The older brother of a school friend who played guitar wrote to Zal back in the 70’s asking how he had achieved a particular guitar sound. Zal wrote back saying that he had used his trusty SG and had stood close to a very loud Marshall amp. Answering fan letters personally shows real class.

I was lucky enough to see SAHB in ‘77. Bizarrely, I saw Tandoori Cassette twice at the Marquee. I absolutely loved them but the music was younger than they were & the New Romantics were knocking on the door. Zal understood this perfectly.

What Zal says about Zappa, he is 100% correct. Zal is a legend.

This was fantastic Zal doesn't often talk much about the SAHBs. So well done Phil ,one of my biggest regrets was not seeing them live - being a local band i think a lot of us took them for granted. Very insightful.

Interesting interview. It's amazing how he played on two Nazareth albums that were so different sounding from one another, but both equally good. Orphans Of The Ash sound very interesting. Hopefully this album will receive a wider release on CD.

Great interview Zal. I didn’t know that you received no royalties. That’s terrible. Everyone is looking forward to a further album!

I saw the reformed SAHB only once, at the Robin 2. I was wearing a Zappa shirt, so was Glenn. I'm pleased Zal is a fan too. I loved Sin Dogs and I'm looking forward to the next project.

There’s so much great stuff to unpack from this insightful interview, thank you so much Zal and Phil. We all know that the Jimmy Pages and Richie Blackmore’s came away from the 70’s with a pension, not just for life but for several reincarnations. It’s so good to be able to drop in on the life of somebody whom, back in the day was just as gifted as their really high earning peers and know that they’re still doing it and are ok. So Jimmy may have the financial riches but Zals takeaway is a wealth of a different kind from Mr Page; hunger, thirst and desire. The creative genes are still firing, Jimmys seem long since spent, people will always want to interview him but Zal will be productive until the end. Good on him.

Thank you 🙏 I enjoyed this one a lot and it will give many people an insight to how tough being a full time musician is. Zal is not relying or living in the past. He still has that fire in his heart. A brilliant guitarist - Phil

Good luck Zal - keep going, saw SAHB twice back in the 70’s, indelible memories of one of the best rock bands live in the world who maybe one day will get the recognition they deserve. Listened to orphans of ash, pleasantly surprised how good and hard hitting it is.

Good to hear Zal in great form. I fell in love with SAHB aged 13 when I saw them on Top Of The Pops doing Delilah and have been a fan ever since. I wore my SAHB T'shirt at the recent Rebellion punk festival and the number of people who stopped me to chat about the mighty SAHB was incredible. Obviously there's still a lot of love for a band that could rightly considered one of the originators of punk ideals. They marched to their own beat and, despite a lot of bands that claim that they don't want to be labelled with a particular style, SAHB were so musically diverse that they simply defy classification. Totally unique and of course... SENSATIONAL..!

Wow just caught this, 10 days late.
Superb interview with the legendary Zal, had the pleasure of seeing him live on the SAHB reunion spell with Max Maxwell,
As usual he gives us a warts and all version of history past and current events.
Just so glad he's still making music, and still mentioned that book he's been writing forever.
Anyone here go to the Bilston Tea-party events at Robin 2, loved the Q & A bits with the band.
Fun fact, I actually suggested that title to then band manager Martin Kielty and he loved it, couldn't believe it was actually used for the event, still waiting for the free t-shirt he promised me, lol.
All the things we wanted to hear asked were covered in the interview, I could have stuck another hour of chat with Zal.
What a travesty that those Xmas shows in their heydays weren't filmed!
Where do I even buy the Ellipsis CD? I've been streaming it on Spotify, hard to believe a musician as renowned as Zal Cleminson has to take down the band web page, and the follow up album in taking longer than hoped because the other member is too busy cutting hedges to make ends meet!
If there was a way to crowdfund or preorder, I don't know much about such things, could be talking out my ear?
