    im only halfway through but this is definitely the video I needed! Im currently an assistant teacher, so what you said about loving children, but not wanting to be in the classroom setting really spoke to me. I have a class of 30 kids that im with from 7am-4pm & it feels like a lot. This videos helping me to think deeper about speech pathology.

    The beginning of your video described what I was going through! I loved English and convinced myself to be a teacher because I thought that was all I could do. This was an eye opener. Thanks for posting this!

    Hi! Thank you so much for your video, I feel like I've gained much needed clarity 😭 I'm a junior in high school and I'm currently deciding on special education teaching/slp for uni. Defintely related to a lot of what you said, and now I think I see myself leaning towards slp slightly more. I've always loved English and became interested in science too but up until recently I couldn't find a major that combined both, I love working with kids and educating them, and now after you mentioned a lot of these points I believe my personality may fit slp a little more than teaching. Thank you so much 🙌

    Hi thanks for this video! I am considering pursuing speech pathology but I’m just not 100% sure if it is the right career for me haha, I’m really indecisive 😩 and it’s especially hard to decide without getting the chance to shadow anyone (no SLP in my area allows shadowing because of covid-19)
    In your opinion, what is the most important personality trait an SLP should have? And was there any times where you thought being an SLP wasn’t for you? What is your least favourite part of the job?

    • @emilyyelizabethdavio
      @emilyyelizabethdavio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Totally understandable! Covid has made things pretty hard to observe. I think the most important personality trait to have is flexibility. Sessions change and even within the session you have to be willing to adapt to whatever comes your way like if the client isn’t understanding the lesson or is having a bad day or there’s a fire drill and you have to miss a student. Or the opposite and the client is doing well you have to adapt to make it harder for them. (Here’s a week in my SLP life if you want to check it out instead of observing th-cam.com/video/2W4eAycyxnk/w-d-xo.html ) Also I have definitely had days where I wanted to give up and I doubted my ability to be successful in this profession. BUT then I take a step back and look at all the clients I have helped so far and take it one day at a time because sometimes it’s daunting looking at everything you have to learn. So I’ve learned to take it one assignment and one client at a time because even just being in grad school I’ve made a huge difference in my client’s ability to communicate. My least favorite part as many would say is the documentation (report writing, progress report writing if in a school) but it’s honestly not hard and I try to get it done right away so I can move onto the next thing. Other than that I love how we treat such a diverse population and every time I tell someone I’m studying to become a SLP, they mention they know someone who needed one or they themselves had one as a child and are forever thankful for them.

    hii! really glad i found your channel, i've been searching for SLP youtubers to fuel me. Do you know anyone from your batch pursuing SLP that did their undergrad in other fields besides Communication Science & Disorders? Im currently completing my bachelors in Special Education but im really set on doing my masters in SLP.

      @emilyyelizabethdavio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi thanks for joining me!! Everyone from my undergrad did their bachelors in CSD. I think it’s easier to have the background in it BUT you can definitely still do it and I say go for it! You just have to take prerequisite courses and then apply to a masters program. I also think it is great to have a background in special education. That knowledge will be so beneficial! 🥰

      Angela, I did my undergrad in psychology thinking I wanted to do school counseling. After learning about SLP, my undergrad degree didn't not meet the pre reqs for grad school. So I did an online post-bac program through CSU San Marcos. I am now in my last semester of grad school for SLP! You can do it!

    Hii, I’m so glad I found you. I’m a sophomore studying education with a concentration in Spanish. (To teach Spanish to adolescents) but I can’t help the feeling of wanting to be an SLP, since I had a speech delay and needed one. I love the one to one communication but I get burned out quickly. Do you feel that way? Teaching would be less stress because it’s more giving the students the tools to learn. Is grad school a lot of money? And do you think I can be a teacher and then apply to a grad school? Or should I transfer as a junior? I feel like I’m too late. Thank you for the resources.

    • @emilyyelizabethdavio
      @emilyyelizabethdavio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I had several friends who switched to SLP as a sophomore in undergrad so it’s definitely not too late but just might have to take an extra class or two. You can also be a bilingual SLP (Spanish &english). I feel like there’s days you can feel burnt out no matter what you’re doing but each student/client I work with is so different that it’s fun. I personally think teaching is more stress because you have 20ish kids to manage. Grad school all depends on where you go honestly. I went to a state school because there’s standard material they have to teach you. Whether you pay $40,000 or $100,000 is up to you but where you get your diploma doesn’t matter in the end. As far as teaching first you could do that and apply to grad school absolutely but you would just have to take the prerequisite courses before applying. Feel free to DM me on insta with more questions @emilyydavio or check out my grad school playlist! Then you can decide further, good luck! 😊

    I love your video! I am about to transfer to get my communication disorder bachelors . I am nervous feeling like I may not be smart enough , even though I’ve always gotten good grades but I feel like I need to work on memorization more than others . How difficult was the coursework and clinical studies for you?? Your feedback is much appreciated . Thanks so much

      @emilyyelizabethdavio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks girl! Don’t doubt yourself though! It’s not about being smart it’s just about doing your best, studying the best way that works for you and taking each step one at a time. The coursework is difficult but you have your classmates and professors to lean on and like I said you take it one assignment, one class and one year at a time. Then before you know it you’ll have graduated! 😊 feel free to DM me or ask more questions here! @emilyydavio

    hey! i've been accepted to a masters program which is great. i've always been interested in english and am very creative but also like structure - do you find it is a creative profession? sometimes i worry that working in a medical setting (with respirators, feeding tubes, people with serious illness etc) could perhaps be daunting and depressing over-time? i know it's not the only setting a SLP can work in - however could you share your thoughts on it would be amazing!

    Hi I went to shadow in a private pediatric practice and the owner kind of scared me because she told me that Slp is not sunshines and rainbows, she told me that i would have to be able to deal with kids with behavior issues that will hit you, spit on you etc. Can you give some insight? Thanks

    • @emilyyelizabethdavio
      @emilyyelizabethdavio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi! Really good question! I agree there is a behavior management component to the job because we work with a variety of disorders. HOWEVER, this is mainly based on what setting you work in and the population you work with. I wouldn’t let that component deter you! You get a lot of support in this field and will learn what works best with each student. For example some of my students who demonstrate difficult behaviors benefit from a token system and that works for them. I personally have never been hit and typically those students have a paraprofessional with them to help or a parent that sits in. DM me for more specific info and I’d love to share more! 😊 @emilyydavio

    I love your video. Do you think speech pathology is a medical job or more just like teaching?

    • @emilyyelizabethdavio
      @emilyyelizabethdavio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's actually both! You learn in detail how the brain processes speech and how your body coordinates several muscles to produce it. SLPs also provide swallowing intervention which is medical as well. The medical aspect is kind of the background piece you have to be familiar with to then know how and what to 'teach' in terms of intervention and how the client can best progress.
