For those who don't understand what's going on. 1. Winner is who finishes first (time is no matter). One of cyclists starts to move first. 2. Hard to believe, but at 50-70 Km/h the windage eats 90-95% of cyclist's power. 3. There is 2-meters zone of low airpressure behind a cyclist moving at 30 Km/h or faster. So if you move behind other cyclist you use 30% less power. That is why a Mr.Second has huge advantage in energy consumption at high speed. At low speed (up to 15 Km/h approx) Mr.Second has no advantage. If Mr.First start with 30 Km/h (or faster) he will spend 30% more energy and Mr.Second easily outruns him on last 100 meters spurt. If Mr.First want to win he starts with extremely low speed and waits for last 100-200 meters sector where he has a 3-4 meters advantage for finish spurt. From start to last 200 m sector Mr.First always tries to stop moving with hope that Mr.Second couldn't stop and moves to first position. This is a game of nerves, skill and thews ))
though it doesn't answer why they just wont make a "sprint" race for one round only (or even let them start on opposite sides). the answer is probably: because of tradition and/or: it just would be another sport
For folks who are confused as to how this works. These types of cyclists are what's known as sprinters, sprinters can produce an insane amount of acceleration and high speed but only for a short period of time, kinda like 100 meter running sprinters. On bikes a LOT of what stops you going really super fast is wind resistance, caused by literally just going fast, if however you can get behind another cyclist you have far far less wind resistance, approximately 30% less, this is known as drafting. So basically they don't care about how fast they finish in, it doesn't matter, all that matters is who crosses the line first, because both riders can probably ride exactly the same speed as each other the person in front is actually at a disadvantage, because the person in second can put the same amount of power down but have considerably less resistance, this usually means if you can be deliberately second but only just behind first you can normally overtake and win in the last half a lap.
I know it may seem straightforward, but once you're on a bike with no brakes up steep banks going slow and playing mind games with your opponent you'll understand. We are talking seconds that feel like minutes.
Riding a fixed gear bicycle is a huge adjustment from riding a normal bicycle which you can coast and not always have to pedal. It takes some getting use to mentally but the more you ride one the easier it is to not think about it. And yeah the velodromes are all around the world and there are some in the United States. You just gotta find one close to you. And there’s rules on how the bicycle has to be set up, no breaks and your feet have to be clipped in
That was a thing of beauty! As a former match sprinter in the late 70's, the winner here has picture perfect form. I myself liked to sprint from the rear position, and I preferred to give a bit more room. That way, I could use the draft to slingshot past the opponent. But it is harder to win from the front, but better in some ways too. This sprinter is good. He should be proud. and his coaches too. Congratulations, new World Champion!
As far as I understand there are laps and the last lap is the most important so that's why they're playing around at the first laps and then punch the paddle to win
Ok, I think I understand this so far. So the reason for the slow movement in the beginning is for one to get behind the other so the guy that's behind can take advantage of the aerodynamics and get ahead at the end? And this is due to the short distance they must pedal? Am I getting this correctly?
As the top comment at the top of this video says, at 50-70 Km/h the windage eats 90-95% of cyclist's power, so being in front is actually a pretty big disadvantage and it lets the person behind them pedal against little wind as they're pedaling behind the person who's tanking all the wind. Which in turn lets the person behind go faster and in the end one up the person in first. Hope this makes sense.
@@jwust1n I know that. What i'm trying to say is when the first goes faster, the second guy won'be close enough to benefit from the tanking as there is too much gap at 4:13
Incredible duel! 71.44km/h !! I wish they could graphically simulate wind drag using translucent colors of different intensities along the two riders for the spectators to clearly understand what strategic game is going on. Or should I come up with one? 😁
Can someone explain the strategy in this to me? I'm assuming being in the slipstream makes a huge difference in these sprints? Also, why are the wheels designed like that?
You said it... Overcoming air resistance is the largest part of the effort, so an aerospoke in the front and a full wheel at the back are much more efficient aerodynamically than regular metal spoked wheels.

nameless5r That type of race does exist but it is called either a time trial or chariot race depending on which specific rules you include. In fact the qualifying for this race is a 200meter time trial (which then sorts out the riders based on speed into brackets). The point of this race is for the racers to use tactics as well as speed, which tends to make the racing a bit more dramatic (for some). "So he's stronger than you, find a way to beat him."
nameless5r No problem, there are plenty of time trials to choose from, which tend to be much more direct and rely much more on pure speed than tactics. Check out the "flying 200", "kilometer" and "Pursuit"

I'd like to know the 5 sec average power of these guys, maybe 2,500 watts.... and 1,500 watts for 30 secs. Pretty much the same wattage one would get out of an angry/hungry grizzly bear.

at top speed the person in front create a pocket of air the makes it easier for the rider behind. so riders perfer the be in the back until the very end. if you are in the front and cant make the person pass you in the beggining, you go slow until a certain distance from the finish and hope you can keep the lead long enough at top speed to overcome that pocket of air advantage the rider behind you has.
This is so fascinating! But Can somebody please explain track cycling to me in detail? Why are both riders trying to stay back, when they're at speeds at which slipstreaming won't matter?would it not work better for if you sprint out all 3 laps? I mean I've heard they don't do that in order to conserve energy, but doing that'll force your opponent to sprint it out too, right? Gah, so confusing
Yes, I get that, but both riders for the first two laps go so slow. At those speeds you are not facing any wind resistance, so logically speaking slipstreaming won't matter, right?
They are just racing a set distance, not sure but its probably like 500m or so. The rider in front is at a tactical disadvantage, so thats why they ride slow, because he's trying to get the other guy to pass him so he can draft.
If you went full out from the start, the other person would get on your wheel and draft you. He would be working a lot less harder than you because of the draft, so he would easily pass you at the end. Instead, they try to force the other person ahead so that they can get the draft.
1:41 Look at that! The second guy actually manages to balance his bike at a standstill because he doesn't want to pass the other guy and have to ride in front.

It's not a race against the clock - it's just who gets over the line first. You'll notice, if you watch the sport, that whoever goes in front first usually loses.
Lots are drawn to decide which rider starts the first heat from the inside position - he must take the lead initially. The other rider starts from the inside position in the second heat and lots are drawn again to decide the positions for the third heat, should one be necessary. The rider who initially takes the lead generally tries to ride as slowly as possible in an attempt to force his competitor to take the lead, so that he can launch his final sprint from his competitor's slipstream.

Lots are drawn to decide which rider starts the first heat from the inside position - he must take the lead initially. The other rider starts from the inside position in the second heat and lots are drawn again to decide the positions for the third heat, should one be necessary.
