LOVE YOU GUYS! Think you guys will ever do Psone vs saturn? Seems like one of the last generations where there were major differences between game versions.
Rented this game a lot back in the day. Mowgli's idle dance is permanently etched in my brain. My buddy and I would idle until he did the dance, and then try to replicate it, and we'd just laugh and laugh at the attempt (and most likely, colossal failure). Ah, the life of kids...
They're alright but they just feel like a complete throwback, in a bad way, to the "angry reviewer" era started off by AVGN. Like, we've grown past that now. We now have tons of channels doing brilliant academic analysis of games as a medium and an art form, progressing the genre of video essays at the same time, making games better by teaching tons of people stuff they'd otherwise have to go to university to learn, meaning they go on to make games themselves and they're better for it. We don't really need silly low-fi skit-based "comedy" game videos anymore do we?
I played this as a kid, I rented it one weekend and beat it before I had to bring it back to the store on Sunday. I was super proud of myself. This was one of the only rentals I ever beat. I played the Sega Genesis version.
What always takes me back to this game is the vertical design in the jungle horizontal levels. Very few stages in games even nowadays are so good in that aspect
Does the height of craters on the South Pole of the Moon ensure that certain parts of the surface are in perpetual darkness as to therefore protect any ice in those craters from sublimating, thus allowing us to therefore extract that water for human colonization? ... *_YES!_*
This game was one of the last additions I did to my collection (that I had until 2016). But I already had so many other things to play that I never finished.
Good review! I had no idea the SNES version of The Jungle Book was different than the Genesis game. I recall playing the Genesis version at like a video store kiosk as a kid and it was pretty fun. It looks like your typical Disney 2D platformer which is never really a bad thing.
I remember that I bought this game in a bundle together with Earthworm Jim which was according to SNES standards quite cheap (around thirty euro or so for the two games). I loved Earthworm Jim for its wackiness, but Jungle Book never clicked with me. It's indeed a beautiful game, but the platforming is a bit... random. It was difficult to find the right direction and simply said: it was no fun (at least for me). I think I only played it a couple of times.
Drunk, I had this game on SNES as a kid and didn't end up beating it until I was like 16. When you say it is "easy to run through in an hour or so," I assume you don't mean in terms of difficulty? This is straight-up among the hardest games on the system in my book!
I was thinking the same. This is a lot harder then the Sega version. This is probably the hardest disney game ever made, even much harder then the Lion King. it took me like a week to finally beat this game, as a 35 year old experienced gamer.
@@EngineJoe32 As he dosent even mention the difficulty, and says that this is a one hour long game, (well it is after 30 hours practice)😄 i wonder if he has even played the entire game, before making this video. The second King Loui level was insane. The only easy part was the last boss.
The early Disney games were always well made, if a bit challenging. I wasn't a big Jungle Book kid so I didn't play this one a whole lot. Seems like I should have spent more time with this rather than Lion King and maybe I wouldn't have such a grudge against monkeys. Thanks for the awesome videos! Losing Now in the 90s this month sucked so I'm glad to have your videos still going!
right up there with Aladdin and Lion King... own all of them for the GENesis and have played all of the SNES versions... Virgin just knew where it was at
Mowgli is my fav disney character, i love him so much as a fantasy writer one of my fantasy characters is inspired by him but his character is kind of sadder but he becomes more enjoyable later on.
Repressed memories. I was playing one of the versions on emulator long ago and I remember fighting the camera to land on a platform (I was awful at platforms back in the day)
I've heard quite a few times that the Mega Drive / Genesis version plays much better, but side by side, the Super NES definitely has the upper hand with graphics. And very likely sound, too.
This was generally the case. The SNES just had a much larger color palette available than the Genesis, but the Gensis ran very fast comparably. You could get the SNES to run a game at a blistering speed (like Uniracers for example) but you had to strip down a lot of the graphics (like Uniracers for example).
In my opinion, the SNES looked and sounded better then and the Genesis looks and sounds better now. By punching well above its weight for most of its lifespan, the SNES felt like it had a 32-bit soul trapped in its 16-body while the raw, rustic, more "video game-y" appeal of the Genesis today makes it look better as the evolution of the 8-bit era. The SNES and the more complex games that made up its library had more impact in their time and lead into what the 32-bit consoles would become while the Genesis' more direct, arcadey games serve us better as a reminder of the days when games looked, sounded, and played more simply.
it's interesting how, even when the SNES games looked good, the mega drive versions seemed to capture the film's look better. Maybe the colour restrictions meant they couldn't got as wild with the shading and they could restrain themselves more
I don't know if it's one of those cases where they developed the Genesis first and then the SNES second. I never tried the Genesis Jungle Book, just the SNES version. I remember the Console Wars guys talking about how the Genesis version has a slightly different game mode involving collecting Macguffins.
@@mightyfilm i'd imagine it was originally made for the Megasis since it was more popular than the SNES in the UK where it was developed. perhaps the snes game was americanised somewhat as well, considering us brits love to collect shit in games, but americans not so much
Both the SNES and Genesis versions are definitely worth the $5 for the DLC (it was either that or $10 I can’t recall) if you have the Lion King & Aladdin Collection for Switch especially considering that it also includes the SNES version of Aladdin (which was weird that it wasn’t already included)
Yet another I need to find a copy of. Although, it would be nice if Nintendo sold ROM's so anyone could just pick up a cheap copy and play it as they see fit.

I think SNES fans are mostly fine with the Genesis version being considered better since there was another jungle-based game released a few months later that kind of overshadowed this one.

@Gonbane I think N64 vs Saturn would be more appropriate given the Nintendo vs SEGA aspect. Or maybe NES vs Master System?

SNES games are often too zoomed in. The camera creates motion sickness when it moves at the first moment of the jump cycle.
The snes resolution is cropped.
Damn that harmonization in the intro!
I didn’t realize The Jungle Book pulled an Aladdin between the two systems. Classic Disney games had some quality releases.

I think the superiority of the genesis port might be due the developers familiariity with the system?
Yep David Perry. Enough said.
It was the engine they used for Aladdin, but that movie forced a change in development so it got released first
