I love watching my neighbor's dogs run down the stairs too. They have, "wiggle butt", too but they tear down stairs. Their wood stairs have backs to them so they're not open like that, it does make a difference. Hooray for Koda, such a brave doggie!

Make Koda feel safer with the stairs by covering the opening behind each riser. A simple an cheap solution is to use cardboard to fill in the empty space. It can easily be fastened. It might not look too good, but its just until the dog gets comfortable walking up and down. Then you can remove it gradually, maybe every other stair or something like that.. Leaving one dog downstairs while allowing another to sleep in your room creates a clear difference in rank between the two dogs. Dogs are pack animals. If one is allowed to sleep with the pack leaders and one is placed in isolation downstairs, they will assume one is more important than the other. Sure, you can say that you're not refusing koda access and he's the one who won't go upstairs.. but at the same time you do nothing to practice going up with koda AND while he cant go up you allow Cooper to do as he please. Look at Koda's reaction when he was allowed inside your bedroom. .You might say "he really likes that carpet", but he was filled with joy that he was "allowed" into YOUR room. Unless you wish to continue to enforce this difference between the dogs, either practice stairs with koda or insist that both dogs sleep downstairs.
