I have been a professional DJ since 1987, working in radio and doing bars and weddings and charity events. I have never heard this story before. Thanks, Guitar Trooper.
Thanks very much for enlightening me about this song. I always wondered about Steam. I was with a traveling leather company in Florida doing rock concerts and festivals when that song was on the radio, so that song is tied in my memory to that time and experience.

Yeah. At one point during Three Dog Night Captured Live at the Forum album, an audience member in the higher section yells a complaint of not being able to hear them very well and one of the group says “You can’t hear us up there? see? you should’ve bought the $5.50 tickets up front“
Great video! Never knew this about this song. Seems to be played tons at NBA games back in the days when George Karl was the head coach of the SuperSonics. Not necessarily by the Sonics, but IIRC by the Phoenix Suns, who also played Gary Glitter R&R Part II a lot, and a couple other teams.
Thank you very much for this story! The song was also covered by The Supremes, and included in their 1970 album, "New Ways but Love Stays", with a rare solo part by the late Mary Wilson.
Another great one! Thanks! 👍👍👍 BTW, steam coming through a manhole cover is from a steam line water trap, and is technically called "Flash Steam". That would have been a good name, too!
Thank you for clarifying the history of Na Na Hey Hey. It was the song that was used as the soundtrack from the cheerleaders to learn their moves when I was in jr high school in 1970.
Remember that trivia show on MTV that was supposed to have been broadcast from the host’s basement? The contestants all lounged in beds, and when someone was eliminated, their bed, with them in it, would get pulled back through the wall to the tune of Na Na Hey Hey. The whole audience gleefully sang along.
Thanks Trooper, I know the song, but not the history behind it! And I thought I knew so much about music from the fifties, sixties and seventies and later! But I love learning new things...
First thought when I saw clickbait thumb: 'Na na hey Hey Hey' Nailed it! Thank you for this. I grew up near Bridgeport, and always knew of the relation. Did NOT know the entire story. Now I do.

I remember when all this happened but never got the real backstory. I recall hearing the song was performed by ‘studio musicians’ rather than ‘a band. Thanks for clarifying it all and for your great presentations.
Thanks for the great story about Steam. I have the album, and it's not as bad as it could have been considering the factors involved in making it. Keep up the good work.
Someone gave the graduating class of 1977 a graduation party at a huge farm. I can remember standing poolside with the rest of my graduation class and belting out this song along with everyone else.

As time goes on and these great back stories emerge about who really wrote/played on what, the "stink" on the so-called "pre-fab four (The Monkees) seems to evaporate. Thanks for this video!
38 year old in 2024. I like the song, especially now as a mature musician... but my first memories of the song were of it being a crowd chant at sporting events.
I just found this channel and, yes, I subscribed. I have heard that Tommy James and the Shondells have an interesting backstory as well. If you haven’t covered that yet, it might be a fertile source for a video.
OMG. Tommy James has SO MUCH stuff that it’s hard to draw lines around what to talk about. He’s on my development list but I haven’t had the strength. LOL
@@the_guitar_trooper The story I heard was that Hanky Panky was recorded and promptly flopped. A couple of years later a DJ played the song as a golden oldie and it took off. Tommy James then had to put together a whole new band because the original players drifted away. This new line up and the fact the James had matured some accounts for the dramatic shift in styles from Hanky Panky to It’s Only Love and I Think We’re Alone Now. I don’t remember where I heard that so it might not be true but it’s a fun story to tell ll.😁
@@Wally97523 The nugget of that is true. Some details are(and I am leaving out A LOT) 1. After hanky-panky was recorded and flopped locally, the high school group that had recorded it disbanded. 2. The DJ who started playing it in Pittsburgh, found it in a rummage sale and liked it enough to play it. It became very popular only in Pittsburgh. 3. Once they finally located Tommy and invited him to Pittsburgh to witness how popular the record was, it was picked up to distribute nationwide. 4. The problem was, there was no group named the Shondells. Tommy had to wander from one night spot to another to find a group that would pose as the Shondells on a performance tour. That is all I’m gonna get into. OMG. His professional life was amazing and SCARY.

She was engaged to be married already and I asked her out 50 times at least with no luck. Then her fiancé dumped her? And I began dating her in January 1970 and we were married in April 17 , 1971 the following year. I used to sing 🎶 that song in my head Kiss him goodbye., how ironic thank you for that information I never knew that.! 🧐🎯👍🏻💕😎

Years ago I had heard a slightly different story. The 3 song writers were in the New York studio working on a song and were snowed in. They didn't have their drummer with them as he was at home with the a cold. They did have a drum solo tape loop recorded earlier. So they filled in around the recorded tape loop leaving a drum solo midway through. Hence they made the "new" recording. I don't recall the radio station I was listening to other than it was in Indianapolis during the mid to late 70's. I think the point the jock was making that you can tell from listing to the song the drum part is on a loop.
At least this doesnt feature a droning AI narration. Very informative thank you.

Yeah. At one point during Three Dog Night Captured Live at the Forum album, an audience member in the higher section yells a complaint of not being able to hear them very well and one of the group says “You can’t hear us up there? see? you should’ve bought the $5.50 tickets up front“
Great piece of musical history!
Thank you for another great video. 😊♥️
(Suggestion - maybe a video about Tommy Roe?)
Good idea!

Yep. It’s used a lot. Worldwide. !

Thank you very much for this story! The song was also covered by The Supremes, and included in their 1970 album, "New Ways but Love Stays", with a rare solo part by the late Mary Wilson.
Thanks for the view and the Great post, Edgar!
When this came out, all us kids in the neighborhood would walk the streets singing the chorus loud and proud. Well, WE thought we were funny. ☺

I remember this song to this day. And I didn't even know who sang it. I didn't know that the "band" was called Steam. Very interesting story.
Another great one! Thanks! 👍👍👍 BTW, steam coming through a manhole cover is from a steam line water trap, and is technically called "Flash Steam". That would have been a good name, too!
Hey! Great to see you again!! And THANKS for your support! Please share this puppy for me!!

Fascinating story.
Incidentally it's also a popular anthem in English football (soccer) stadiums.

Thanks for your video. I remember the song, but I never knew the story behind it.

Thank you for clarifying the history of Na Na Hey Hey. It was the song that was used as the soundtrack from the cheerleaders to learn their moves when I was in jr high school in 1970.
A lot of school teams used it apparently! Thanks SO MUCH for the view! Please help me to spread the love by sharing the channel and the videos!
There’s a usage that I overlooked!!

Now I do.
Thank you for watching! I’ve had quite a few people from the area respond on this, which kind of surprised me. I don’t know why, but it did. Please help me to spread the love 💕 by sharing the channel and the videos!
I remember when all this happened but never got the real backstory. I recall hearing the song was performed by ‘studio musicians’ rather than ‘a band. Thanks for clarifying it all and for your great presentations.

Someone gave the graduating class of 1977 a graduation party at a huge farm. I can remember standing poolside with the rest of my graduation class and belting out this song along with everyone else.

My own grad year as well
What a super hit! Was played all the time when I was young. It did have it all- catchy tune, good driving beat, and not bad rock lyrics. Whatever, it kicked ass!!!👍🎸🥁🇺🇸❤️

Welcome aboard and THANKS for the view ! Please share this puppy for me!!
I remember when the White Sox adopted this tune for a few years.
Yep
Nancy Faust the White Sox organist, used to torment the opposing pitcher as he walked to the dugout after being replaced.
With their current win/loss record, they're not playing it at the end of very many home games this year.
On one of my vintage compilation CDs I have The Dave Clark 5 doing a cover of Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye.
I had to play that to remind me. I actually like that version better. But don’t tell anyone. Lol
Thanks for the view!! Please share it for me !!
Some details are(and I am leaving out A LOT)
@@the_guitar_trooper I like your story even more.

When i saw the title of this video, i thought the song mentioned was "Love Goes (Where My Rosemary Grows) by Edison Lighthouse, which has an interesting story of its own. Anyways, nice video, i subbed.
Hi, Randy!
Ha! Well, not to spill too many beans, but “Love Grows” is on the list to schedule this year. It is, indeed, a rich story of the music biz and the things that happen within it. So stay tuned. As I said, scheduled, but not yet in pre-production.
Born in 1961, I heard that song many times yet I never knew this....

Thanks GT. I always wondered what the backstory on the song was. It certainly has staying power. It's a song about goodbye that never says goodbye. Kind of a paradox.
Hi Gary!
So glad that you enjoyed the video! Please share it for me!!
Who knew.! WOW 🤩!! I remember the song 🎶 well I was discharged from the USMC 12/15/69 a Vietnam Veteran and met my future wife in a part time job We worked together in the juvenile furniture department of Two Guys department store in North Bergen N.J. . 🧐🎯👍🏻💕😎

I believe Gary DeCarlo sang this song live, on one of those PBS Oldies Concert Shows. This would've been about 15-20 years ago I believe. The guy who organized the concerts, is named Lubinsky or something like that. I can't recall his first name. 😊

Just a year earlier the Beatles had their biggest hit which consisted of singing nananana nananana hey Jude for five minutes.

NAAAA. NA NA
NANANANAAAAAA.
NANANANAAAAAA
HEY JUDE
Yes....But it was THE BEATLES!

Roller skating rinks were very popular at the time and I think this might account for the popularity of the song

“…as cheap as TH-cam would let me make it” is appropriate for this episode considering….
HA!! Well, irrespective of context, it’s still true! Thanks for watching that far!
Yeah. No matter how it happened, it was a slice and dice creation!
