Vegetarian vs Non Vegetarian in Hinduism | You Become What You Eat

  • JKYog presents an eye-opening lecture by Swami Mukundananda on vegetarian diet vs non vegetarian diet. Many of us have questions or doubts about the choice of foods we eat. Is or why vegetarian is good choice or not. Many are trying to understand the consequences of meat-eating or non-vegetarian diet etc.
Swami Mukundananda in this amazing lecture explains, with references to Vedic scriptures, that it is a choice that an individual has to make based on the goals and aspirations he/she has. Every choice has consequences attached.
The Hindu religion makes you aware of the consequences of your actions. While it does not forbid you from meat eating but it tells you the consequences of meat-eating. The Bhagavad Gita talks about three kinds of foods. There are foods in the mode of ignorance, foods in the mode of passion and foods in the mode of goodness.
Foods in the mode of goodness: foods that God has naturally created for us. The vegetables, fruits, the grains, cow milk etc.. When you eat these, your body becomes healthy, the mind becomes calm and peaceful and your inner-being becomes conducive to enlightenment. You experience peace.
These same foods, when cooked with the idea of gratifying the palette, or in other words, using too many chilies, too much sugar etc. to enjoy the food - it is termed foods in the mode of passion. This inflames the material desires and sends the mind into a spin. The person becomes agitated.
Then there are foods in the mode of ignorance - dry foods, stale and putrified foods, intoxicating foods and all the non-vegetarian foods. When we take these it increases our anger, inclination towards violence. The darkness envelopes our soul. Whatever we eat will have a consequence on our mind and body. Noble thinkers across the world have naturally gravitated towards vegetarian diet. Leonardo Da Vinci, George Bernard Shaw, early Buddhists - several examples are there. Slowly the western world and science is also coming to a realization. It is a medical fact that meat-eaters have a 200% higher chance of catching cancer compared to non-meat eaters. Why is that? meat putrifies very quickly. The carnivorous animals have small length of their intestines. Our teeth structure is also molars vs. carnivorous animals who have incisive teeth. The teeth motion is also different - grinding vs. vertical biting. Biologically, we humans were made to be herbivorous. Nevertheless, the Vedic scriptures say it is a choice you make based on your goals and aspirations are!

I’m a born again Christian and I just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed your video and this makes perfect sense to me! It was so peaceful and very interesting to watch! If I wasn’t a Christian I would definitely be a Hindu and perhaps anyway, we are all interlinked by God. I need to learn more about your religion. I do have a good head start though, I’ve been vegetarian and almost vegan for 40 yrs since I was 5! I looked at all animals as pets and could not eat it. Thank you for your wisdom and insight and God bless you! 🙏 From the 🇬🇧 and Happy Diwali 🪔

The best thing about being vegan or, at least, being vegetarian, is that you look younger. A lot of people are impress about how I look younger, when they find out that I'm 54. I'm in shape, train 5 days a week. I don't want to have big muscles, but just keep a little muscle here and there, cut. So, I look fit, use my bike to go to work every morning. I'm sure that its because I'm vegan (or almost vegan) that I can achieve that.
I saw a documentary about vegan communities in the US, and a guy in his late 60's looked like he was in his young 50's. The documentarist was very impressed by the way look, and what he can achieve while being vegan.

My body is no longer a graveyard for animals, this is deep but very true..I honestly believe that the fear, suffering feelings are transmuted through our ingestion of these animals.. Violence to get food (killing animals to get their flesh) creates violence in the mind of the consumer. As Socrates said "Why talk of love and peace when you have a dead animal on your plate?".
I was raised Cathloic but gave up meat and fish aged 20 because I read a Hindu book on all the reasons to adopt vegetarianism (environmental damage, land economics, suffering of innocent benign souls, health and spiritual evolution). You wont regret turning vegetarian or vegan. Namaste 🙏🏻

Even earlier Christians were vegeterians .
During Roman Empire people used to throw meat at followers of Jesus just to insult them because they never ate meat and those who were killed meat was stuffed in their mouths .
Many scripts of Christianity were banned by Romans because it went against the Roman Empire and the society . But when Christianity became an official religion Christians started eating meat .

That the current thoughts which is currently circulating in minds of several people like u which is the result of current evil society cause u modern are to be more advance than older . Nope being vegetarian would be the first ever peace revolution in human history . Food had a lot of effect in our body the way u eat food the way ur mind would speculate . Vegetarian is healthy and awakens the inner peace . Eat little ,good and healthy . Overeating can leads u lazziness and also leads u stress. And eating little than required can trigger up several diseases , so we need to understand of having healthy and pure diet .

Good job being Vegan. It's really hard to do. Although, I'm guessing why here in India, cow's milk isn't considered abuse is because back in those days, milk was directly taken from the cows that the households held. It wasn't abuse when people let the calves drink the milk first and then take the milk for themselves. But now that it is mass produced, it has fallen under animal abuse.
      This is my understanding^

We should not be drinking cow's milk, it was designed for their baby calves. We are the only species that drink other species milk, it's disgusting! The only reason any animal lactates is to feed their newborn baby. If you are not a baby calf, goat, etc, you should not be drinking their milk. We do not have the appropriate digestive enzymes for that. Also, educate yourself on the abuse that goes on in the dairy industry. We should NOT be supporting that industry either. We were designed to be vegan. It's easier than you think and well worth it knowing you are not contributing to any violence to these sentient beings. Live compassionately, eat compassionately. If you must go vegetarian first, then do it and move towards veganism, you'll never regret it!

way to go! Vegan organic is basically the ultimate, well some say pure fruit diet(fruigivore), but who knows how sustainable that really is. But think it can be done.
Either way the diet should be geared towards nurturing your body, not introducing things it has to work to remove like many toxins(pesticides/preservatives)/harmones or whatever other junk is in the mainstream food supply. Once u adapt the proper diet, the quicker you will reach higher realizations, becoming your highest self!
same with me, im vegan, no onions or garlic either, and trying to clean it up to be as much organic as i can as well. which is becoming more and more available in the west where i live :)

It is for every seeker to decide for oneself what is more important, spiritual progress or momentary sense gratification.
The path of spirituality & Guru demands from us complete union of mind in God (continuous remembrance of God alone) , which we often fail at. The least we can do is try to perfect & abide by the simple things which will help us progress towards selfless devotion.

Bhogar Sishyan , you are right in a way. But the calf does not all the milk it’s mother produces. It is a sathwick food , deemed fit for consumption by the Vedas. Man in his greed , created farms , with the sole intent of producing more dairy and meat, made the cow a calf giving machine for obvious reasons. If you did not know before, in the olden days, people used to milk cows only after the calves had their fill. Times have changed., the essence though is the same. Cow’s milk is next best to mother’s milk.🙏

@@lathakrishna43 what you said is exactly how I feel...... I know milk is good for health...... But in the context of today's selfish reasons of producing milk, find it difficult to consume..... Earlier my thoughts used to be about how animals are objectivied, injected with hormones, disallowing natural ways to lactate, later I realised, how calves are also impacted, where they are not allowed to be a baby wanting and deserving all that they can from their mother.
This is one of the reasons I stopped having dairy. Find it so strange, but maybe not so strange that we humans, despite having certain attributes of free will, conscience, intelligence, ability to see right from wrong, we fall below the levels of our own species.....

🙏 Swamiji , I belong to Hindu Dharma.
I have a this doubt of milk being considered vegiterian item since my childhood and I don't have any concrete answers to it.
1.Milk is an animal product so it should be considered non-veg.
    2. Cow never wants to share her milk volunteerly, it is because we harvest her when she has produced it for or her calfs. ( seems to be some sort of ahmisa -violence).
    3. If cow milk was ment for us humans she should be able to deliver milk all her life irrespective of being lactating eg her urine and faces.
    4. Fixing a cow to the pole and making her calf stand at a distance and then fetching milk doesn't sound a piece of non -violence or love towards any mother.
    4. Shouldn't we then consider farm chicken ( boiler eggs and not local hen-cock) vegetarian because they are never ment to hatch by scientists, they don't even need a male partner ( like cocks) and only designed to be consumed as part of diet.
Forgive me if my questions are irrelevant.
    HARI OM.

I appreciate your thoughts. Many people are leaving milk as the commercial dairy industry is very cruel. The baby ows are taken away from their mothers at birth and both grieve and cry for each other for days. This is so that people can take all the mothers milk and sell it. I live vegan as far as possible, so do not consume dairy products much. 🙏🏻

    • @knownneverb4
      @knownneverb4 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Absolutely valid question. Milk is also a non-vegetarian food but it doesn't involve violence like killing of cow so it was allowed by hindu Rishi's. However, these Rishis used to take only a fraction of milk after the calf was completely fed. The commercialization of milk is equivalent of violence and that is why Gandhiji had said that if you want to be a true vegetarian, you must quit the milk products too.
According to Vaidik scripture, it is not the vegetarian or non-vegetarian food that matters, what matters is the amount of violence involved in the process. Of course, it clearly dictates that anything that can move by itself (Animal, bird, fish, etc.) can never be eaten because it has a higher level of consciousness and as such it is a clear violence. But at the same time, the current dairy industry is also equally violent and must be quit. Hope this answers the question.

No bro you are wrong I would like to explain to you why you are wrong in saying that cow's milk is only for its calf and not for others.
Anyone needs a diet on the basis of their weight and a newly born calf of an indigenous breed is not more than 25-30 kgs hence at most it would not require more than 4-5 litres of milk a day whereas an average Sahiwal cow gives not less than around 16 lits of milk so even if 5 lits of milk is drunk by the calf where will the remaining 10-11 lits of milk go? Hence bro remove the thought from your mind that milk produced by a cow is just for its calf.
