Gear 5 is fr one of the best anime transformations in my opinion it’s in my Top 5 fav anime transformations of all time. Never have I felt this much fun and joy watching an the MC get a new transformation.

If sucks because there’s a lot that could’ve been done with him here but there’s even things like him being not actively mad at Sanji for what he did that seems even out of character for him. I prefer pre-timeskip Zoro infinitely more
Oda drew inspiration from the cartoon “Tom and Jerry.” Oda himself wanted to draw something funny and also wanted Luffy's fights to regain some funny elements, even though he was aware the general audience of One Piece would not like this concept because the general action sequences of contemporary Shonen manga are taken too seriously, causing the genre's uniqueness in the past to be lost over time. With the introduction of Gear 5, Oda wanted to create a polarity between Luffy's cartoonish humor and Kaidou's deadly seriousness.
I appreciate that he's doing something different but it's a bit too jarring for me. I do think it's kool and interesting and fresh but for me who felt the weight of the wano arc and what everyone was fighting for it just felt sort of... Out of timing? Is the best way I can place it. Great concept, weird execution to me..
What I love the most about Gear 5 is it’s symbolism and how it perfectly fits the themes of the story. Gear 5 represents freedom and Luffy can literally do whatever he wants in this form. In the world of One Piece, the Sun God Nika is revered by slaves as a warrior who will free them from their suffering. As Joyboy, Luffy represents the dawn (sun) that will shine freedom and hope and bring laughter to the world.

Kaido also said that Luffy is coated always in ARMAMENT and COC and it also seems like FUTURE SIGHT too. When he was HIT by Kaido's CLUB, Luffy's face took the form of Kaido's club as it hits Luffy reducing the impact. I think future sight played there hence why Luffy is taking all this hit, not to mention there's also the changing of environment to rubber to reduce the impact by changing the hard surface to rubber. This whole gear 5th thing is both hilarious and epic once it gets more fleshed out like imagine Luffy grabbing the ground turning that earth into a rubber staff and fight using it, manipulating its size etc. just like The Monkey King Wukong. Luffy is already used to staff since he was using a pipe as weapon when he was a kid. The amount of ways Luffy can fight in gear 5th is almost endless man and I'm loving it.

Going past the obvious joke: The age component is something I am really stoked on with the live action series, because the actors actually are quite young. It's something we've been missing in the animation because lets be honest: Nami getting her fan service milk chugs has been the only actual aging process within the crew on a physical level. I really like the idea of having an interpretation of the story where aging will be visible. Of course it aint gonna be the exact timeframe of the manga/anime but still: It's an aspect I find intriguing if they pull it off.

I don't think a lot of people realize the insane durability buff Luffy gets in gear 5 . He used to get ko'd from 2 or 3 clean hits and now he's eating those like nothing goofing around. We've never seen any awakened devil fruit like this before becuase it has Paramecia properties in that it can affect Luffy's surroundings (similar to Doffy's Ito Ito no Mi/Katakuri's Mochi-Mochi) while also being able to affect other beings as seen with Kaido turning into a looney tune type character and the rest of the crew having their eyes pop out while in the pressence of Luffy. In addition, it has the natural Zoan transformation. Makes sence why the WG say it's ridiculous.

The translation they used in the anime is wrong.Essentially in the manga they say only limited by his imagination.Thats why everything he touches doesnt just turn to rubber it turns goofy cause thats how luffy imagines it to be. I don't think a lot of people realize the insane durability buff Luffy gets in gear 5 . He used to get ko'd from 2 or 3 clean hits and now he's eating those like nothing goofing around. Also the anime kinda low balled that blast breath this ep cause in the manga it looked like 2x bigger than a normal one and Luffy took that shit point blank and just shook it off.

The thing is that wants Luffy figures out what he is, ITS OVER, Gear 5 has the power of imagination Aswell, so wants Luffy figures that out, everyone done for.
Luffy is still a kid so his imagination can be super crazy, he's even a god in gear 5 form, so he can push limits.
He can turn anything into rubber and i mean anything!, like Kaido's eyes and the ground around him, potently probably turn his heart or insides into rubber to protect himself.
And i seen some of the manga so, i dont think this is the last we are going to see gear 5.
His heart becoming rubber is what brought him back to life

The translation they used in the anime is wrong.Essentially in the manga they say only limited by his imagination.Thats why everything he touches doesnt just turn to rubber it turns goofy cause thats how luffy imagines it to be. Remember the stigma of Children having wild imaginations.Or even dreaming alot as a child and then when you grow up it lessens.But for luffy he has a child mind so the power is perfect for him and ONLY him , he is truly, a 'JOYBOY' .Only somebody with limitless imagination could use this ridiculous fruit. btw luffy vs kaido is was inspired by tom and jerry thats why kaido is blue.ODA said this in an interview before.He also said he loves olds school cartoons like rubber house animation -
