The Spring Molt: A Virtual Field Trip

This Virtual Field Trip, during the Spring Molt, provides an introduction the Northern Elephant Seal Rookery at Piedras Blancas. The Spring molt brings over 10,000 adult female seals and juvenile male and female seals to Piedras Blancas, where they stay on the beach for a month to shed their old coat and grow a new coat once a year. Over 2000 students visit the rookery every year to learn about the elephant seals as part of our Schools program. The Friends of the Elephant Seal are hopeful that we will be able to host school groups back on the bluff as soon as it is safe to do so. Check out the other Virtual Field Trips on our channel.
