Level 3 refers to how many "actions" are required to defeat retention. For Safariland, action 1: push down on the sls with your thumb. Action 2: push forward on the sls with your thumb. Action 3: sweep the als to the rear with your thumb. If all you have to do is push in with your thumb on this holster, it is not level 3 by Safariland standards.
I have a few of these holsters and I agree. If it only takes a single button press for someone to get the gun out, it isn't a level 3. I cut the hoods off a couple of mine as it literally serves no purpose besides maybe psychological deterant. I've also cut the "lv2" to accept an optic (and to run an X300 and PL350). No complaints.
You are incorrect on what the levels mean. Level 1 is passive retention. So just the friction of the holster holding the firearm. A Level II holster contains an active retention mechanism in addition to the holster’s passive retention, providing two sources of retention A Level III retention holster has an extra retention mechanism compared to the level II holster. So the Blackhawk achieves 3 lvls by the following Lvl passive retention of the holster Lvl II pushing in the lever to release the hood Lvl III when you push in the button for the hood release that automatically pushes another button that releases the firearm from the holster. I hope this help in understanding lvl of retentions.
@@86keen Agree to disagree. You can have a level 1 holster if you have a very loose holster with ALS. With the blackhawk, even if the hood and "ALS" both independantly retain the firearn, if they can be defeated with the same button/action, then I don't consider it two different levels of security, unless its compensating for a safety failure.
Once I left full on duty issued leather, I moved on in life with the Serpa. I never had a problem with not putting my booger hook on the trigger during range day when drawing and firing were measured in seconds. The problem with the Serpa is in you had to get physical with someone and it ended on the ground, debris could enter the release mechanism and jam the weapon in the holster.
@@TiberiousGib The holster looks decent, except for the hood issue, and sticking out further than necessary. That being said, it would be an ideal for a battle belt for a woman. Like Blackhawk holsters that uses the light for retention which gives you many firearms options to use, but on the safariland holsters I take the hood off all of them
Ive been looking into the best level 3 option for my p320 spectre comp and one that grabs the light is looking like my best bet, thanks for the insight on this holster.
This holster looks amazing and looks like a really good reliable tool but the one thing I'm hesitant about is that the button for the hood also releases the firearm from the second level of retention as well which technically makes it just a level 2 holster and makes it easier for someone to defeat all the levels of retention because it's all released with just one button push it that something I should be concerned about or is there a way that retention has to work to rease both levels of retention that gives it more security and makes it more difficult to get the gun out?
I'm not crapping or hating on Blackhawk they make a really good quality product and I really like their holsters but I just feel that they should come up with an improvement on that and make something that's just as fast but has more security for the retention release system
@@camjohnson1575 Old comment I know but this mechanism doesn't release both retention mechanisms at the same time, a half push releases the bail but you have to go further to release the internal retention. Blackhawk almost got it right. 1 move vs 2 moves required by Safariland. It's like the Alien Gears Rapid Force L3, but the dust cover is in the way when reholstering on th3 Backhawk. Alien Gear does not have L3 holster for Staccato.
That is why this is actually a level 1 holster instead of a level two. There is no reason to have a hood and ALS if they are using the same button to release. The only benifit is that you have a hood in case the ALS fails lol.

It put it up against the Safariland and Blackhawk any day.
As an Officer how often are we holstering and reholstering fast enough for it to annoy you? If it’s out its OUT, and when the work is done you reholster. Who cares if you gotta slap the dust cover out of the way. The only time that would be an issue is on the range while running the POST qualification course. If you gotta get the gun out in a real situation I’m sure the reholster is a few minutes down the chain, and also unless you work in a rough area most of us go months without actually having to deploy your weapon on duty.
As an armored car driver, I drew my weapon several times a day 5 days a week! You’re not allowed to open a garage door to drive out until guns are drawn and weapon is not to be holstered until door is fully down! I drew my weapon on the street more times each week than most sworn officers draw in their entire career. Any ideas on if this can latch onto either a staccato with a PL350 or a SP-01 with a X300? (Or better yet, a SP-01 phantom with a PL-350)? I've modded my TLR1 to run a PL350, but the longer light body of the X300 would give me more coverage for both a longer gun and a longer light.
I’m Not sure, I don’t have an SP-01 to try. I would guess yes on the so-01 with the x300
Any videos of that TLR1/PL350 Mod?
@@unknown-cf9rd nope. Just a little bit of dremel work for one version and an overtravel stop added on another one. Used a glock 17 and P320 holster.
Will this fit my glock 43x
Nope
Blackhawk almost got it right. 1 move vs 2 moves required by Safariland. It's like the Alien Gears Rapid Force L3, but the dust cover is in the way when reholstering on th3 Backhawk. Alien Gear does not have L3 holster for Staccato.
Yup
That is why this is actually a level 1 holster instead of a level two. There is no reason to have a hood and ALS if they are using the same button to release. The only benifit is that you have a hood in case the ALS fails lol.
Alien gear lvl 3 duty holster is also a really great option
I’ve heard good things
@@TiberiousGib if it’s any consolation I switched from safari land to alien gear and I regret nothing 😁 God bless partner and take care
I ran the Safariland with both the M&P as well as the Glock Gen 4 17 for over 13.5 years. Went to a new department that issued the Rapid Force from Alien Gear. Was reluctant at first but now I wouldn’t switch to anything else. l’ve never been so fast on my draw from a level 3 then I have been with the Rapid Force. It put it up against the Safariland and Blackhawk any day.
When I get older, I wanna tattoo my right arm grow a beard so I can be a firearms reviewer on TH-cam lol
Solid life goals 🤣
As an Officer how often are we holstering and reholstering fast enough for it to annoy you? If it’s out its OUT, and when the work is done you reholster. Who cares if you gotta slap the dust cover out of the way. The only time that would be an issue is on the range while running the POST qualification course. If you gotta get the gun out in a real situation I’m sure the reholster is a few minutes down the chain, and also unless you work in a rough area most of us go months without actually having to deploy your weapon on duty.
What if you need to re-holster to go hands on, maybe put cuffs on?
Seems like this video really isn’t for you officer it’s for the rest of us normal folk.
I think flipping it out of the way would get annoying.
As an armored car driver, I drew my weapon several times a day 5 days a week! You’re not allowed to open a garage door to drive out until guns are drawn and weapon is not to be holstered until door is fully down! I drew my weapon on the street more times each week than most sworn officers draw in their entire career. My custom built .45 super barely fit through my holster due to the massive muzzle brake but was just perfect enough to not complain or be ‘annoyed’. When protecting pretty bank tellers yes this man worries about smoothness. We usually call cops after we shoot
@@TiberiousGibif your gun is out there will likely be other units on scene. If that’s the case, you cover the offender, and someone else will cuff. Regardless, you’ll have back up on scene, but if not I wouldn’t introduce a firearm in a fight where the bad guy can close distance fast enough, and I don’t intend to use it.
Other con. If you pull then press, it will get stuck.
Does the Safariland?
This is really a level 2.
I wouldn’t argue
lol not a better holster? If that dust cover is an issue let me introduce you to the alien gear rapid force duty holster lol.
Alien gear duty holster wasn’t out when I made this review
@@TiberiousGib oh my bad lol I did not realize.
Does it work with a P320? 😂
I believe they make a similar version that works with the P320
You missed the press release from SIG I guess
That "issue" with the Serpa Holster is nonsense. I just went through a police academy with it and was never even close to a negligent discharge. Maybe people should practice with it before they condemn it.
Just because you didn’t have an issues doesn’t mean it’s a shitty design or that they had tons of ND’s. I do agree with the training part of your comment, it’s 100% lack of training with a crappy design.
FLETC forbids it along with most training classes and most US law enforcement agencies for a reason.
@@TPSJ-141 That reason seems to be incompetence on the part of users that then blame the design. Thousands of draws later, still no issues for me, not even close calls.
@@m.redleg252 sure, it works, until it doesn’t. If there’s even a 1% chance of something happening, I don’t take that chance. You can defend it all you like, there’s a reason it’s “done away with” for the most part in service
Better option, Aliengear.
I just got one, need to review it soon
@@TiberiousGib You will see. Cant wait for your reviews. Thanks.
I ran a serpa for 12 years, NEVER an ND, Nobody on any team that I served with had an issue either, Only a complete idiot would cause that issue.
Just because you didn’t have that issue doesn’t mean other haven’t had that issue, just Google it. Unfortunately not every citizen and police officer takes training as serious as they should

Um ….that a good thing?
This is a level 2 holster not a level 3. Way to easily defeated
If you are on duty, go with a level 3, if not…. I do t think it really
Matters
💩
The holster? The review? My sexy accent?
You must be on Blackhawks payroll🤣🤣. I don't like their products at all.
I am on no one’s payroll, what don’t you like?
What a stupid rationalization, probably the most idiotic one of the year ive seen so far... just bcus you (a singular, insignificant person) dont like a brand, that doesnt mean somebody that does is being paid to advertise them.. i know for a fact that the gear you like is absolute garbage to someone else, but if it works for you then use it.
Horrible holster
Why is that, gotta be more specific
@@TiberiousGib was my original holster for my P. Felt stiff for draws and re holster. Just no comparison between it and safariland. I wanted to like it .. just was not a good holster in my opinion 😔
It doesn’t work with an SRO red dot
That stinks
Good review. 🫱🏾🫲🏼
Thanks buddy 🙌
