English is not even Matthew Rhys’ first language. So he is a Welshman speaking English playing a Russian pretending to be an American.
Crazy, I'm American and watched the entire series. I had no idea until I watched some of these promo things after the show ended. He is awesome!

Matthew Rhys’ actual personality is such a bizarre departure from the characters I’ve seen him play. Like him as himself is just... wow.
This is a testimony to him being an extraordinary actor.
The shock when Mathew starts speaking and you are like why is he faking an accent. Then you google and he is Welsh. I feel like I have been lied to. I am actually questioning what is real. Wow he is a good actor.

I remember the day that I not only found out that he was Welsh, but also that they were married! It made the show so much better knowing both of those things!
@lockergr - I don't believe they actually married. I think they are long-term partners with a child from their relationship and 2 from her previous marriage.

lockergr I thought something was wrong with my t.v. when I first saw him interviewed. I stared at the screen for a good ten seconds wondering if he was doing a bit. I loved the show already but I respected this guy even more after that. He was in The Post too (good movie, see it) His accent is flawless!

He has a Welsh accent brought up in Cardiff, Wales. He can speak in his native Welsh.

Ever since "Felicity" graced our TV screens, Keri Russell was and still is an amazing presence. Specially that she does not age. Never get bored watching her play different roles. Glad she was in "The Americans." Hoping to see more of her on TV.
Just the fact they chose Matthew Rhys to play that role. He kills it. I am shocked his dialect is so smooth in The Americans. You can not even tell he is Welch. Holy. This guy deserves many awards for The Americans. That show is just phonemonal. One of the best shows I have ever seen.
I just finished it a 1/2 hour ago. I thought Rhys was an American, and I'm shocked at his accent. That means he's a better actor than I thought on the show, which was an amazing performance!

the most underrated show ever, when i heard about the show i thought is about Americans life or the Americans dream extra extra but i was WRONG its completely the opposite, its the best spy show ever i mean EVER

Martha was cool, Stan was cool. The Nina arc was cool. When Paige started to train was cool, but sadly it all ultimately amounted to not much. I feel a bit cheated out of 60 hours but I guess no regrets.
Dunno about most underrated EVER (Rectify? The Leftovers? Superstore, if you're into sitcoms?) but it's definitely criminally underappreciated.

Matthew Rhys' Russian on the show was really at a good level, one barely could hear the accent. Keri Russel was a genuine American in that regard :)

The Americans is a fantastic show. From the get-go it was very enthralling and full of surprises. All good things come to an end, I guess. Keri and Matthew are sensational in their roles.

The show in the UK was treated so shabbily in the schedules. The final series was aired very late at night which I didn't know. I must've missed 4 episodes before I caught it. Shocking treatment for one of the best US shows from the last 10-12 years.
Same here in Ireland, I only caught the final three episodes of S6 because it was on late at night and not really publicised in terms of being back. I eventually saw it on Amazon Prime which was good
Same in Germany. Nobody's really watched it. Big shame!

It took me a few minutes to realize that Matthew Rhys is not faking an accent here. In real life he sounds so different from in The Americans that it's hard to accept it and his personality is so different. The dude is a great actor

This was a super series! We watched it a second time with DVDs from our library. This really happened too, not these two literally, but the USSR's program and Reagan's efforts to stop it.
