The orchestra did a fine job,performing everything the conductor asked of them. A few minor intonation problems. But he could have asked for more, he just provided a workmanlike performance that could have been much more expressive. So all praise to the youngsters, less to him.
There are a lot of complexities in this work -- thus it's way beyond most youth orchestras. I am not hearing any "workmanlike" qualities in this performance. By its nature, Elgar requires a great deal of precision in order to carry out his ideas. Their rendition is clean, flowing, highly expressive, and fresh. It is obvious that the orchestra is exceptional. I give due credit to the conductor for not undermining their efforts, as can sometimes happen. I have no affiliation with this group, and have no insights into their rehearsal regimen, but I don't hear anything that would indicate a lack of inspiration and passion from the podium.
