You know Nathan, I feel the same way when I’m reading a book and I find myself just reading it, then I stop. Because the enjoyment stops. And then move on to something else.
How much I love ur vlogs. The shopping…the espresso 😀 the cinnamon bun with that icing!! I feel the same about historical fiction. I wonder about one written by Zadie. I’ve never read a Zadie Smith. Did you read Yanaginara’s To Paradise?
that truly means a lot! we love to treat ourselves!!! and i have not read To Paradise! the sheer size scares me off! i thought it would be a lot easier to hold it up in paperback, but it's too much! 😂 i'll eventually get to it because i love Yanagihara's work! what about you?
White Teeth is where you should have started! I began with her little non fiction book she wrote during covid and that wasn’t a great place to start either 😂 she left a bad impression on me tbh but I’m glad I went straight to White Teeth!!!
i know!!! i thought i'd try to kill a bird with two stones by trying out historical fiction and her work, but it did not work! >.< but good to hear that White Teeth is good!
So curious to see what I think of this one as a Victorian fiction girlie but also there's few adult historical fiction novels I've really enjoyed, I much prefer reading novels from the actual period! And I definitely have found Zadie Smith an unemotional writer outside of White Teeth. I feel like the way we engage in history generally is so much about the big events or famous figures but to me it's so much more interesting when it's just about how people lived their day to day lives. I wonder if you'd be more into Edwardian period fiction rather than Victorian, as I think it moved away from the more moralising style and into something much more complicated. E.M. Forster I'm thinking of especially, particularly Howard's End! Middlemarch is Victorian and did the booktube rounds recently I think. I read it so long ago but I do remember it being not like any other Victorian novel I'd read!
ahhh yes! i've been meaning to read Howard's End for the longest time! and Middlemarch! whenever i'm in the classics brain space, i'll look to these two. thanks bb!!! and i hope you do pick up The Fraud!!! would love to know what you get out of it that i missed!
Respect for the DNF! Too many books to read to spend time with ones that aren’t working for you. I really loved White Teeth. Curious what you’d think about it. I do think I will read The Fraud at some point as I think she really is a brilliant writer!
already knew you were dnfing and why based on previous convos, but I really like what you articulate on history at the end of this video. I'll probably pick this up -- I'm curious to see if I end up liking it or not. also not a historical fiction girlie, but I think I have less aversion than you
bc you are the classics girlie!!! i'm still glad i got something out of it even though i didn't necessarily enjoy it! but i'm sure you'll get a lot out of it
@@katsfieldnotes nonfiction is fab! korean perfumerie, but you can find them on ssense! yes! the next time i go back to the states, i will for sure try to find a copy at my local goodwill! hehe
Omg every single vlog of yours makes me want to go back to seoul. That dragonfruit bingsu is shekssssy 🫦 also lolz but this reminded me i actually dnf’ed swing time. I bought the hardcover and proceeded to dnf and have since gotten rid of it! I love watching you shop and enjoy your life, esp when you dance bc then i pretend to tell u lasciviously “yes daaance for meeee” 💃🏻 also omg that pacino bar took me out 😍
oh wow!!! i'll be sure to avoid Swing Time then! OOP! and will always dance for u bb !!! 🐒 you would love the pacino espresso bar. it's such a cute part of gangnam!
You definitely shouldn't pick up White Teeth. Go for N-W or ignore her novels completely and pick up her essays, which are fantastic. I prefer her nonfiction over her fiction actually.
@@nathansnook i've only read on beauty from her but i genuinely think it's a perfect, true novel,, and it's so funny too but thematically rich and weighty

right! life is too short and the tbr is too big! we're here to enjoy literature!
