I loved the 80’s, because no Cell Phones, Computers, and my Children grew up outdoors riding bikes and exploring. All my children’s friends would come to our home and play outside, and we had a basketball goal, and ping ball table in our basement. My friends would come to my home and visit and we would have coffee and socialize. I had a phone on the kitchen wall and on a table at my bedside. I gave my son a telephone for his room when he was 13 and stereo system with turn table and speakers for his bedroom. He told me years later he was the most popular in his Class at School, cause he had a phone and stereo system in his room. And we survived and my children survived without a cell phone in there pockets at all times.
I was 12 years old in 1982, and I can relate to your recounting of how things were back then. The above video with its references to TV shows, music albums, and news headlines has very little or even nothing to do with how each of us experienced that year. The video is not actually about life in America, even though it claims to be.
I remember when we'd meet at a friend's house, you would see our bicycles laying in the front yard, so you'd know who was over. We would play outside and recreate Star Wars, Battle of the Planets, or just whatever crossed our minds. And of course, we did play Atari 2600, but video games were just another thing in the box, it didn't dominate our activities.
Lol people are such hypocrites. There's no way in hell you would go back to 1982 if you couldn't have your cell phone and you would be just the way you are kids are today without it. I don't know why so many adults s*** all over the current generation when they would do just the same as if they grew up in this generation as others
I was 18, lived at home and enjoyed my life. I miss that America and how you didn't need to work 2 jobs to rent a mediocre apartment, the American dream of owning a home was attainable to the majority of people and you didn't have to take out an 8 year loan to buy a new car. What the heck has happened to this world.
I realize your question is probably rhetorical, but I'm going to answer it anyway... the restraining power of the Holy Spirit is being slowly withdrawn from the earth and humanity is being left to the evil they have chosen. "And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man..." (Genesis 6:3).
"Sex, Drugs, Rock and Brew; we're the Class of '82 !" Ha ha, I'm your age. RE: Your rhetorical question; several things happened. First; remember the USA basically ruled the world from 1945-1975, meaning the first 30 years after WWII. The hangover effect (in a positive way) was still largely in effect in 1982. Now; well, decreased communication and transportation cost have made it so U.S. workers are competing 1-to-1 with workers across the globe. This includes people who will labor 12 hours a day for a decent place to live, some rice/vegetables, and a leftover $100 per month. Second; the "Information Age" widens the income disparity. Meaning technology allows an attorney or financial analyst to become 5X-10X more productive than before; while it does essentially nothing for something flipping burgers, cleaning homes, or digging a ditch by hand. Finally, and I'm far right wing so I am NOT a government conspiracy person, but finally.... Our tax laws changed so that wealthy people benefitted a great deal; exaccerbating the impact of the technological revolution. End result; highly polarized income growth, along with highly disparate net worth. There is vastly less in the way of a middle class. On the positive side, a good chunk moved up the foodchain. Conversely; those without educations or a true skill fell further down the foodchain. Personally; I have an undergrad in Acctng (along with a minor in Aero Engineering) and an MBA with a focus on Int'l Finance. I retired from the Fed last year, and my retirement gig is with a major bank. That's about what it takes to be on the upside of the massive societal shift(s) of the past 40 years. Meaning since we graduated back in May of 1982. XO and Good Luck !
At that time the longest you could get for most cars was 5 years or 60 months. Banks felt that the longer the terms on a depreciating asset wasn't a good idea but the yuppies changed their minds later in the decade with their 7 year Beemer loans.
@@alancarnell2747 Somewhat valid; but note that cars were lasting longer as well. Made some sense. Then, early-80's the loans hit a staggering 60 months. Now, the average is 76 months.

The number one album on billboard for the year 1982 what is the debut album from the progressive pop band Asia. Was just so happens to be my all-time favorite band. Featuring the timeless classic hits heat of the moment, and only time will tell.
Randy Rhoads was killed in an airplane prank accident gone wrong on March 19, 1982, in Leesburg, Florida. He was only 25 years old. He was a phenomenal guitarist in Ozzy Osbornes’ band. He had just decided to leave Ozzy, after the Blizzard of Oz tour, to go to college to major in music, and play classical guitar. It happened about 25 miles from where I live. Sad day.
Several iconic things happened for me that year! I graduated high school, turned 18 over the summer, my first niece was born and a group of friends all went to see ET in the theater!
I graduated from high school in 1982, turned 19 in September. Poured my graduation money into an old rusted. Chevy pickup that should have been scrapped. My dad and used cars.....
I was in 2nd grade in East Los Angeles. I remember how much I loved being a kid! We always played outside, visited my cousins, rode bikes and swam in the summer. No cell phones or internet! Sadly, kids today are being robbed of their childhood with so much technology.
Also in 1982: Paul Lynde and Will Lee (Mr. Hooper from Sesame Street) died. North Carolina won the 1982 NCAA Men's basketball championship. Michael Jordan was a freshman on that team. Daryl Hall and John Oates released the album "H2O". It had the hits "Maneater" and "One on One". The First CDs were produced in Germany. USA Today was founded. "Silver Spoons" premiered on NBC "Taxi" got cancelled by ABC, but picked up by NBC shortly after that. "Joanie Loves Chachi" premieres on ABC.
Another event: Brezhnev died, and the U.S. had to enter a new chapter in relations with the Soviet Union (which were pretty rough for a while until Andropov died and leadership later stabilized).
"Newhart" started its eight-season run and "M*A*S*H" began its 11th and final season on CBS in October, while "Cheers" began its 11-year run and "St. Elsewhere" began its six-season run on NBC.
I graduated in '82, had a huge grad party (w/ 2 roommates, dirt cheap rent). That summer reminds me of my low-rider Datsun pickup, playing tapes like ZZ-Top, Billy Squire, REO Speedwagon, The Cars (Candy-O), Santana, The Gogo's, Berlin, Missing Persons, etc.
The last chapter showing the Time Magazine cover is oddly prophetic. It’s always interesting to go back in time. My son was born in ‘83 so these recollections are pretty wonderful ❤. Thank you 🙏
My very first vivid memories were in 1982 and as a kid in that year, I remember keep hearing Thriller aired on our radios and boom boxes at home. So glad that I lived all the 80s year.
I was 9 in 82, that's when as a kid, starting soaking more and more in from life. The80's too me were the best yrs. When people really got along for the most part. We were raised to be tough, mentally and physically. My generation was taught to work for everything you got and neighbors helped with the kids in their neighborhood. Always will miss those days.
Interesting video. I fondly remember 1982. Thriller, E T. (First movie I would see in theaters). But I believe you left out Masters of the Universe, yes the year He-Man was born. It holds a place in my heart forever ♥
The Tylenol poisoning still affects us to this day. All secure product packaging is a direct result of that event. Hard to believe that noone was ever caught for that pivotal crime. Thanks once more for a great video!
Yes, and to this day, this one case is what caused drug companies to move from capsules to “caplets” so nothing could easily be put in the product to tamper with it.
I remember that well. But God knows who the culprit is... "For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil" (Ecclesiastes 12:14).
I was 25 years old, and I was on my own,and working 💪at Montgomery Wards and Company as a salesperson, in the Men's Sports Wear Department. I had rented an upper flat house 🏠in Detroit, Michigan. Back then, a person could afford to live alone in the city where the rents were affordable. I also remember the sitcoms, and talkshows that came on TV.
I'm 71 and indeed age 12 is the best; you never look better, never feel better, sleep like a log all night, full of energy all day and you can run like the wind. Easy to make friends cos you have no baggage. And life is one big adventure.
I was 9 in 82. I remember my parents taking me to see ET for my Bday. I really miss all of this, even Cheers was something I didnt watch but could hear my dad laughing like Burt Reynolds every time Woody or Cliff would say something stupid.
1982, MTV had been out for a while in other parts of the country, but in late 1982 we finally got our MTV in Memphis Tennessee, changed my life in my early twenties forever!
I remember some of not most of these things and events. I was 5 years old, but I have some recollection of these things in '82. We need to bring these times again.
82 was a lousy year for many as the economy tanked and I spent a lot of that out of work. I remember 82 well, but it was a rocky frustrating time for me and many I knew , that yr, I got into a huge ballroom fight that included about 8 men and was one hell of a bloody fight that took me two weeks to fully recover from and I was on the winning side, it was crazy and very bloody once it moved outside into the parking lot, funny I had forgotten about that little dust up that yr till I got to lookin back at that forgettable yr, lol, Love to All !
The best decade ever, I turned 17 in 1982 and was eager to grow up thinking there was tons of time, now I would love to go back to those days, sure we did not have the technology we have now, but I would trade that all in for those days, trips to the video store, buying vinyl records, playing sports with my friends, so many wonderful memories.
I was born in 1982. Its interesting to see what life was like in a time before you lived. A little sports fact: Cal Ripken Jr's Ironman streak began May 30, 1982...
1960s tv stars are survivors in 1982 Michael Landon (46) Lorene Greene (67) Lee Majors (43) Chad Everett (45) John Forsyth (64) Linda evans (39) Sally field (36) Karen Valentine (34) Peggy Lipton (36) Bill bixby (48) Richard chamberlain (48) Andy Griffith (56) Larry Hagman (51)
1982 is also when the Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow (aka. EPCOT Center) opened in Walt Disney World Florida. This was the realization of Walt's final project following his death in 1966.
I was twelve. This is the year that really shifted Seventies culture into '80s. "Family Ties" really exemplifies the different, more conservative values of the decade.
I was a kid at that time america was such a nice place all the kids playing outside we didnt bother knocking on friends doors we just walked in crime was non existent in my area you knew everyone in town by name now my old town looks like a third world crap hole the generations of locals that lived there for generations have all left dont know hardly anyone there now when I was growing up I remember hating the fact that when you went into the local grocer to pick up a single item you would be in there talking for a half hour because you knew everyone and everyone wanted to say hi cant believe I ever thought that sucked
I didn't watch much TV back then because I was in the Military and didn't have much time for it, but I do know Newhart started in 1982 and was a major hit, with I think a seven season run. Although I didn't have time for it back then, I bought all the DVDs and enjoy watching it today.
Turned 16 in 1982 and was supposed to have a huge party but an ice storm killed that. AirFlorida's crash due to ice build-up on the wings -- THE reason I will not fly during the winter. Thankfully, I never had a job that required travel and I don't travel much for personal reasons. April snowstorm -- we had at least two feet of snow on Long Island and I was thrilled to be out of school for a few extra days. We had a fire at home after the snow stopped falling. It was caused by my brother's gloves sitting on top of our kerosene heater when he turned it on. THAT was a mess. The fire department was less than a mile away and had great response time so that helped a lot. E.T. phone home ... great movie! The only troubling thing was why the Mom left little Gertie home alone when she went to the school to pick up Elliot. What was she ... four? five? Something my Mom would never have done. Could be because she was raised in the Bronx and, in the 1970s when NYC had soaring crime rates, we lived in Queens. Family Ties and Cheers ... two of my favorite shows that year. The summer was great that year ... tons of time at the beach and lots of parties. Wish I could go back to those days. Much simpler time.
Growing up in rural Alaska I think my mom might have left me home alone for a few minutes if needed. At 4 I was riding my horse with a friend all day long miles away from home. But that was in the 60s.
@@KMF3 I think Alaska had a much lower crime rate than NYC 😉. Still does. Our neighborhood had lots of drugs and gangs moving in which drove us out to Long Island. We were fortunate to be able to move when we did. It became dangerous to live there in the late 70s and 80s.
1982 1. Iron Maiden's The Number Of The Beast And The Debut Of Their Second Vocalist Bruce Dickinson 2. Judas Priest's Screaming For Vengeance 3. Kiss "Creatures Of The Night" 4. Duran Duran "Rio"
My favorite thing that happened in 1982 was The UNC Tarheels won the NCAA basketball championship. Micheal Jordan who was a freshman made the shot that eventually won the game.
December 24 was the Christmas Blizzard in Denver. I was working for an airline that day. After work, I went outside to the employee parking area and all the cars were completely covered with snow. I walked back to the hangar, clocked back in and worked throughout the night.
Unforgettable music videos that I like for 1982. John cougar mellencamp- Jack and Diane Michael Jackson's- Billie Jean, and Beat it Culture clubs- Do you really want to hurt Me Grandmaster flash and the furious 5- The jungle How can I forget the movies that I like this year. Fast times at ridgemont high The last American Virgin.
ET and Thriller still hold up today as great entertainment. Letterman holds up as one the best talks show hosts ever. Cheers holds up today as one of the top ten of all greatest sitcoms. What a great year, I was only 7 and I was just getting out on my own with friends and exploring the world riding my bike to arcades and being dropped off at movies made for kids like us.

Another event: Brezhnev died, and the U.S. had to enter a new chapter in relations with the Soviet Union (which were pretty rough for a while until Andropov died and leadership later stabilized).
Definitely a team of stars but UNC was literally handed that win!
"Newhart" started its eight-season run and "M*A*S*H" began its 11th and final season on CBS in October, while "Cheers" began its 11-year run and "St. Elsewhere" began its six-season run on NBC.
Turned 20. No cell phones no computers life was glorious.
I love these videos...history has always been my favorite subject but the format of these types of videos are so interesting...
The last chapter showing the Time Magazine cover is oddly prophetic. It’s always interesting to go back in time. My son was born in ‘83 so these recollections are pretty wonderful ❤. Thank you 🙏
Memories. I love this channel !!
His voice is half the awesome
Aging is so many things and hearing this brings about the melancholy parts. Very cool, though.
My very first vivid memories were in 1982 and as a kid in that year, I remember keep hearing Thriller aired on our radios and boom boxes at home. So glad that I lived all the 80s year.
Thank you for your time putting this together. Great channel.
This was a radical year for music. Like so many awesome songs came out. This was, to me, when new wave became totally popular.
I graduated in 1981, god i miss the world of those days
Absolutely loved the 80s.Best movies, best late night, best music, best everything!
Also in 1982…
TRON starring Jeff Bridges was released.
1982 World’s Fair opened in Knoxville, Tennessee.
My husband and I took our daughter and son to the Worlds Fair in Knoxville.
81-82 was my freshman year in high school. So many great memories!!
Interesting video. I fondly remember 1982. Thriller, E T. (First movie I would see in theaters). But I believe you left out Masters of the Universe, yes the year He-Man was born. It holds a place in my heart forever ♥
Thanks for the Video (and the memories) 😀
amazing how it all seemed like a year ago, time is so strange sometimes-the 80,s crazy decade for sure.thanks for this video.👍
Also in 1982…
Walt Disney World in Florida opened their second theme park, EPCOT Center, now known as Epcot.
SOOO many memories. Thank you.
Love these videos …. The narrators voice is very soothing !
One of my top favorite channels on utube! Thank you so much for another great video & taking us on a stroll down memory lane♡
@@noble604 I did not know that
I remember that well.
My first apartment was an efficiency around 78' or 79'. My rent as $225 a month.
@@matrox The rent for the Upper Flat, that I rented was about $245.00 a month.
Good times
I graduated from college in 1982. My first apartment was $200 a month. Now I spend $200 at the grocery store every two weeks.
Loved 1982! I was 12 and it was one of the best years of my life!
I was ten. My parents got back together after 3 years of divorce and my brother and I saw ET 5 days in a row at the movies. Lol
WOW , thanks for the memories , good and bad.
1982, MTV had been out for a while in other parts of the country, but in late 1982 we finally got our MTV in Memphis Tennessee, changed my life in my early twenties forever!
The good ole days, no tattoos.
I knew people with tattoos in the 80's. The 80's were awesome. So much better than now.
I remember some of not most of these things and events. I was 5 years old, but I have some recollection of these things in '82. We need to bring these times again.
the year of my birth, so cool, love your channel, keep it up
82 was a lousy year for many as the economy tanked and I spent a lot of that out of work.
LoL 😆
The best decade ever, I turned 17 in 1982 and was eager to grow up thinking there was tons of time, now I would love to go back to those days, sure we did not have the technology we have now, but I would trade that all in for those days, trips to the video store, buying vinyl records, playing sports with my friends, so many wonderful memories.
I was born in 1982. Its interesting to see what life was like in a time before you lived. A little sports fact: Cal Ripken Jr's Ironman streak began May 30, 1982...
Same here!
I graduated from high school in 1982. Great times!
Ditto. Went straight to Marine Corps bootcamp on June 10, for 13 weeks.
@@Pink_Freud_Obscured_By_Crowds Thank you for your service.

Good Times & Thanks R.R.😊
I want my '80s & my MTV back now!!!!! 🤘😠
Another great timeline video from Recollection Road. Keep up the good work and keep these great videos coming.👍👍

1982 is also when the Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow (aka. EPCOT Center) opened in Walt Disney World Florida. This was the realization of Walt's final project following his death in 1966.
America was SO much better in 1982. Far less of the mass confusion, disrespect and violence that we have today.
I was twelve. This is the year that really shifted Seventies culture into '80s. "Family Ties" really exemplifies the different, more conservative values of the decade.
My birth year! This is so awesome to see!
@5:16 I never cared for that show, but gosh, look how young Michael J Fox was back then!
Lawn chair Larry, A real hero
Another one of my favorite years. The start of my freshman year in high school!
Mine too buddy
@@badcamaroz28 70's kids, 80's teens rock!✌🏾👊🏾
Me too 9th grade sep 81
this is great, I was born in 1982
You're almost 40!
Passed away in that year
Paul Lynde ( January 10)
Grace Kelly ( September 14)
Ingrid Bergman ( august 12)
Marty Robbins ( December 8)
John Belushi in March
Baseball players Ken Boyer and Monte Stratton in September
Henry Fonda died the same day as Ingrid Bergman.
Wait, sorry, Bergman died August 29th, her 67th birthday.
I didn't watch much TV back then because I was in the Military and didn't have much time for it, but I do know Newhart started in 1982 and was a major hit, with I think a seven season run. Although I didn't have time for it back then, I bought all the DVDs and enjoy watching it today.
Lawn Chair Larry has got to be the craziest person to ever live - lol.
@@thecatlady6 yes I am sure
Drew Barrymore was so little. Family ties was a great show and I still watch it to this day
Tv shows debuts at that year ( don’t mentioned)
Knight Rider
Webster
The year that I graduated from Saint Albans High School in Saint Albans, WV. Almost 40 years ago...Wow!!
1982
1. Iron Maiden's The Number Of The Beast And The Debut Of Their Second Vocalist Bruce Dickinson
2. Judas Priest's Screaming For Vengeance
3. Kiss "Creatures Of The Night"
4. Duran Duran "Rio"
My favorite thing that happened in 1982 was The UNC Tarheels won the NCAA basketball championship. Micheal Jordan who was a freshman made the shot that eventually won the game.
my high school years..
I miss the 80's so much!
December 24 was the Christmas Blizzard in Denver. I was working for an airline that day. After work, I went outside to the employee parking area and all the cars were completely covered with snow. I walked back to the hangar, clocked back in and worked throughout the night.
It was 60 degrees in Chicago on Christmas Day in 1982.
Unforgettable music videos that I like for 1982.
John cougar mellencamp- Jack and Diane
Michael Jackson's- Billie Jean, and Beat it
Culture clubs- Do you really want to hurt Me
Grandmaster flash and the furious 5- The jungle
How can I forget the movies that I like this year.
Fast times at ridgemont high
The last American Virgin.
Summer of '82 had so many classic movies one after the other. I envy the kids back then. '82 and '84 were, culturally, the best years in that decade.
I lived it and loved it.
@@Chilly_Billy Me too! 1950s through the 80s were the awesomest years in History. Oh if we could only turn back the hands of time.
Remember those days, my children could play in the neighborhood we lived. Today you cannot allow your children out of your sight.
The year I was born. October 22nd🙂😇
Birthday Twin 👍🏾
OMG I had a neighbor who played the Thriller album continuously............cant stand it to this day.

Olivia Newton John’s “Physical” video was banned for being too raunchy...”let’s get physical, let’s get animal, let me hear your body talk...”
I always thought the 80s really started in 1982. 1980 and 1981 were getting there with early MTV and all, but still kinda inbetween the 70s and 80s.
September 19th 1982.....my older sister was born.
I was mostly 2 in 1982 but turned 3 on New Year's Eve. 😂 I have no memory of this year but time was much more simple. No cell phones and social media.
I cannot believe my teen years are this far in the past already.
My teen years were already a decade and a half earlier by then. Wouldn’t want to do that over. I definitely would redo the early 70’s.
1982 Best year ever Married my dream girl ❤️
My Second Favorite Year Ever!!!
I remember the 1980s it seemed like modern times. To tell the truth the 60s and 70s have the warmest memories of my life. I was a small boy in the 1960s and a teenager in the 70s.
