    Really like it but unfortunately doesn't start in the DAW I use mainly and it makes it quit. WIN 11 home edition with FL STUDIO 21. No problem in Bitwig. Really strange.

      Have run into a lot of glitchiness with Kaivo and even Aalto in FL studio 21 as well. It's the main reason I'm hesitating on Sumu.

    How does this compare to something like Reaktor: Razor? Razor can can theoretically run a lot more partials, and of course it's Reaktor so you can FM the hell out of anything. This may be easier to program? Just not sure I want to mess with another additive synth and wonder if it's really worth that cost when I already have Razor and Parsec.

    • @DataBroth
      @DataBroth  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I don't think we should judge the sound of a synth on the amount of partials it can run
      it's sorta like judging a guitar by how many strings it has
      it's quite different from parsec and razor though, I love both of those, and they sound incredible
      but Sumu does some very unique things, for one it has the ability to import partial maps, which neither of the alternatives you mentioned are capable of
      (sure razor is in reaktor, but if you could make it do these things, we'd be playing with it instead of speculating)
      the spatial component and the pulses are also quite unique and powerful
      do you "need" sumu? depends if you heard anything you'd like to use in your music or sound design
      you don't have to learn any new tools, and I don't want to talk people into these choices
      Sumu is quite unique and special though, and while it is also "additive" like razor and parsec, it is also very different from them with little to no actual overlap in capabilities
      I suggest demoing it, and getting your hands on it
      this has often been the difference for myself in deciding if I want to buy something
      I either discover I don't like the tool, or come across a sound that compels me to break out the wallet
      (lucky for me sumu was donate to me as I was a tester, and many other plugins, this is a big reason I don't want to talk people into making purchases
      I'd rather my sound exploration help people decide)

      I just push the "monetize" button
      I do this because I don't make enough money doing this to survive (I work other jobs)
      I hope one day to be financially secure enough to turn this off
      I don't control how or where the ads are placed, that's done automatically by YT

    I awaited the synth since its first announcement. Now I fear that it sounds like a plugin, playing it in the studio.
    What do you say, does it lean towards hardware, considering low end punch, depths and dimension? Does it feel weighty? I don't want to buy blind and I don't want to demo it when every 30 seconds noise appears.

    • @DataBroth
      @DataBroth  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I'm sorry, but it's literally a plugin??
      what do you mean?
      hardware doesn't sound better than software anyways, software in general is more powerful than hardware, I'm sure there's some exceptions but for the most part hardware is more limited
      sorry, I'm not trying to talk you into a purchase or anything, please be considerate when it comes to spending, but I think there are a lot of misconceptions surrounding music tools

    • @DataBroth
      @DataBroth  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      also, very sorry if my comment came across as rude
      this plugin is great, but understandably not for everyone, if it doesn't resonate with you I suggest holding off
      only buy stuff if it really sparks some creativity in you

      @@DataBrothHi Data. No worries, I'm not offended when you state your opinion. Software is indeed more powerful than hardware, at least it has more features usually; but those options shouldn't be confused with AUDIO QUALITY. Take the best avaible FM software synth and compare it with a cheesy hardware FM synth from the 80th, for example the Korg DS-8, and you will instantly recognize why. Dead, flat, 2D sounding versus: vivid, full of character, depth and a natural feel for width due to L/R tolerance differences.
      I don't know any VST synth which can cope with the bass solidity and punch of an analog synthesizer or its filter behavoir. Most VST sound muddy and unmusical when the resonance is raised and low notes are played. But even if a VST does that decent, it still gets pale in direct comparison. Another example? The industry isn't even capable of translating pure digital hardware synths into a VST version. Waldorf's VST of STREICHFETT is a shadow compared to the hardware. Please let's not talk further about all the mediocre emulations of analog dinosaur synths like the MS-20.
      Anyways, in the meantime I bought SUMU because I like what it can do on the pure digital side. It's a great software synth to support my hardware synths, like PLASMONIC already does. The latter is even capable of cutting through a full mix of hardware synth, what is extremely unusual for a VST synth. I'm not sure how SUMU will handle that, as a working Windows update will be released only in a week. Besides, I like Madrona Labs. They are creative and approach things from their own perspective. That alone is seldom, hence worth it for me supporting them.

      @@nichttuntun3364 I am not confusing options with sound quality, I am including sound quality as well. To some extent, options ARE sound quality, options increase the range of sounds a synth is capable of. Now, one could argue this also increases the number of bad sounds a synth can make, perhaps even decrease the ratio or "good" sounds to "bad" sounds. But there is absolutely no magic that hardware is capable of that software isn't, especially digital hardware.
      I'm not sure what you are even comparing here exactly, it could be said that many digital hardware synths have better factory presets, or that analog synths narrow the range of controls to be mostly good sounds. But it can not be said that digital synths are simply flat or incapable of the same bass "solidity" as analog, this is just far from the truth. Digital is more than capable, and even capable of creating cleaner, punchier, and harder bass that works in the mix even better than analog.
      This isn't easy to accomplish though, especially if one is used to the narrower ranges and easier sound design of analog/ hardware.
      Your notion that hardware has some magical sound that software isn't capable of is just completely incorrect. On a factual level, this stuff is testable, it's measurable, and it has been measured. I've played with hundreds of software and hardware synths, and I can tell you first hand, hardware ALWAYS lets me down. I'm always expecting to hear this magic, to be blown away by the superior sound quality, and it's just NOT there. I hate to say this, but you are likely fooling yourself, I can not dispute your experience, you more than likely do personally fins hardware to sound magically better, but I highly suspect this perception is heavily influenced by personal bias and expectations (or perhaps you are using a low quality audio interface). This is more than common in the world of music, people listen with their eyes, I've seen people mistake all sorts of audio claims.
