I love the message of this game. "Just because we're doomed to fail, doesn't mean we shouldn't try." "Just because we're doomed to die, doesn't mean we shouldn't live."
That and when the Owlelk shrieks after you show it what all has transpired since its imprisonment absolutely guts me no matter how many times I see it.
"There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened." - Douglas Adams Thanks for bringing us along on your journey; I hope we may join the next one :) And yes, you are a genius.
I think about doors in this game alot. Especially when you compare the Nomai and the Owlelks. The Nomai's doors opened by observing them. The light switch in each door could either open or close the door just by observing it. The door could only be open or closed when it was observed to be. It shows their scientific minds and curiosity. The truth can only be known when it was observed, and they couldn't conceive of not knowing or not wanting to know. In comparison the Owlelk's doors open when the light goes out. A known and observed door is always closed. An unknown door is possibly open. They want the endless possibilities of the unknown. The eye of the universe was, to them, the antithesis of their whole world view. Observing the eye whould snuff out all possibilities, all options, and make everything known, ending their world and everything they cared about. All of this can be understood from the doors each society created. Outer Wilds is something special.
@@AbsoluteHuman Our doors say that Humans are just a bunch of handsy apes. If something looks out of place, we gotta touch and grab it. That's how we figure things out, and get into all sorts of trouble.
I think that their cultural difference is also Highlight when you have to reach them in the Eye of the universe, You get Solanum mask by soaring high in a Nomai Rocket, while you have to dig the prisoner deep under the earth.
I cry You cry We all cry For Echoes of the Eye But seriously though, this story never stops being so beautiful. Thank you for sharing the experience with us.
On an additional, even less serious note, I feel like the owl people are pretty justified in blowing out your lantern when they see you. If there was a weird little blue freak running around my house, I'd want to get it out of there too.
You know, valid point. I’d be scared of us too 😝 The story was genuinely so beautiful and the storytelling approach was so different from other games I’ve played, which made it hit way harder
@@blitzprog Who knows how much longer than that it actually was. We don't know how long it took for the signals from the eye to travel across space to actually reach the Nomai. When we look up at the stars in the night sky we see light reaching the earth from stars that have traveled for thousands and millions of years. Considering that the Nomai have warp travel, where they could find where they want to go and then instantly go there, we can never know how long it took for the signal to get to the Vessel of that Nomai Clan.
@@cybercat0564 There was also the fact that Dark Bramble didn't even take root, we don't really know how fast it grows, but I would assume that would take a long time to consume an entire planet.
@@blitzprog The prisoner could have taken "freedom" whenever they wanted. They had their own artifact. They could have blown out the flame at any moment. But they chose to keep living in the simulation, even as a prisoner.
Watching you fall in love with The Prisoner with like 3 minutes of interacting really makes me appreciate the genius of their character/story design. I care more about the Prisoner or Solanum than I do characters from games with hours of dialogue.
I just wanted to say thank you for these videos, Becca. The amount of love and effort you poured into filming and editing your Outer Wilds videos shows a HUGE respect and admiration for the game, and your gameplay/commentary made you a joy to watch for every second. These videos make me proud to be an Outer Wilds fan (and now a BeccaBytes fan). Thank you for sharing your journey with us. It has brought so much joy to my life and always left me excited for more! I'm sure this project was a big undertaking for you, so I hope you take some time to rest and recover. ❤️
This is one of the nicest comments I’ve gotten on a channel where there’s been lots of very kind comments so thank you 😭 The project was definitely an undertaking and much more involved that I initially planned for it to be, but it was a labor of love. Before playing Outer Wilds I was in a very low spot creatively and not enjoying anything I was making, and playing the game shifted my perspective on things a lot and changed my approach over all. And I really wanted to share an amazing game with people who also could appreciate it!! Now to rest for a few days 😴
@@BeccaBytes the parent comment said everything i wanted to say but i want to second that sentiment. thank you so much for sharing this with us! it was such a nice experience (and your editing! wow!)
Couldn't agree more. I've watched about ten playthroughs now, all great in their own way, but this is a gem even amongst those. Edit: By the way, after spending so much time watching, reading about, and thinking about this game, I feel like I know it inside out. However, what you said about time at The Eye made me think about the ending in a different way. It feels great, after all this time, to still learn things and hear new perspectives about the story and the universe of Outer Wilds. So thanks for that, @BeccaBytes .
28:00 Each person is like an extra, Quantum Version of themselves. Once you entangle yourself with the eye, all of your memories are entangled with it as well. And since observing an image of a quantum object (quantum memory, specifically through recovering their instrument) is the same as observing it, the people from your memories manifest as quantum versions of themselves. Gabbro even says "Well, not quite me. But close enough."
Yeah, it's visible as a moving star with a little bit of definition to it. It's also very briefly visible from within the Vessel after arriving at the Eye in her clip. Same is true for the previous time the Eye was reached, but then after the loop ended so standing out more clearly due being pretty much alone in the sky. Yeah, I went back and checked. Afaik, it gets added with a patch, the actual DLC don't need to be installed. Oh, and she didn't shoot the scout into the Eye this time around. Last time she did but kinda missed the little easteregg. Also never looked up after digging up The Prisoners grave. I'm amazed how many of these small details they added.
It's interesting how it also effect your own signalscope - try as you might, the moon (on sixth location) and the eye can't be heard. Reach the eye within the signal block range, and now it can hear these two, but nothing else.
I always loved that in the Prisoner's final message, it's playing the main theme in a slightly janky rendition on their instalment. It's such a small gesture of friendship, but I love it. He took the time to learn the song of the travelers before he put out his flame and I just really love that.
Oh man, seeing you cry at the slideshow made me remember how I cried too. Such a sweet moment, seeing us as a child inspired by the Nomai to be an astronaut.
seeing the cute little wood cut out version of the slideshow that the protag did for the prisoner has me in tears, and the howl they let out? knowing now that their choice wasn't in vain and the thing they did that cost them their life MATTERED. this game is absolutely amazing and the DLC is probably one of the best additions to a game that I've ever experienced
Welcome to the gameplay watcher club! Never seen someone make such a complete playthrough and get it as thorougly and intuitively as you did... and then struggle so much with the artifact and vision torch lmao. All jokes aside, this is the best playthrough I've seen, by FAR. The effort really shines through. I look forward to more existential dread :) (psst... you may like Disco Elysium)
I also love Disco Elysium. As much as I'd like Becca to meet Kim Kitsuragi, the game may be too vulgar or... political. And the size of the game: with more words than most book series, it sure has some stories to live through.
I asked a few weeks ago about Disco Elysium and her response was: "Disco Elysium is HIGH on my list of what games to play next. I’m planning on a couple of shorter, one shot style games to reset my expectations a bit, and then will be diving into my next big game afterwards and am pretty strongly leaning towards it. And if it’s not the next big game, it’ll be the subsequent. Everything about the style of it screams 'must play' to me." (I wouldn't blame her if she decides it doesn't fit the "brand" of the channel but I sure hope it does)
There I am in the credits at 48:19. It was such an honor to playtest the game, and such an honor to see you play it Becca. Honestly such a magical once in a lifetime game, I can't wait to see what Mobius Digital do next.
Regardless of other opinions, you deserve credit for your part in helping bring Outer Wilds to the world. Game dev isn't the output of three or four central designers and programmers. It's the collective effort of dozens of even hundreds of people. Just because your end of it was bug testing doesn't devalue that labor. So thank you.
I know its been a while since you completed this, but if you havent seen it yet, look up "The Prisoner's Mural". It's a piece of art you can stumble across in the burnt down shack in Starlit Cove, presumably the home of the Prisoner, and it really beautifully shows how he interpreted the purpose of the Eye so differently than the rest of his people. Anyway, thanks for this playthrough. I felt like I got to connect to the game again through your appreciation of it. And you really seemed to appreciate it.
And now you join us, unable to go back and re-experience this again, except vicariously through watching others do it like we did you. Though truly a unique one, after over 20 myself, so lovely, and beautifully edited (poor you with how much we didn't see!) As to recommendations, I crave seeing your amazing puzzle solving style tackling the mysteries of Return of the Obra Dinn.
In regards to what you said about "A fate worse than death", it should be noted that the prisoner did have his artifact with him in his prison, so he could have "killed" himself, if he had so chosen. A fun easter egg: The prisoner is from the starlit cove simulation (Since that is where a dead owlk is missing) and it is actually his house that was burnt down. You can also see the image he made of how he believed new universes would be birthed from the death of the old after someone observes the eye.
My interpretation is that the simulation doesn't allow anyone to blow out their own light (you can't blow out yours), requiring water to extinguish the flame. And the prisoner has no water he can reach.
I see what you’re saying, but part of me thinks that we can’t blow out our own flame because it’s not a mechanic the game lets us do, not because it’s physically impossible. If another can blow out your flame then you should be able to as well. Another reason I think this is you can blow out the candles around you, there’s just no mechanic for you to turn your wind towards the artifact fire.
Since the first thing the Prisoner does after leaving a message for you to join him in the afterlife, is jumping eagerly into the water, makes me believe he couldn't end himself in the vault. And the other owlks were to frightened to kill one of their own, so they thought of that sealed vault set-up.
that's not what he believed, that the next part of what happens when the owlks scanned the eye and saw the future, except that they stopped before the flower fully grew, you can see the beginning of the flower starting to grow through the eye socket at the last frame of the slide reel
I'm so glad you picked up on the theme of actions having meaning in this game, as its probably the message that resonates most with me from this game as someone who often struggles with wondering if anything I'm doing actually matters in the end. The Prisoner thought he failed, but his signal caught the attention of the Nomai and made everything possible. The Nomai tried and failed over and over again and died thinking they had failed, but their planning made things possible for us. Many players go through a phase of having to accept that we will fail to stop the sun from blowing up, or that we won't be able to rescue everyone like we would in a 'normal' game, but even if all we do is move a little four-eyed amphibian-person to a ship made by space-nerds to go to a place that a pariah thought it was worth people knowing about... the memories we made and the choices we made are enough to shape an entire Universe. Thank you for this playthrough of OW. Honestly my favorite of the many, many, many I've watched since I finished the game myself. Extremely excited to see what you play next!
I think in the end, the Prisoner shared one thing with the other Owlks, that being shame for their own species. They burn their slide reels and Eye shrines and kick you out of the simulation because they’re ashamed of what they sacrificed, and want to be forgotten in solitude. The Prisoner expresses the same thing in the Eye, wondering if you really think their species is worth remembering.
Becca, this is the best Outer Wilds playthrough I've seen. Your intros and outros were well thought out and fantastic to watch. Your personality is so sweet and genuine. We got to experience the "first time" again through your playthrough. Thank you for sharing ❤
Fun fact: the music that plays over the 14.3 billion years later image is the beginning of the Timber Hearth track but in a different instrumentation for the new universe's creatures
Congratulations on ending this series This (both base game and DLC) might actually be the best OW playthrough I've seen (and like many other OW players, I've seen a lot) Found you with Outer Wilds, but I will definitiely be here for whatever your next adventure is =)
I’m so honored to hear that this might be the best one you’ve seen yet. 😭 I’m excited for the next adventure with the channel, but Outer Wilds will always hold a special place in my heart
It feels catharsis that I'm not the only to be in tears with the memories and the candles. My first run was with the dlc so the ending of the game was truly beautiful, melancholic and a masterpiece. It's amazing how we feel so mixed up and rough emotions through that ending.
Everyone talks about the final slideshow which is understandable but my favourite part is the prisoners final howl/cry after it finishes like they've been there for so long and now they finally get to find out that their decision was right all along and it actually meant something before accepting their fate and just casually walking into the water and ending their own existence gets me every damn time
You finally did it! I've never seen someone solve the dream sequences quite like you did! I didn't even knew you could completely avoid sneaking by rafting the long way around in endless canyon! Now you've unfortunately joined the worst club: People who can never play Outer Wilds again, because they already know how to beat it. I loved how much you enjoyed the game, how emotionally you responded to the story, and how introspective the themes made you. Made me feel like I got to play it all over again.
I still tear up when watching playthroughs of this DLC and it's always interesting how infrequently the gravity of this ending resonates with the people playing. That's not the case here! Amazing playthrough, not only from the production quality and puzzle solving, but also the level of empathy on display. @BeccaBytes should be proud of your accomplishment 🎉
35:00 the way that instruments sounds… it’s so sad and miserable. it’s heartbreaking. and the fact that when it comes together with all the others in the final melody it sounds beautiful and so hopeful breaks me.
The ending of the DLC made me even more emotional than the main game. It just hit so much deeper on a personal level... I have never wanted to hug an NPC so much. The fact that after all this time we can finally share our journey, our feelings with someone else who truly understands, even without words, that destroyed me. Just let me hug my owl friend please!!! For me, the final lesson of the DLC was "There is absolutely nothing to fear." Which is funny because the entire time you play through it, it gives you cryptic hints and eerie visions and has you walk around in darkness, wondering what horror might be hidden in the vault...but once you understand the truth, the feeling of being scared and uncertain completely disappears. Such a genius way of storytelling. You and Terrabellum know each other? That is so cool! He is one of my favorite video game streamers! Part of why I finally played Outer Wilds was because he would tell us to do it almost every stream XD Also, if you are interested, a group of OW-fans made a video with an original song titled "All The Ways You Could Die" for the game's 5th anniversary a few weeks ago. Since you seem to always look for new ways to die XXXD Sorry for the long comment. This game just brings out so many thoughts and feelings.
God, your reactions get me every time. The way you genuinely care for these civilizations and their stories, it gives me goosebumps watching you react lmao. Glad to see you finished the DLC, I recently finished it as well and had a similar reaction
Thank you so much for the best Outer Wilds playthrough on youtube, thanks in part to the incredible editing on both the main and DLC series you put out, and in HUGE part to just being genuinely emotionally open and invested in the game, world, characters and events! Cried Every Single Time you did, every time your face crumpled; my brain licked a lemon and mine did the same 😭😂 Cannot wait to see what's next
I like to imagine that it's the Prisoner at each of video's intros that's talking and asking you about your adventures, all to know more about what lead you to them and to see how everything that is will eventually cease to be. Glad you get to experience everything that Outer Wilds have to offer. The story is perfectly told in whole and still ended just as much. As much we want to explore more, there's nothing left to say or show. Hopefully Mobius will follow up with something just as amazing, even if it would be difficult to even top this masterpiece.
"I can't believe I'm done" :( Becca that hit so hard, I absolutely feel that whole "wish I could wipe my brain of this game" so I could do it again. Well done though, loved being on this journey with you!
Loved both your base game, and DLC series! Especially the DLC has to be the most unique play-through I've ever seen. Your perfect mix of somehow ignoring the most obvious clues, while simultaneously figuring out the most advanced parts of the DLC almost instantaneously made it really unique and funny to experience! As some who is rather flat emotionally, this game really connected with me, and it's not my type of game at all. Felt like it through me into some sort of existential crisis of sorts, and I love the game for this. I especially love how the game is so simple. There are no advanced mechanics going on (even though you could argue the whole "glitch system" of the DLC makes it a bit more advanced), the music is also very simple and simplistic. But it all works out so extremely well. I love the Solonum/Nomie piano theme, I get emotional every time I hear it. Same with the main score of the game, so simple, but yet so extremely effective and fitting. This game started as a student project, no less. It obviously spiraled into something much bigger, but this was made from people with barely any experience at all. And yet the manages to deliver such a masterpiece, and they even manage to create such an amazing DLC, that I feel is almost better than the base game, and it all interconnects and fits so perfectly. Absolutely amazing, and it's stories like these that inspire me to become a better human myself. The only other game that has managed to touch me this deeply is Death Stranding. And while the two games are vastly different, they use the same cues to make it such a masterpiece of experiences, by utilising perfectly timed, and amazing soundtrack and score to elevate all the correct emotions at the perfect time. Now I even have my first kid, now at 22 months old, so I can't image how Death Stranding 2 is going to destroy me emotionally, and I'm all here for it!
I only finished this DLC some time last week, which is what compelled me to look at playthroughs of this game. The prisoner's cry of relief is so beautiful. The story just breaks my heart. How did they manage to make a perfect DLC for a perfect game? Just unbelievable.
Interesting to see how much the DLC has changed, I played it day one. The stealth section in Endless Canyon has been vastly simplified, I didn't figure out how to "bypass the stealth sections" on my first play-through, making that part horrifying for me to get through. They also made it far more obvious that The Prisoner decides immediately to escape the simulation as soon as he is rescued from the vault, even though he knows what this means. Without those footsteps I always thought he envisioned us using the raft together and wasn't really shure where he went. Now the game makes this far more obvious, which I suppose is a good thing.
Now that you've completed both base game and DLC: Thank you so much for sharing your Outer Wilds playthrough! I don't normally watch other people play games I've already played, but as others in the Outer Wilds community will attest, we all can't get enough of this game and how it feels to discover everything in it. I've watched several playthroughs, and I think your approach to the game/world/story is the one that resonates the most with my own playthrough, so thanks again for all the work you've done for these great videos!
I binged the whole playthrough in a few days and I don't often comment but I have to say I really appreciated the care you put into your videos for such a small channel. Plus, it was very nice to see that somebody else reacted as emotionally as me to the ending, as well as the different ways you approached puzzles compared to how I did when I originally played it. Thanks again for this wonderful playthrough, I hope to see more interesting stuff!
27:40 I think it's both: indeed, the real, exact travellers cannot possibly be at the Eye, since they were in the blast radius of the supernova. However, you preserved their existence through your memories, and what you see at the Eye may be a reflection of your them, but it may also be very real; after all, in the place of infinite possibilities, quite literally anything is possible, so everything you experience is as real as it gets as far as I'm concerned. Gabbro does mention how it's not exactly them who is present, in the classic Gabbro fashion of understanding really complex things way too well, but while this is technically true, for all intents and purposes they are real. I would say this is similar to how it's not literally you travelling back in time every loop, only your memories, but your memories make up pretty much all of who you are, so it does not truly matter whether the body is preserved.
I appreciate you creating this series. Outer Wilds is such a beautiful game that, tragically, loses a piece of itself once you experience its greatness. However, watching someone else experience the story for the first time allows me to relive the highs and lows all over again. Thank you for that. I hope you continue content creation; you have a real knack for it.
Oh yeah! Another Becca Video. Oh it's the end. Oh I am going to cry into my dinner, aren't I? What a beautiful playthrough in so many ways! The intro sequence at the campfire tying everything together and put some comments and jokes into the dialogue tree, the remarkable clean and satisfying transitions (like @3:37 ) and most and foremost: You tackling the scary mechanics of the DLC!!! I think I saw nobody's playthrough until now, that really went the extra mile to think of it as a big puzzle and solve all 3 locations without the stealth mechanic. And it's so refreshing to see somebody not get angry/salty/doubtful of the DLC because they keep bashing their heads into the stealth aspect without questioning it; very cool. I remember I got frustrated at the DLC but tried putting the artifact down so that they can't blow out the light (it didn't help) and discovered the matrix very early, so it wasn't as spooky for me (since you see all the pursuers, invisible paths, lights etc.). But you found the most satisfying way through the game I've seen! Congratulations! You should go to the burned house in the simulation again and look at the picture in the closed panel there to understand and love the prisoner even more. For future games I liked the "Zero Escape"-Trilogy very much (Nonary Games, Zero-Time Dilemma), they have cool puzzles, lovable characters and mind-bending time shenanigans as well! Keep on rocking!!
I'm currently on a road trip, but I'll make sure to watch this once I come back on Monday. But I already know it'll be great. Thank you for sharing your journey with us, Becca!
Also, a poem I found before One eye called out Two eyes hid it away Three eyes searched for it Four eyes witnessed its conclusion It was something like that, I don't really remember, but it's a cute poem nonetheless.
I may repeat myself after my first ending's video comment, but that's been a pleasure to make this journey with you! I was happy there to still have EOTE to go through with you but I knew this ending would be coming, I took my time before jumping into this last video, wanting to linger in this moment, but there we are and it hit hard, as always, and your emotions sure did not help ::') I am very glad for you that you have been able to reach many people as you really deserve it. You played really well, got really invested, your introduction videos were really cool, it's crazy to see you've just started your channel but here you are. I'm glad I got to relive this experience with you and cannot believe it is over now, once again. Thank you for all of this and I can't wait to follow your future adventures!
This still remains my favourite game of all time. Thanks for the wonderful journey of getting to experience it once more. The intro sequence on every one of these was such a nice touch. Also very much recommend to check out an album called "The lost reels" from the guy who made the ost. It celebrates and expands on the dlc ost and it's sooo good. Would love to see what the devs do next.
Thank you for taking us along for your journey through Outer Wilds! It doesn’t matter how many playthroughs I watch, the ending always has me crying like a baby. Congratulations on completing Outer Wilds! Looking forward to your next journey!
It is so refreshing to find a channel that gives the source material the respect it deserves, I found your channel while trying to explain how emotional the core game is to someone, glad I stayed. You did this DLC amazing justice, I was welling up right there with you, probably one of the greatest bits of storytelling in videogame history and all without a single word being spoken. Just spent my Saturday watching this series right from the start, amazing (hilarious in places too!) Thanks for such a great series, I'm really looking forward to seeing what you play next!
Finding the prisoner is both my favourite and most emotional part of the game. They got unfairly locked away and being able to essentially talk to them is so interesting. But sad because like you said, we get to tell them what they did was not in vain, and then they die.
One of the best Outer Wilds playthrough that I have ever seen. Everything here was special: the precise cuts, the amazing and creative intros, your intelligence and your unique way of interpreting things. Your approach to the DLC, avoiding the sneaking areas, was truly one-of-a-kind. Your dedication and creativity made me feel completely immersed. I found myself crying along with you during all the emotional scenes, especially at the "what they did mattered" scene (that one hit me hard) and of course at the end (and that's probably the 100th time I've cried at the end of this game LOL). To be honest, I started crying at the intro hahahah. Like the game teaches us: everything ends, but there's always a chance for something new to begin from this. I'll be here, eagerly following your journey! Thank you for sharing this wonderful experience with us!
Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us. I've been here crying along side you. I'm sad that it's all over. Beautiful editing, use of in game music, and I'm so happy I watched the full versions.
Congratulations on finishing the playthrough! This series was put together really well, and you were a joy to watch and listen to. It still baffles me how Mobius made such a perfect addition to an already perfect game. An amazingly satisfying conclusion, told so beautifully through the lens of the Elks. Absolutely cannot wait to see what they do next.
I saw a lot of streamers playing this DLC and i also played it but it was really the most honest reaction front of the end of this masterpiece. I really recognize me in you and the end and i also had to cry and the end... So thx for this letsplay, you make my day (and sorry if I make a lot of mistakes, im french but I try to learn english)
It was so wonderful to relive Outer Wilds through your perspective. Thank you for sharing it. You really experienced the full emotional impact of the story, what a beautiful game.
Thank you so much for this great DLC-LP. No worries, we all have cried. That must have been exhausting; I know it was for me as I played it first. And commentating through this emotional story is certainly a big challenge, and you did a fabulous job. Again: Thank you!
your entire playthrough was AMAZING, absolutely loved watching it. this game and the DLC are very dear to me and i think you've done it more justice than anyone i've seen. thank you so much
thank you for this playthrough!! i loved it! for an extra cry session: check out the starlit cove’s burned down area past the bell alarm and short boat ride with the telescope. there’s a little secret shuttered picture in there on the floor. i think you would appreciate the detail!
Loved every second of your playthrough. You are very good at this format and I hope we get to see you play more stuff. My suggestion, from one Outer Wilds fan to another: Subnautica It is different in many ways, but still scratches the same itch somehow. Thank you for this, this felt special
I didn't think after completing the base game that a DLC could really improve the story in any way. I was terribly wrong. Thank for a wonderful playthrough and allowing me to once again vicariously go through one of the most beautiful experiences in storytelling I've ever had.
Thank you so much, Becca! This was a triumph from start to finish. I would list my favourite moments, but there are too many. I also cried. If you want to join the blind-watch train and see what it's like, my faves are Symbalily, Keith Ballard and lil indigestion. If you're up for game suggestions: The Witness, What Remains of Edith Finch, or Lorelai and the Laser Eyes would all make a great series. Thanks again and look forward to more videos!
I'm pretty addicted to Outer Wilds playthroughs and this was one of the best I've seen, and the production on the videos is great, you clearly put a lot of effort in and it paid off! Not sure if you already have some future games planned, but here are some games that could make good let's plays that I think you might enjoy based on what you said you liked, or that have some similarity to Outer Wilds in some way or another (biased by my personal preferences of course): Short length (< 10hrs): To The Moon, What Remains of Edith Finch, OneShot, SOMA (edit: wait you already played SOMA) Medium length (20ish hours): Spiritfarer, Life Is Strange Long length (> 30 hours): Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Subnautica
It's fun watching people play Outer Wilds and Echoes of the Eye blind, to see them discover and struggle and overcome. But I don't keep coming back for more OW playthroughs because I like watching people solve puzzles. I come for THIS, to rekindle the hope and joy that this game made me feel.
I never usually comment on youtube videos but your outer wilds playthrough was absolutely amazing and unique! I totally appreciate how emotional this game made you feel because it made me cry just as much for days after finishing it and I feel better seeing someone finally get affected just the same!! I'm excited to check out your future playthroughs
Hello I just found your channel. Outer Wilds has been my favorite game since I played it with my girlfriend. It was a really special bonding experience to figure out the mysteries of the game together. I remember when we had figured out how the ash twin project worked and it was time to take the core to the vessel.. I was terrified for the very first time because I realized the time loop wasn't there to bring me back again if we failed. Then the DLC came out and I almost couldn't finish it because of how afraid I was of the darkness and the stealth parts. It's the kind of game I want to show my children if I ever have any. I still listen to the soundtrack sometimes, my favorite tracks are "The Ash Twin Project", "The River", and "Echoes of the Eye" Also sometimes I play the solanum theme or solanum+prisoner theme to fall asleep to. I've watched a few playthroughs of different people but yours was the one I enjoyed watching the most. I dont know if you're looking for game recommendations or if you've already played any of these games but I strongly recommend Subnautica, Horizon Zero Dawn and Portal. I don't include Soma because I think you said you played that one already. I'm excited to see what your next projects will be.
EOTE hit me harder than base game because a) I had time to ruminate on the base game before the expansion came out, leading me to feel more strongly, but also b) I felt more connected to the owlks' story and fear. I think if *I* knew the universe was ending or if we did something that could cause it or whatever, I would be scared. I wouldn't want it to happen and I would probably be in denial. I think most humans are afraid of death to some capacity and this hit that on the mark, but then was still able to bring it around to accepting life how it was and how it is. "The universe is, and we are." I think the feeling of "radical acceptance" is appropriate for after playing OW. The universe is not out to get us, it just exists, and so do we. Let's focus on the things we can control. Great playthrough, Becca, thank you for sharing!
Awww, Becca. I also cry when I watch that. It's masterful storytelling that it gets to us like that. **hugs** We can't experience these games again for ourselves. But we can through the hard work of people like you. Thank you so much! :')
I’m so glad to see how much you enjoyed this game and its DLC. It’s one of my favorite games I’ve ever played. I’m excited to see what you decide to play next!
Another possible interpretation of the Owls' perspective on the Eye: when they scanned the Eye, they likely only saw a small fragment of its reality - the Eye "big-banging" the Universe and destroying what remained. At that point, they didn't understand that the Universe was already dying and that they would already be dead by then. Thus, they interpreted the Eye as a "universe destroyer" and then they created those reels showing themselves dying because of the Eye, which implied that going to the Eye would be extremely dangerous. This interpretation makes a lot of sense. What if a species without such advanced technology accessed the Eye and inadvertently triggered the universe's destruction? "Let's just hide this sh1t" - they thought. An interesting observation: if you finish the DLC before finishing the base game, this interpretation seems plausible when watching the reels. From this perspective, the Prisoner, likely acting alone and without consulting the others, disabled the "Eye container signal" and exposed his entire species to unknown danger. While his actions were brave, they were also potentially reckless. He believed that the Eye might be trying to achieve something beyond mere destruction, but he couldn't know at that point. In the end, throughout the journey, we have the feeling that we are going to avoid the end, contain the Eye, or something similar. But instead, we pass through a lot of adventures, creating memories that matter and were crucial to shape a whole new Universe. So, reaching the Eye matters, which means all the "butterfly effect" caused by the Prisioner act also matters. It's fascinating how the game leaves this doubt "in the air," allowing us to "humanize" (or "alienize", if you prefer) all the different perspectives. This game is incredible!
Definitely one of those games that you wish you could experience for the first time again. That's why so many people go for the second best thing: Watching someone else experience it for the first time :D
I just finished the DLC yesterday and finding your channel and your let's play has been a blessing. We can cry together now. Thanks for everything, Becca.
After finishing the game a few years ago I keep looking for people that match what I felt when playing this game. This one comes closest. I was devastated when I met the prisoner, that final scene at the water... Now, just hearing the music is enough to stir up those feelings again. Thank you for sharing this journey.
Dear Becca ... you have gained a new fan here in Brazil. I relived my own adventure in Outer Wilds watching you play for the first time. Know that I cried along with you. This game is a beautiful work of art. Watching people like you who appreciate this kind of thing moves me. Thank you for the videos. You mentioned that you would like to play deep and beautiful games like this one. Here is my recommendation: “The Last Guardian” by Fumito Ueda… I am sure you will love it… Thank you once again.
I love the message of this game.
"Just because we're doomed to fail, doesn't mean we shouldn't try."
"Just because we're doomed to die, doesn't mean we shouldn't live."
And even if you do fail,
Some battles are the kind worth losing
"Just because we're not going to be here forever, doesn't mean we can't be happy that it can continue without us."
Can't watch that end slideshow sequence without tearing up 🥺
ive watched it 5 times anmd still cry
Same man. It’s such a satisfying conclusion.

That and when the Owlelk shrieks after you show it what all has transpired since its imprisonment absolutely guts me no matter how many times I see it.
I agree, every time...
Every

Thanks for bringing us along on your journey; I hope we may join the next one :)
And yes, you are a genius.
I wonder what human doors say about us then...
@@AbsoluteHuman Our doors say that Humans are just a bunch of handsy apes. If something looks out of place, we gotta touch and grab it. That's how we figure things out, and get into all sorts of trouble.
@@AbsoluteHuman To reach out to open or close any door we want just with our hands alone, so maybe it's drive, willpower, choice
I think that their cultural difference is also Highlight when you have to reach them in the Eye of the universe,
You get Solanum mask by soaring high in a Nomai Rocket, while you have to dig the prisoner deep under the earth.
I love how in the final slideshow the prisoner has the outer wilds theme but in their people's instruments 🥺😭
oh crap, I never put this together!
I cry
You cry
We all cry
For Echoes of the Eye
But seriously though, this story never stops being so beautiful.
The footprints straight to the water..
Finally, freedom after 280 millennia
@@blitzprog Who knows how much longer than that it actually was. We don't know how long it took for the signals from the eye to travel across space to actually reach the Nomai. When we look up at the stars in the night sky we see light reaching the earth from stars that have traveled for thousands and millions of years. Considering that the Nomai have warp travel, where they could find where they want to go and then instantly go there, we can never know how long it took for the signal to get to the Vessel of that Nomai Clan.
@@dayman888It probably took a very long time because the Vessel's warp to the Outer Wilds System was close to the Warp Drive's range limits
This is one of the nicest comments I’ve gotten on a channel where there’s been lots of very kind comments so thank you 😭
The project was definitely an undertaking and much more involved that I initially planned for it to be, but it was a labor of love.
28:00
Each person is like an extra, Quantum Version of themselves.
Yeah, that's why you can understand Solanum and the Prisoner.
12:20 "Oh we can actually communicate with them". This is why I love this part
24:20 “I wish I could just obliterate all those stupid eggs”
Well you’re about to in a way. But there’ll be some collateral
The footsteps into the water kill me every time.
Shoutout to Becca's friend for bugging her to play Outer Wilds for the past 2 years or whatever
27:45 if you look around here, you can actually see the signal blocker.
Cool, didn't know that!
Such a sweet moment, seeing us as a child inspired by the Nomai to be an astronaut.
same
I am not much of a crier but that part had me in the feels.
seeing the cute little wood cut out version of the slideshow that the protag did for the prisoner has me in tears, and the howl they let out? knowing now that their choice wasn't in vain and the thing they did that cost them their life MATTERED. this game is absolutely amazing and the DLC is probably one of the best additions to a game that I've ever experienced
I look forward to more existential dread :)
(psst... you may like Disco Elysium)
i second disco elysium! might make for a long playthrough but it's so good
I also love Disco Elysium. As much as I'd like Becca to meet Kim Kitsuragi, the game may be too vulgar or... political.
And the size of the game: with more words than most book series, it sure has some stories to live through.
I asked a few weeks ago about Disco Elysium and her response was:
"Disco Elysium is HIGH on my list of what games to play next. I’m planning on a couple of shorter, one shot style games to reset my expectations a bit, and then will be diving into my next big game afterwards and am pretty strongly leaning towards it. And if it’s not the next big game, it’ll be the subsequent. Everything about the style of it screams 'must play' to me."
(I wouldn't blame her if she decides it doesn't fit the "brand" of the channel but I sure hope it does)
Yeah Disco Elysium is the game that has emotionally felt most similar to Outer Wilds even if they seem so different.
There I am in the credits at 48:19. It was such an honor to playtest the game, and such an honor to see you play it Becca. Honestly such a magical once in a lifetime game, I can't wait to see what Mobius Digital do next.
dont pat yourself on the back too hard pal
Though truly a unique one, after over 20 myself, so lovely, and beautifully edited (poor you with how much we didn't see!)
As to recommendations, I crave seeing your amazing puzzle solving style tackling the mysteries of Return of the Obra Dinn.
The face of his portrait is also scratched out in the real world (in the stranger)
"I'm Becca, I like video games and crying and space."
Tinder profile right there.
Who wouldn't swipe right?
Finally, a let's player who has the appropriate reaction to the ending
What remains of Edith finch is a must. It's short too.
What Remains of Edith Finch made me cry so hard
Ooooh, Harvester Games' stuff is super underrated, really wish more people played them.
Have you seen Kolo's playthrough? She's also a very kind soul.
@@lorettabes4553 Kolo didn't enjoy the DLC at all 😂🥲
Fun fact: the music that plays over the 14.3 billion years later image is the beginning of the Timber Hearth track but in a different instrumentation for the new universe's creatures
Congratulations on ending this series
This (both base game and DLC) might actually be the best OW playthrough I've seen (and like many other OW players, I've seen a lot)
Found you with Outer Wilds, but I will definitiely be here for whatever your next adventure is =)
I’m so honored to hear that this might be the best one you’ve seen yet.
Well, this bodes well. I’m tearing up at your intro. Let’s do this!
Who doesn’t love having a good cry on a Friday though??? 🫂
@@BeccaBytes or three, by the time it was done :D
I still tear up when watching playthroughs of this DLC and it's always interesting how infrequently the gravity of this ending resonates with the people playing. That's not the case here!
Amazing playthrough, not only from the production quality and puzzle solving, but also the level of empathy on display.
@BeccaBytes should be proud of your accomplishment 🎉
Wow! It is really such an honor to let us take part of your true and honest emotions and do that journey all together!
Part of why I finally played Outer Wilds was because he would tell us to do it almost every stream XD
Also, if you are interested, a group of OW-fans made a video with an original song titled "All The Ways You Could Die" for the game's 5th anniversary a few weeks ago. Since you seem to always look for new ways to die XXXD
Sorry for the long comment. This game just brings out so many thoughts and feelings.
God, your reactions get me every time. The way you genuinely care for these civilizations and their stories, it gives me goosebumps watching you react lmao. Glad to see you finished the DLC, I recently finished it as well and had a similar reaction
Thank you so much for the best Outer Wilds playthrough on youtube,
thanks in part to the incredible editing on both the main and DLC series you put out,
and in HUGE part to just being genuinely emotionally open and invested in the game, world, characters and events!
Cried Every Single Time you did, every time your face crumpled; my brain licked a lemon and mine did the same 😭😂
Cannot wait to see what's next
It's okay to cry... Every time I see the hatchling's projection, the tears are there... every time.
Now that you've completed both base game and DLC:
Thank you so much for sharing your Outer Wilds playthrough!
Also, a poem I found before
One eye called out
Two eyes hid it away
Three eyes searched for it
Four eyes witnessed its conclusion
It was something like that, I don't really remember, but it's a cute poem nonetheless.
Have a great roadtrip!!! And thank you for being a part of the journey 😭
I have now observed it. As expected, it was truly an amazing journey. I can't wait to see where you go from here. Thank you
Crying when talking to the Prisoner is mandatory
I may repeat myself after my first ending's video comment, but that's been a pleasure to make this journey with you! I was happy there to still have EOTE to go through with you but I knew this ending would be coming, I took my time before jumping into this last video, wanting to linger in this moment, but there we are and it hit hard, as always, and your emotions sure did not help ::')
I am very glad for you that you have been able to reach many people as you really deserve it.
Would love to see what the devs do next.
thank you for this, I cried like a baby for the 7000th time watchign that final vision projection with you
Glad I wasn’t the only one to struggle to put the artifact down (I swear you never had to look that far down I promise I’m good at video games)
Don't be sad it's all over. Be happy you now get to watch countless other people experiencing Outer Wilds for the first time should you choose to.
Just spent my Saturday watching this series right from the start, amazing (hilarious in places too!)
Thanks for such a great series, I'm really looking forward to seeing what you play next!
A true masterpiece. Thanks for the precious journey you offered us. Your care for the game is shining bright
oh god, Becca crying in the thumbnail... this ones about to hit HARD!!!
I didn't watch your playthrough and just stumbled on your channel, but watching you play the final beats made me cry again.
Again: Thank you!
this is my favorite outer wilds lets play! thank you so much for your contributions to the 'I finished Outer Wilds' support group
thank you for taking us with yout on your Journey through Outer WIlds and thank you so much for sharing your emotions with us!
Thank you for how empathetic you are in your playthroughs, it's such an important thing for getting the most out of the game (and life)
your entire playthrough was AMAZING, absolutely loved watching it. this game and the DLC are very dear to me and i think you've done it more justice than anyone i've seen. thank you so much
This DLC is so beautiful. Thank you for letting us join you on this journey
Why you make me cry so lovingly (twice)?
I enjoyed seeing this through your experience. Thanks for sharing!
thank you for this playthrough!! i loved it!
for an extra cry session: check out the starlit cove’s burned down area past the bell alarm and short boat ride with the telescope. there’s a little secret shuttered picture in there on the floor. i think you would appreciate the detail!
Loved every second of your playthrough. You are very good at this format and I hope we get to see you play more stuff. My suggestion, from one Outer Wilds fan to another:
Subnautica
It is different in many ways, but still scratches the same itch somehow.
Thank you for this, this felt special
I didn't think after completing the base game that a DLC could really improve the story in any way. I was terribly wrong.
Thank for a wonderful playthrough and allowing me to once again vicariously go through one of the most beautiful experiences in storytelling I've ever had.
That was so touching at the end...I had the same reaction 🥺
Thank you, that was the best OW let's play I ever followed for many reasons
Not sure if you already have some future games planned, but here are some games that could make good let's plays that I think you might enjoy based on what you said you liked, or that have some similarity to Outer Wilds in some way or another (biased by my personal preferences of course):
Short length (< 10hrs): To The Moon, What Remains of Edith Finch, OneShot, SOMA (edit: wait you already played SOMA)
Medium length (20ish hours): Spiritfarer, Life Is Strange
Long length (> 30 hours): Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Subnautica
Oooh, Oneshot's a good one.
It's fun watching people play Outer Wilds and Echoes of the Eye blind, to see them discover and struggle and overcome. But I don't keep coming back for more OW playthroughs because I like watching people solve puzzles. I come for THIS, to rekindle the hope and joy that this game made me feel.
Thank you for all your efforts and for playing this. ❤ it’s sad that it ended but it’s also um, time for something new, now
I never usually comment on youtube videos but your outer wilds playthrough was absolutely amazing and unique! I totally appreciate how emotional this game made you feel because it made me cry just as much for days after finishing it and I feel better seeing someone finally get affected just the same!! I'm excited to check out your future playthroughs
Hello
I just found your channel.
I still listen to the soundtrack sometimes, my favorite tracks are "The Ash Twin Project", "The River", and "Echoes of the Eye"
Also sometimes I play the solanum theme or solanum+prisoner theme to fall asleep to.
Thanks for the playthrough Becca, enjoyed every second
12:36 When those higher pitch lachrymose banjo notes hit, right in the feels.
Awww, Becca. I also cry when I watch that. It's masterful storytelling that it gets to us like that. **hugs**
We can't experience these games again for ourselves.
This playthrough was amazing! I hope a lot more outerwilds fans see this playthrough!
Cried with you. Same as my first time. Thank you. So much love in your videos, so much passion. Keep going.
