vs the 2mm and if so, any issues with the sa comics fitting a standard size bag/board? Also, what are people using for sealing the tops? Heard sealing strips?
I haven't ever used the 4mm but from what I've read they seem to be "overkill". But who knows :P
Here's a question for you, I've bought a couple issues off ebay this past year that have come with the backing board in the middle of the book. Like right where it's stapled. Is this a common thing now? In all my time buying I think I've hit it once before, then this year all of a sudden I got four of them. All different sellers. I don't see it benefiting the book any. Sure you might reduce the chance of foxing on the cover, but now you're just pushing the spine against the bag instead. Is someone out there telling people to bag like that? I feel backing boards go in the back no?

I have to use the same bag and bored for every book in my box.. different size boards drive me crazy.. so everything gets Mylar in the pc ... I also use standard fir current books.. the current size bag is way too small for me.
New to your channel, do you have any vids on storing comics in the proper moisture location? I live in Canada and store my comics in the basement (unfinished). What humidity level should the basement stay at, 50%? what damage can be done? Best storage? etc... given I experience 4 seasons where I live, any advise on how best to store?

Good video. I’m looking to get my FF Byrne run bagged and boarded in Mylites but after talking to various people and watching videos on the subject I can’t gat a definitive answer as to what size bags and boards I would need for this period (early to mid 80’s) any help appreciated 👍🏻

I don't really think so. So long as the bags aren't really grimy, I think you can push their longevity.
So for early amazing spiderman (25ish) it looks like it should fit in standard, would you recommend doing the bigger silver/gold there?

The last comment is the cost of protecting my comics, I’ve spent at least $1500 in bags, boards and boxes over the last few years. It’s a mandatory cost because the worst is when people store comics Un bagged.
Yeah it’s just the price of general upkeep. That’s how I think about it too. But having nice bags and boards and boxes helps with the overall aesthetic
